VOICE OVER: Emily - WatchMojo WRITTEN BY: Anna Dang
Some animated characters just wear the same old thing everyday, but these are cartoon characters who are totally fashion goals. For this list, we'll be looking at cartoons only, not anime. Our countdown includes “Steven Universe,” “Star vs. the Forces of Evil,” “Adventure Time,” and more!
Turns out you don’t need to be three-dimensional to be a fashion icon. Welcome to MsMojo, and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Cartoon Characters Who Are Totally Fashion Goals. For this list, we’ll be looking at cartoons only, not anime. So, despite how stylish they are, we’ll be excluding anime characters like Sailor Moon.

#10: Connie Maheswaran “Steven Universe” (2013-19)

Top 10 Times Connie was the Best Big Mouth Character

Throughout this great show, we get to see this bookworm turn into a badass swordswoman – and start making bolder fashion choices in the process. While Connie looked cute in her original white and mint-green dress and peach boots, it was a nice change of pace to see her in new, more mature outfits. When she starts training with Pearl, we get to see one of her very best looks: barefoot in a dark purple combat suit, with gauze bandages on her arms, and her hair in a long braid. Not only does the outfit look awesome, it also expresses her true personality as a competent fighter who’s determined to protect her friends.

#9: The Winx “Winx Club” (2004-)

Top 10 Differences Between Fate: The Winx Saga & Winx Club

Good fashion taste isn’t a prerequisite to get into the Winx Club; but from looking at its members, you’d definitely think it was. While the Winx girls always look flawless, there’s no denying that they’re at their most dazzling when in Winx fairy form. We’re not sure which look we like best, between Bloom’s teal skirt, Stella’s orange gypsy top, or Flora’s adorable pink dress and fingerless gloves. We’ve also got our eye on Musa’s wedge boots and Tecna’s cool bodysuit. Even though they joined the club later, Aisha and Roxy have proven multiple times that they’re just as capable of serving looks. After all, how can you not look awesome in a sparkly crop top and fairy wings?

#8: Ms. Frizzle “The Magic School Bus” (1994-97)

The Magic School Bus Rides Again (2017) - Top 5 Facts!

Who said having frizzy hair was a problem? This fearless science teacher actually uses static electricity to make sure her hair stays wild: the result is the mother of all messy buns, which goes perfectly well with her equally wacky outfits. Ms. Frizzle’s outfits never fail to blow our minds; plus, they helpfully foreshadow the subject of her lesson of the day. The Frizz has eccentric taste, but she’s also a highly practical woman - as evidenced by iconic pieces like her fully functional lighthouse outfit, or her pharmacy kit dress. She also has her accessory game on point: seriously, we want those magical glowing earrings. This gal’s quirky style is just one of the many things that make her an inspiration to teachers everywhere.

#7: Mabel Pines “Gravity Falls” (2012-16)

Mabel may be a twin, but everything about her makes her one of a kind - and her fashion sense is no exception. While she may be most recognizable in her fuschia sweater with the shooting star pattern, Mabel Pines has more than one look up her sleeve. And whether she’s killing it at karaoke night or busy running the Mystery Shack for the day, each of her outfits is more eye-catching than the last. Mabel’s fashion sense is a perfect example of her being unapologetically herself -- especially if that means wearing a light-up sweater. Not everyone could pull off such an eccentric style, but it fits Mabel’s sunny personality to a tee. Shine bright like a diamond, girl!

#6: Star Butterfly “Star vs. the Forces of Evil” (2015-19)

Top 10 Animated Star Wars Characters

No one can rock a sea green dress and striped leggings like this interdimensional princess. While Star Butterfly has worn several outfits throughout the show, she seems to have a predilection for poofy skirts and pastel colours. The combination reflects her girly, happy-go-lucky nature… but that cute devil-horned headband reminds you that Star is not to be messed with. She knows how to upgrade any outfit with a few quirky touches that are uniquely her own: we love her animal-themed boots, yellow star purse, and spider necklace. Even her battle armor looks simultaneously intimidating and adorable, thanks to some little pink hearts. And we want to thank the creators of the show for giving us punk Star: we’ll never forget that glorious purple undercut.

#5: Marceline the Vampire Queen “Adventure Time” (2010-18)

Marceline dresses like that one girl who never grew out of her emo phase; but when you’re a thousand-year old vampire, you can get away with it. Though she usually dresses in dark tones to match her jet black hair and gray skin, she’s been known to add a pop of colour to her wardrobe - whether it’s a red top paired with high-waisted blue jeans and a sun hat, or a pink dress with lavender tights for a more girly look. We’re pretty sure this vampire queen could rock any outfit - including of course her usual gray tank top, skinny jeans and burgundy boots. That battle axe/bass guitar adds just the perfect amount of badassery to pull the whole look together.

#4: Ginger, Courtney & Carl “As Told by Ginger” (2000-16)

Cartoon characters often get criticized for wearing the same outfit all the time. After all, isn’t variety one of the rules of fashion? Well, in this Nickelodeon show, the characters actually wear different clothes in each episode. Maybe it’s because Ginger Foutley knows that you don’t become the most popular girl in Lucky Junior High by wearing the same outfit every day. Though she usually goes for a casual t-shirt and jeans, Ginger occasionally wears skirts and dresses in bright colours that compliment her flaming red hair. Meanwhile, we know that her friend and fashion diva Courtney wouldn’t be caught dead wearing the same outfit two days in a row - she’s waaay too trendy for that. In fact, even Ginger’s weird brother Carl knows to ditch his brown spider sweatshirt for a different look every once in a while.

#3: Kim Possible “Kim Possible” (2002-07)

Top 10 Cartoon Characters We Had a Crush On

In her black turtleneck crop top and army green cargo pants, Kim simply oozes confidence. The spunky redhead seems to have a thing for crop tops and baggy pants in general, as shown by her civilian clothes - and we support that one hundred percent. Not only does she save the world multiple times while going to high school, she serves killer looks in her everyday life and during her missions. To be fair, she isn’t the only one with a sense of style: her arch nemesis Shego can pretty much rock any black and green outfit. The two girls may not see eye to eye on most things, but you can’t deny that they at least share a flair for fashion.

#2: Alex, Sam, & Clover “Totally Spies!” (2001-13)

Also in:

Top 10 SAVAGE Alex Trebek Moments

These three teenage spies always look dressed to the nines - which is impressive, considering their busy schedule. Clover may be the self-proclaimed fashionista of the group, but we think it’s safe to say they all have their fashion game on point. And while most of their outfits could be described as “preppy chic,” part of their charm comes from the subtle differences between them: girly girl Clover rocks the trendiest outfits with her blonde coif and Yves Mont Blanc heels; Sam channels some bohemian hippie vibes with long skirts and flowery accessories; and Alex nails the sporty tomboy aesthetic with her short bob and high-top sneakers. Just like their personalities, their different styles complement each other perfectly. Totally Spies? More like “totally fashion goals.” Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. Jem “Jem and the Holograms” (1985-88) Debbie Thornberry “The Wild Thornberrys” (1998-2004) Ms. Sara Bellum “The Powerpuff Girls” (1998-2005) Luz Noceda “The Owl House” (2020-) Judy Funnie “Doug” (1991-94; 1996-99)

#1: Daria Morgendorffer “Daria” (1997-2002)

Given Daria’s indifference towards her looks, we’re not sure how she would feel about earning the top spot on our list. We know the Lawndale High Fashion Club would NOT approve. With her green jacket, black skirt and combat boots, Daria dresses like she’s cooler than you – which she probably is. Her clothes may not be eye-catching, but they’re a perfect reflection of her cynical nonchalance - a trait she shares with her friend and fellow fashion icon, Jane Lane. (xref) Plus, she was rocking the no-makeup look and hipster glasses before they were cool. Whether she likes it or not, Daria is a living testimony to two of the most essential fashion rules: 1) less is more, and 2) it’s all about the attitude.
