Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 “Call of Duty” campaigns. For this list, we’ll be looking at the “COD” campaigns of which successfully weaved mission variety with compelling storytelling. What’s your favorite bullet-hell narrative in the COD saga? Make sure to let us know in the comment section below.

#10: “Call of Duty: WWII” (2017)

Back in 2017, fans were dying for a historical rendition of “Call of Duty” after so many futuristic installments. "WWII's" campaign gave fans that nostalgia but the decision from the writers to solely focus on a single American squad was definitely at risk of repetitiveness. However, the campaign has since become one of the best in the franchise. Missions which encompassed the Battle of the Bulge, Aachen, and Hürtgen Forest, had players pushing back German forces through the heartlands of Europe. Even storming the beaches of Normandy was something players hadn’t gotten to do since eleven years prior in “Call of Duty 2.” Similar to the likes of the acclaimed miniseries “Band of Brothers,” "WWII’s" campaign isn’t soon to be forgotten.

#9: “Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare” (2014)

Although the EXO suit movements were controversial at the time of this game’s release, there’s no denying it made for a fun and unique campaign. Set in the late 2050s, “Advanced Warfare”
follows soldiers rebelling against a private military corporation which has become the dominant armed force on earth. The story raises questions about state and corporation reliance, while simultaneously introducing new and exciting bits of tech. Sneaking through a forest with a cloaking ability is pretty awesome to say the least. “Advanced Warfare” found the right balance between a futuristic setting and still remaining recognizable as a “Call of Duty” game and it’s definitely a campaign we wish would have gotten a sequel.

#8: “Call of Duty 3” (2006)

While the first two games in the franchise were developed by Infinity Ward, “Call of Duty 3” was actually Treyarch’s first attempt at an installment. The campaign features American, British, Canadian, and Polish storylines, giving players the option to choose between different perspectives. Building off its predecessors, “COD 3” continued the action and excitement the first two games conjured up. It was also the first to introduce the sprint feature and thank God for whoever came up with that. However, it wouldn’t be until “COD 4,” that the series truly released its next game changer.

#7: “Call of Duty: World at War” (2008)

While most “COD” World War 2 campaigns follow the European Front, “World at War” had players take control of a Marine in the Pacific Theater as well as a Soviet in the Red Army. The story emphasized the brutality of humanity's largest conflict by showcasing scenarios not often seen in first person shooters. I mean, how many other “Call of Duty” campaigns have missions solely dedicated to burning people alive? And being that it’s one of the only “COD” campaigns to feature the Pacific Front, that alone makes it something special.

#6: “Call of Duty: Black Ops 2” (2012)

“Black Ops 2” was the first game to bring the franchise to the near future and it pulled it off quite well. Switching between the post-cold war era and the year 2025, the story follows Alex Mason in the years after “Black Ops” along with his now grown up son in the future. Continuing off the characters and groundwork the original game built, it uses its different time periods for not only its mission diversity, but also to convey its compelling generational story. This campaign questioned the security of A.I. military machines and defense systems and is perhaps more relevant today than ever. And given the fact 2025 is only a few years away now, boy do we feel old.

#5: “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare” (2019)

After the critically acclaimed “Modern Warfare'' trilogy, Infinity Ward tried their hand at developing new series’ but none of them ever really took off. “Modern Warfare'' was the first rebooted game in the franchise but utilized fresh iterations of old characters and a new setting to create one heck of a campaign. Missions such as “Clean House” and “The Wolf’s Den” have been praised for their remarkable realism and the fictional country of Urzikstan, in which the story takes place, makes way for an intriguing story. Many critics have said “Modern Warfare” was the best campaign that’s been released in quite some time and we are eager to see what the rebooted “MW2” will look like.

#4: “Call of Duty 2” (2005)

The original “Call of Duty” knocked the tone and feel of World War 2 out of the park. But it wasn’t until “Call of Duty 2,” which brought the franchise from PC to console, that “COD” really took a turn for the better. The campaign had players take control of soldiers from several different armies, which offered a wide array of missions and diverse player experiences. Although not next gen, levels such as “The Battle of Pointe du Hoc” were a huge deal at the time and players simply couldn’t get enough. “Call of Duty 2’s” campaign solidified the franchise as an epic first-person shooter that had nowhere to go but up.

#3: “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare” (2007)

The first “Modern Warfare” gave players a masterfully crafted story filled with exciting missions and complex characters. This campaign was groundbreaking when “Call of Duty” jumped to
next-gen and it gave players a sense of participating in a movie, rather than just completing a series of levels. Containing missions such as “All Ghillied Up,” which has been considered by many as the best “COD” level of all time, the game was a first of its kind and has since set the standard for campaigns in the franchise as a whole.

#2: “Call of Duty: Black Ops” (2010)

Technically a sequel to “World at War,” the original “Black Ops” helped Treyarch find its footing in a world dominated by “Modern Warfare” hype. “Black Ops” is told through a series of flashbacks as CIA agent Jason Hudson attempts to undo the Soviet brainwashing of protagonist Alex Mason. Missions ranging from within the jungles of Vietnam to covert special operations are some of the best in the series and the characters of Mason and Woods were Treyarch's answer to Infinity Ward's Soap and Price. Not only did this dynamic duo stick the landing, but who doesn’t love fighting in the jungle while listening to The Rolling Stones?

#1: “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2” (2009)

Perhaps the most anticipated “Call of Duty” of all time, “Modern Warfare 2” was the first “COD” to continue where the previous entry left off. With a jaw dropping inciting incident,
Task Force 141 is back at it again, this time to find the Russian Nationalists responsible for a staged terrorist attack. From sniper missions, to snowmobile chases, to defending the White House from a Russian invasion, “Modern Warfare 2” had it all. Not to mention the amazing cast of characters that hooked fans from around the world. “Modern Warfare 2’s” campaign was near perfect and it’s no wonder why fans continue to awe over it more than a decade later.
