If you’re looking for places to visit that won’t deplete your bank account, then look no further. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Cheapest Holiday Destinations. For this list, we’re looking at vacation options that are modestly-priced but still respectable. They have to have good reasons for visiting them other than their affordability. #10: Bolivia In early 2017, Lonely Planet reported the cost for a day in Bolivia at less than $26 – including accommodations for less than $8 a night. With prices like that, it’s obvious why this country earned a spot on the list. However, you shouldn’t visit solely for the low cost. Bolivia is home to some of the most breathtaking views on the planet. From the otherworldly salt flats in Uyuni to the teetering Yungas Road that straddles the sides of some of the country’s most beautiful mountains, Bolivia is overflowing with picturesque locations. If you’re more of a city dweller, then check out La Paz, Bolivia’s cultural capital. Either way, you’re sure to enjoy yourself while keeping costs low! #9: Mexico A vibrant country known for its incredible food, rich culture and beautiful beaches, Mexico is also one of the cheapest places in the world to travel. With a 2017 average daily cost of $42, it isn’t hard to see all this country has to offer on a shoestring budget. Food, drinks and accommodation all come at a discount price. This will free up room in your bank account for day trips to some of the country’s most beautiful spots. From visiting the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza to exploring the streets of Mexico City, your dollar will stretch from one end of the country to the other. #8: Prague, Czech Republic The only city to make the list, Prague is a must-see for any self-respecting traveller. In early 2017, a bottle of wine would only knock you back $6 and tickets to the opera were less than $4. So you can see why this city has become a tourist magnet. Sure, accommodations were running in the $40-$50 range per night, but food, drinks, entertainment and transportation are all quite low. This is especially handy in Prague due to the incredible amount of things to do and see. From Old Town to the Charles Bridge and everything in between, Prague has become one of the hottest, and cheapest, capitals in Europe to visit. #7: Cuba The warming in the relationship between the United States and Cuba is sure to lead to higher prices, but the Cuba of 2017 still is a bargain for travelers wanting to get significant bang for their buck. Whether you’re staying at an all-inclusive resort or a hostel in downtown Havana, Cuba is an incredibly cheap place to visit. At 2017 exchange rates, a person can grab a Mojito for $4 and a bite to eat for $7.50 and head out to one of the many salsa clubs throughout the country. If hitting the beach is your thing, then make your way to Varadero and relax in the sun. There is something for everyone on this beautiful island! #6: India One of the largest and most populated countries in the world, India is home to some of the most beautiful natural and man-made sites you will ever see. Thankfully, travelling there is incredibly cheap. With accommodations in early 2017 for as low as $5 per night and tasty street foods running you $2-$3 a plate, visiting India on a budget has never been easier. Transportation is also very cheap, regardless of whether you’re going cross-town or cross-country. With an abundance of hostels and restaurants dotting big and small cities alike, this country is a budget traveller’s paradise. #5: Greece This country has seen its fair share of economic problems in the early 21st century; that’s not good for its citizens but works to the tourist’s advantage. Hopefully you’re the latter. Before you go booking a flight to hotspots like Santorini and Mykonos, keep in mind that those islands can be quite pricey. However, if you check out some of the smaller, lesser-known islands, you can get the same amount for half the cost. Greece is the perfect place for party animals and beach bums alike. With an average daily cost for budget travellers in the $40-$50 range in 2017, you won’t need much to get by. Sun-soaked islands and a rich cultural history at a low cost…what are you waiting for? #4: Bulgaria When most people picture Bulgaria, they see a cold, Eastern European country sitting in the shadow of its bigger neighbors. In reality, Bulgaria is home to some of the finest and most affordable beaches Europe has to offer and an array of picturesque views. It also boasts a vibrant capital city in Sofia – which was named the cheapest European capital to visit in 2017. Travellers are sure to fall in love with the plethora of culture this country has to offer; and for $45 a day, why not? If bustling cities aren’t your thing, then make your way to the Black Sea. It’s a cheaper beach getaway than Spain or France, but just as relaxing. #3: Cambodia One of many southeast Asian countries that is cheap for travellers but overflowing with natural and man-made sites just dying to be explored, Cambodia is that rare place that allows you to live like a king for practically nothing. Whether you’re staying in a five-star hotel or a one-star hostel, prepare to spend very little. While Cambodia is only a couple of decades removed from a troubled history, it has made tremendous strides in a short period of time. From the incredible architecture that dots the skyline of the capital city of Phnom Penh to the breathtaking temples of Angkor Wat, Cambodia is a must-see! And with 2017’s average daily cost of $30, what’s stopping you? #2: Vietnam Whether you’re wandering the streets of the capital city of Hanoi or admiring the natural beauty that surrounds Ha Long Bay, there is no shortage of things to do and see in Vietnam. To say this country has a checkered past would be a gross understatement. However, in the years since the Vietnam War this southeast Asian country has become a popular tourist destination for people on a budget. In 2017, travellers to Vietnam could get by for as little as $20 a day. That includes room and board, some fantastic street food and even a couple of beers! With an endless supply of temples, beaches and pagodas to explore, this is one country you don’t want to miss! Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions: Dominican Republic South Africa #1: Thailand In the pantheon of cheap holiday destinations, Thailand reigns supreme. With beautiful white sand beaches, a rich cultural history and a staggeringly low cost of living, this southeast Asian country is a must-see for any self-respecting backpacker. Cheap food, cheap drinks and cheap hostels enable visitors to keep their daily spending somewhere in the $25-$40 range in 2017. All that extra money in your pocket enables you to rent a car or motorbike and explore Thailand’s beautiful countryside. The best part about this seaside nation is the balance it strikes between serene island getaways and bustling city nightlife. Whether scuba diving on the idyllic island of Ko Tao or thriving in the heart of Bangkok, there’s something for every taste.
