#10: “Soldier of Fortune” series (2000-07)

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier - Ubisoft Preview

Blood and war-shooters often go together like legs and feet... unless if you shoot them off. While there is a heroic plot in the game somewhere full of stopping terrorists and dealing with germ warfare, the series has become well-known for its GHOUL engine. Why? Well remember what we said about shooting things off? This engine let players dismember their targets piece by piece... even after a person was killed. While it was possible to follow a non-violent path by simply shooting away your enemy’s gun, we’re fairly certain there were a lot of bloody torsos left behind as a last will and testament.

#9: “Fallout 3” (2008)

5 Key Differences Between the Fallout Series and Games

Fallout 3 has been hailed as a pretty monumental game. The post-apocalyptic story. The grim, yet beautiful setting. The fact that you can perfectly target and shoot someone and take glee in their head flying off in slow motion. The explosions that turn someone’s body into ink-blot tests of blood – especially if you’ve picked the bloody mess perk. The body chunks drenched in red like they’ve been marinated in-... you get where we’re going with this. We suppose the violence shouldn’t be a surprise since everyone is trying to survive the dismal circumstances, but still, do we really need to see mutilated bodies falling in slow motion? Yes. Yes we do.

#8: “Chiller” (1986)

No, we’re not talking about the NES port of the game from 1990, we’re talking about the torture chambered arcade horror from 1986. That’s right, arcade, as in an arcade cabinet in a public place where anyone could grab a light gun and torture people. Yep, we said light gun. The goal was to mutilate people as fast as possible, including shooting a torture device and watching it do the killing for you. To no one’s surprise, the game sold poorly in the U.S. Honestly, we can’t believe someone had the balls to even make a game like this for an arcade release.

#7: “God of War” series (2005-13)

After being tricked into killing his own family, Kratos is on a quest for revenge, and that revenge has left behind an unmeasurable amount of dead bodies and blood. How much blood? Try a hurricane’s worth that soaks the land and causes it to flood over in red. We’re not exaggerating, Kratos spills so much blood that there’s a trophy in the third game for covering him in the equivalent of 500 buckets of it, which is easily doable as the blood of his enemies becomes caked onto his skin. Talk about a disastrous bucket challenge. God of War? More like God of Blood.

#6: “Nano Breaker” (2005)

Teeeeeechnically, it’s not blood, it’s “liquid.” That makes it better, right? Preeeeeetty sure that’s blood, Konami. As Jake, you’re armed with a plasma blade that can transform into a variety of weapons because hell, why stop at a blade? Your goal is to help restore order on the island facility, “Nanomachine Island,” which we’re sure can be done in a cool-headed manner despite Jake’s nickname being “The Genocide Hero.” What makes this violence unique isn’t the gameplay, it’s the fact that you can change the color of the blood. You haven’t experienced true slaughter until it leaves rainbow sherbet colors behind.

#5: “No More Heroes” series (2007-10)

Sometimes, an otaku just has to get his hands dirty. As Travis Touchdown, you have a few simple goals in life: get money for video games, sleep with the hot French girl, and become the number one assassin. That assassin tidbit is where the blood comes in. Armed with a beam sword won in an internet auction, Travis cuts down his enemies one rank at a time, usually in spectacularly over-the-top fashions where you could shower in the ridiculous amount of blood if you wanted to. This goes well with the game’s artstyle and bizarre cast of characters, making each death unique and downright fun.

#4: “Dead Space” series (2008-13)

In space, no one can hear you scream, and no one knows that better than Isaac Clarke. Deadly alien creatures have obliterated an entire crew of people, leaving finger-painted trails of blood in their wake. If you manage to push through the tortuous ways you can be killed, there’s two more games in the series with more blood and a good dose of trauma from our main character. We can’t say we blame him. Necromorphs are nasty creatures, each with its own elaborate ways of killing you. The grotesqueness works both ways, though, since you have to dismember their limbs in order to kill them.

#3: “MadWorld” (2009)

Imagine a group coming into your city, infecting everyone with a virus that only gives you 24 hours to live, and promising a vaccine to anyone that kills another person. And they say Japanese game shows are crazy. Yeah, did we mention that this is the format to the game show, “DeathWatch”? Fortunately, as Jack Cayman, you’re an audience favorite. Probably because of your larger than life physique and the retractable chainsaw built onto your arm. Not only is the game a bloodbath, but due to black and white art style, the bold, red blood stands out like a sore, decapitated thumb.

#2: “Manhunt” series (2003-07)

Manhunt: Retrospective | MojoPlays

As if the title wasn’t enough of a giveaway, this game series is not for the squeamish. Like many other entries on this list, it’s the way the violence and blood is presented that makes this game stand out. As James Earl Cash, you’re a death row prisoner with a chance at freedom if you follow the instructions of “The Director.” This leads to many, many, maaaaaany deaths -- or rather “executions”. These stealthy kills have three levels: hasty, violent, and gruesome, with gruesome being the kind of death that belongs on this list. Oh, and you’re graded on these kills, so the bloodier, the better. That is of course, unless you played on the censored console versions – but honestly, we can sort of understand that decision. Before we get to our bloodiest pick, let’s let our stomachs settle during these honorable mentions: “Happy Wheels” (2010) “Harvester” (1996) “Prototype series” (2009-12) “Killing Floor 2” (2015) “Bloodrayne series” (2002-04) “X-Men Origins Wolverine: Uncaged Edition” (2009)

#1: “Mortal Kombat” series (1992-)

Also in:

10 Times Mortal Kombat Was CENSORED

Was there really any doubt? While Mortal Kombat certainly isn’t the first game to paint the floor in an abundance of red, and it isn’t the sole reason behind the ESRB, it’s become THE series for brutally annihilating your opponents. It’s not just the graphic violence, it’s the way the series goes about portraying that violence. It’s one thing to smash someone’s jaw out, but to take a selfie to seal the deal? That, ladies and gentlemen, is what makes Mortal Kombat such a gem, and no other series has captured the FINISH HIM mantra quite like this one. Do you agree with our list? Which video game do you think is the bloodiest? For more gorey top tens published everyday, be be sure to subscribe to WatchMojo.com... unless if you’re still nauseous.
