Top 10 Celebrities Who Have Been Homeless

Ladies and gentleman, these celebs are the innovators and perpetuators of “Homeless Chic.” Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the top 10 celebrities who dress like homeless people. For this list, we’re focusing on wealthy celebrities that take the concept of “real” and “street” to a whole new level. In other words, we’re looking at those famous people who don’t put much effort into their everyday appearances and whose regular style can be considered unkempt, dirty or other adjectives along those lines. For the record, we’re not saying we think they are homeless, but we understand whypeople think they dress like they are.

#10: Nick Nolte

Despite a stellar acting career dating back to the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, Nick Nolte has become known in recent years not for stealing scenes, but for his possible dumpster diving. Sure, you may not realize that Nick Nolte once lit up the screen with Eddie Murphy. But you’ve most definitely experienced the imagery of drunk, Hawaiian shirt Nolte, which preceded the all-out madness of grey beard Nolte, who is sort of a wannabe Bukowski-type character tinged with a bit of Santa Claus hipster.

#9: Kanye West

This man is such a damn fashion guru that he doesn’t give two shifts at Wendy's about your ideas of how a homeless person is supposed to look. He did, however, seem to embrace the concept of “Homeless Chic” for Yeezy Season 2. In fact, Yeezy once asserted that “sweatshirts are f**king important”- words that doubtlessly echoed through fashion houses everywhere. Kanye’s style is something along the lines of urban knife attack-slash-just woke up, and we gotta give it to him: it’s certainly an inventive way to demonstrate your devotion to keeping it real.

#8: Russell Brand

Here’s a guy that gives endless hope to those who crave some type of revolution. Part of Russell Brand’s appeal has to be his unique fashion game, which reeks of a modern day hipster trying to play cute and mildly insane grandpa on the street. Other days, Brand adopts the classic homeless/hungover Jesus look, while sometimes appearing as if he just left an alleyway slumber party from hell. But hey, he makes it work!

#7: Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen

Truly the hipster princesses of homeless chic, these former “Full House” and direct to video starlets have innovated the hermit-gone-for-a-walk look that’s become all the rage for wealthy young entrepreneurs. It typically helps to have a dog nearby, as the little furball naturally strengthens this bizarre form of “street style. At the end of the day, however, Mary Kate and Ashley probably don’t give a flock of donkeys what you think about their finger-on-the-pulse style – also known as bohemian-bourgeois, by the way.

Jared Leto

When you’re a successful actor AND a successful musician, a certain sense of heightened pretension will surely take over. Many of the afflicted turn to the Jesus beard and homeless-style threads, simply in order to deal with this crazy world of ours. Let’s call it the Jim Morrison effect - a strange transformation from charming sex symbol to sort of a last man on earth vibe. Jared Leto's not homeless, but he does seem to go out of his way to downplay his bank account (and his good looks) with his wardrobe choices.

#5: Johnny Depp

Likely an inspiration for Jared Leto, Johnny Depp also covers up his boyish charm with somewhat of a Parisian artist, back alley getup. It's possible that Depp believes himself to be an actual French poet, perhaps a modern day Arthur Rimbaud that places more importance on the need for a good scarf than your opinion of his overall thrift store game. But let’s be honest: Johnny Depp probably doesn’t shop at your typical indie outlet. Even so, just plop some type of hipster headgear on this man, and he’ll surely smile.

#4: Keanu Reeves

While Johnny Depp and Jared Leto rock that homeless man appearance, our man Keanu exudes more of a “what just happened” homelessman style. This often makes him look like he’s trying to figure out where he is and how he got there. Perhaps this was the flashpoint that led to Reeves re-examining his life, and his wardrobe. Perhaps it's why he's seemingly committed himself to a life of modest, dumpster-esque clothing complemented by some type of expensive accessory. Oh, and have you seen those boots?! Sometimes it seems like he never leaves home without them…

#3: Courtney Love

To her credit, a rock star experience can require a life-long commitment to the grunge look. Given the raw intensity of Courtney Love’s tattered clothing game over the years, one may be inclined to believe that she’s actually looking for a temporary home and just maybe living out of a suitcase from the early ‘90s. That’s how it appears anyway. While she’s certainly an icon of rock, it wouldn’t hurt Ms. Love to lean more towards the elegantly wasted homeless look rather than the blackout wasted kind of style.

#2: Helena Bonham Carter

She’s the Queen of the International Artisan Homeless Vibe and a legitimately brilliant British actress that tends to exude less of a royal facade and more that of the disheveled stepsister whose scenes were cut from the film. Just imagine a Keira Knightley movie and then imagine her older, edgier, long lost sister. That’s the Helena Bonham Carter look. Oh, and she was in a long-term relationship Tim Burton, a creative individual who is also dedicated to expressing himself through hand-me-down clothes via the nearest Salvation Army store - or so it would often seem, anyway. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. Mac DeMarco Rob Zombie Macaulay Culkin Keith Richards

#1: Shia LaBeouf

To be a modern celebrity means a lot of things, but most importantly, it means that the camera’s always on. Nobody seems to understand this better than Mr. Shia LaBeouf. Undeniably talented, Shia wants us to know that he’s talented, and while he may not exactly realize what he’s got going on from day to day, he damn well knows how to dress it up lo-fi. First of all, the guy can grow an impressive beard, and secondly, he knows how to perform for his audience. It may have taken some time for Shia to settle into his unique homeless vibe, but we’re proud of his commitment and homeless man machismo (for the most part, at least). Do you agree with our list? Which celebrity do you think dresses like a perpetual bum? For more raw and gritty Top 10s published daily, be sure to subscribe to WatchMojo.com.
