#10: Duke “G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra” (2009)

Channing Tatum got a big break in this 2009 blockbuster by playing Duke, one of the lead soldiers of the titular military unit. He and Ripcord join the G.I. Joe team to take on an evil organization after being attacked. Duke could have been a typical military character. However, even with veteran actors such as Dennis Quaid in the film, Tatum manages to make Duke stand out with his commanding presence and great physical appearance. It's too bad his role in the sequel was cut short...

#9: Jason Lyle

Top 20 Badass Jason Statham Moments

“Coach Carter” (2005) In this biographical sports drama, Coach Carter benches a well-known high school basketball team because they break a promise and perform poorly in school. Tatum plays Jason Lyle, one of the basketball players on the team. Even though he has a smaller role in this movie, Tatum convincingly portrays a character that learns the importance of academics and works hard to play on the team again. The academic and personal determination that he develops motivates us all.

#8: John Cale “White House Down” (2013)

Also in:

Top 10 John Hurt Performances

Tatum landed another blockbuster with “White House Down.” After a group of very dangerous invaders breaks into the White House, John Cale must work to save his daughter Emily who is there on a tour. If that wasn’t enough, he also has to protect President Sawyer, played by Jamie Foxx. Tatum didn’t only perform the action sequences with ease, but also effectively portrayed the fear that Cale faced and the great bravery he had to show. As a result, we were able to experience his courageous acts and watch the entire movie on the edge of our seats.

#7: Martin Taylor “Side Effects” (2013)

Also in:

Top 10 Martin Scorsese Character Performances

A far cry from the hero roles that he’s previously played, in this psychological thriller, Tatum plays a man who is imprisoned for illegally obtaining information in stocks. After he is released from prison, Tatum seeks to reunite with his wife, Emily. However, Emily, played by Rooney Mara, has changed completely because of prescribed medications. Tatum’s performance – albeit brief - allowed us to see the changes that an ex-con might face after leaving prison and let us experience a husband’s reactions to a dramatically changed wife in the aftermath of such events.

#6: SGT Steve Shriver “Stop-Loss” (2008)

Also in:

Top 10 Steve Carell Performances

In this drama, solider Brandon King, played by Ryan Phillippe, has finally started adjusting to being at home, but is soon called back to duty and has to return to Iraq – hence the movie’s title. Tatum plays Sgt. Shriver, a longtime friend of protagonist and fellow soldier Brandon. Injured during the war, Shriver develops post-traumatic stress disorder, which allows Tatum to give a moving portrayal of the disorder’s horrifying reality. His character also helps bring to life many of the hardships and issues that soldiers – injured or not – have to face among their fellow men and with those around them.

#5: Leo Collins “The Vow” (2012)

Also in:

Channing Tatum Biography (UPDATE)

In this romantic drama, Tatum plays Leo Collins, one half of a married couple that gets into a serious car accident with his wife. Rachel McAdams is said wife, Paige Collins. She’s the most affected by the crash and ends up losing her memories of the past couple of years, including anything and everything about Leo. She is thus convinced by her parents to live with them, but Tatum’s not giving up that easily; desiring to restart their lives together, he tries to persuade the love of his life to return to him. Tatum’s poignant performance truly shows us the emotions of a man who is struggling to win his wife back and the things one will do for love.

#4: Tyler Gage “Step Up” (2006)

In this dance movie, Tatum plays Tyler Gage, a man who vandalizes a performing arts school, but is not punished – at least not really, when you consider the outcome. While doing his community service, he gets the opportunity to dance with up-and-coming dancer Nora and a chance to attend dance school. Tatum doesn’t only successfully depict his character’s story arc as he changes from a bad boy to someone who accepts his talents and falls in love, but he also helped “Step Up” become a franchise, with mutiple sequels. His killer dance moves were the icing on the cake.

#3: Michael ‘Magic Mike’ Lane “Magic Mike” (2012)

Also in:

Top 10 Michael B. Jordan Performances

When director Steven Soderbergh agreed to make a movie about the life of a stripper, he knew that he wanted Tatum in the lead role because of the actor’s previous stripping experience. However, Tatum did not only strip and show off his hot bod for the movie; he also used his acting skills by convincingly depicting the harsh reality of rejection when his love interest, Brooke, does not approve of his line of work. Tatum’s performance showcased the human side of strippers that is rarely seen in the media, helping to make the film a box office hit and a positively received comedy-drama.

#2: Mark Schultz “Foxcatcher” (2014)

Also in:

Top 10 Best Mark Wahlberg Performances

Even though he’s usually known for blockbusters and comedies, Tatum is thoroughly convincing in this devastating drama. Mark Schultz is a wrestler who teams up with coach John E. du Pont, played by Steve Carrell, in order to gain as much fame as his brother. However, du Pont eventually reveals his deeply disturbing mental state by manipulating Mark. Tatum’s portrayal of the drastic and upsetting changes in his character is unforgettable, and thanks to his emotionally charged performance, “Foxcatcher” is one of the most painful but moving dramatic movies in recent memory. Before we release our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions: Young Antonio “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints” (2006) Duke Orsino “She’s the Man” (2006) Joaquín Mondragon “The Book of Life” (2014) John Tyree “Dear John” (2010)

#1: Greg Jenko “21 Jump Street” (2012)

Also in:

Interview with X-Wing Pilot Greg Grunberg - MojoConnects

In this hilarious adaptation of the late ‘80s TV show, Tatum plays Jenko, a cop who pretends to be a high school student in order to stop a drug ring. Even though he is known for his physical abilities, Tatum ends up in advanced courses and discovers a new side of himself. Tatum not only brings the laughs, but serves justice as he works to clean up the high school – all while playing off his polar opposite co-star Jonah Hill. And not to mention the action. There’s a lot of action in this film – and Tatum knows just how to play it. Tatum also brings the action and humor to the 2014 sequel, where Jenko and Schmidt head to college, as they will undoubtedly do for the 3rd planned film. Do you agree with our list?
