For this list, we're taking a look at the episodes that show off what gave this series its critical acclaim, from feel-good humor, to characters development, in-depth world building, and moments that tug at the heartstrings. We'll only be looking at the canon episodes, so the April Fools' day crossover episode “Say Uncle” is ruled out. Also, if you're not caught up, there WILL be spoilers.
#10: “The Return” & “Jail Break”

This two-parter had been building up throughout the entire second half of season 1, and it delivered. With the threat of an on-coming Peridot, the citizens of Beach City are evacuated, Steven included – but he can’t leave his family behind. Peridot, Jasper, and the captive Lapis Lazuli, three Homeworld Gems, arrive, looking for the Crystal Gems. They get taken aboard a warship headed for Homeworld, leaving it up to Steven to break them all out. This episode not only confirmed what fans had theorized before the two-parter aired, but also features Garnet and Jasper going toe-to-toe, all while Garnet sings a catchy tune about how strong she really is. In the end, when Lapis and Jasper fuse, it seems like the story is just beginning.
#9: “Lion 3: Straight to Video”
How many other kids can say they have a wonderful pink human being for a pet? Lion’s usually a pretty independent cat, but all of a sudden he starts acting a little clingy and trying to lie on Steven’s face. And we thought Pearl was bad! However, Steven can’t stay mad at his pink feline friend – especially when he finds out a little secret about Lion: that he has a world hidden in his mane. While exploring, Steven finds a videotape with a heartwarming message from his mother, Rose Quartz, from before he was born. Steven never got to know his mom, but comes to understand that she is a part of him. Gracefully, the show tackles some pretty heavy subject matter.

Amethyst is usually the fun-loving, mischievous little quartz with a bottomless stomach; but she’s not without her vulnerable side. After reading one of his favorite books, Steven and Amethyst decide to try a life on the road… though it doesn’t go according to plan. Along the way, Amethyst shows Steven where she was made: the Kindergarten – a creepy, desolate wasteland that once grew other gems for Homeworld. The Gems aren’t proud of what Homeworld did, and Amethyst is left in a deep pit of self-loathing. She is frustrated over her home, and feels like she’s just a mistake. However, even after the tension that horrible place has built, the others wouldn’t give Amethyst up for anything. Sometimes, the show can get serious.
#7: “Chille Tid”
After Lapis and Jasper’s shocking fusion at the end of Season 1, the Gems try to find the unstable Malachite. However, the search is put on hold when Steven needs sleep; so he, Amethyst, and Pearl have a sleepover for some chille tid, which is Norwegian for “chilling time.” A fun look inside Steven’s dreams – and a hilarious peek at Pearl’s – quickly turns into eerie nightmares about Lapis; he then starts talking to her telepathically. Steven’s trip inside Malachite’s head shows us the stress Lapis is under to keep Jasper under control and the dark turns the show can take. It’s amazing how quickly a night for relaxing can turn into a stressful one.

One of the best things about Steven is that he is always being taught something new about life and about being a gem. Steven learns about Garnet’s “future vision” which allows her to see possible outcomes… and not all of them end well for a certain half-gem. The new information causes Steven to panic at every turn, imagining every single bad outcome that could happen to him. Telling him about her powers was a risky move on Garnet’s end, wanting for them to be closer. She tries to teach him a valuable lesson, that the future is uncertain, but only he can control what happens. Garnet’s sometimes hard to understand, but we do know that she only wants what’s best for her Steven.
#5: “Sworn to the Sword”
Ever since their awkward first meeting, Steven and Connie have been the closest of friends – ‘jam buds,’ you might say. Lately, Connie wants to get more involved in Steven’s life, so she decides to take up swordsmanship. With a little convincing, Pearl is eager to train Connie to be a “knight” for Steven. Unfortunately, Pearl has a strong devotion her swordsmanship and takes teaching Connie too far. Steven can’t stand the idea of Connie getting hurt over him, especially when they could be working as a team in battle. Their combined fighting style proves to be extremely impressive, with Connie on the offense and Steven on the defense, just like strawberries and biscuits. After an awkward confrontation, Pearl finally understands how well they work together.

Fusion is what literally brings gems closer together. But for a certain gem/human hybrid, fusion isn’t easy. Nothing a little time with his jam bud, Connie, can’t fix! When they start to dance like no one’s watching, suddenly… enter Stevonnie. As Connie and Steven face this new milestone in their lives, Garnet only has one piece of advice. At first, being together as a fusion does seem like fun, but after a while, it starts to feel lonely. The subject of fusion is an intimate one on this show, and this episode features Steven and Connie at their closest – sharing feelings of excitement and anxiety not unlike teenagers feel as they grow up. Thankfully, their panicking won’t last forever.

When he accidentally meets Stevonnie, Greg shares a part of his love story for the ages with Steven and Connie, about how he discovered fusion. Back when he was a rock star, he sees Rose – the leader of a gem rebellion – combine with Pearl to become Rainbow Quartz. After a little salty teasing from Pearl, Greg wants to be the first human to fuse with Rose. Greg and Rose’s chemistry is shown at its best throughout this episode – Rose’s curiosity about humans, Greg’s fear about being good enough for his giant space lady, and both of them trying to figure out how love works. Even though they didn’t “physically” fuse, they did succeed in building a stronger connection. Isn’t that a valuable lesson?

Summer’s come to Beach City again, and Steven’s going to spend it the way any normal kid would – with a magical mirror that Pearl gave him. The mirror starts communicating with our favorite hybrid, which raises suspicions for the Gems. Their worries are confirmed when Steven releases the Gem trapped inside the mirror, Lapis Lazuli, who tries to steal the earth’s ocean to build a tower to the sky. This two-parter is a game-changer, teaching Steven that some gems from Homeworld aren’t so friendly. Their encounter with Lapis ends smoothly – thanks to Steven – and the ocean is returned, but the threat of Homeworld only gets stronger from here. At the climax, we’re treated to one of the deepest and most heart-breaking moments of the entire series. In just over 11 minutes, this episode successfully covers the heavy topic of dealing with the loss of a loved one and shows us how deep the relationship between two characters can really go. ‘Rose’s Scabbard’ is a fantastic example of what this series has to offer.
