Hello, and welcome to TopX, where we count down the very best that YouTube has to offer! Today, we're looking at the most sensational cinematic sneak peaks of the year, as we look at the top 10 best YouTube movie trailers of 2016.
For this list, we're looking at all movie trailers that received at least 1 million views throughout the year, and left us wanting more.
#10: “Kong: Skull Island” (2017)

King Kong is perhaps one of the most iconic characters in movie history, so when the first trailer for “Kong: Skull Island” dropped in July, it naturally caused quite a stir. Scheduled for a slightly delayed release early in 2017, the movie sees Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman and Brie Larson lead a band of daring¬– but probably doomed– explorers into the giant gorilla’s homeland. Trailer #1 gave tantalising glimpses of the title character; trailer #2 revealed the monster in all his glory. And while we wait with bated breath for this film to hit our screens, these trailers also whet our appetites for something even bigger – a King Kong/Godzilla crossover sequel looms extraordinarily large on the horizon, pencilled in for 2020.
#9: “Sausage Party” (2016)
As one of the most random and oddly traumatic trailers of the year, the promo for “Sausage Party” changed the way we see supermarkets. Because what if our groceries could secretly walk and talk, and every piece of food we ever bought was weirdly excited to be going home with us? And what if that excitement quickly turned to horror when food realized that it was designed to be eaten? The “Sausage Party” trailer poses these most pressing of questions, and manages to introduce the sizzling sexual chemistry between a sausage and his hot dog bun girlfriend. It’s not your typical taster clip, but it is a lot tastier than the average.
#8: “Don’t Breathe” (2016)

It’s claustrophobic, atmospheric, and unnerving, and it’s the best horror movie trailer of 2016. “Don’t Breathe” sees three would-be robbers break into the home of a blind man, believing there to be a fortune stored there. But while they had hoped to strike it rich, they in fact become embroiled in an edge of your seat, super-sensory standoff with the harrowing homeowner. The biggest compliment we can give this trailer is that by the time it finishes, you find yourself doing exactly what the movie’s title instructs: trying your very best not to breathe or move a muscle.
#7: “Wonder Woman” (2017)

In what proved a very significant year for the DC Extended Universe, the first look at “Wonder Woman” had both critics and fans brimming with anticipation. Gal Gadot takes the lead for the fourth instalment in the DC franchise, which is directed by Patty Jenkins and scheduled for release in summer 2017. Gadot is an Amazonian princess aiming to end World War I, while Chris Pine plays Steve Trevor, a fighter pilot who first meets Wonder Woman while washed up on her home shores. The teaser trailer doesn’t reveal all, but it does tell us all we need to know; expect intense battles, iconic costumes and out of this world fighting skills.
#6: “Beauty and the Beast” (2017)

A tale as old as time and a retelling of Disney’s pioneering animation of 1991, “Beauty and the Beast” is one of the most eagerly awaited movies of 2017. Emma Watson stars as Belle, and Dan Stevens is the Beast for a movie that, judging by this trailer, is set to be magical, romantic and visually stunning. Live action Disney remakes have become increasingly popular in Hollywood in recent years, but the early signs suggest that this one could be something particularly special. The teaser gives fans of the Disney classic a chance to reacquaint themselves with their favourite characters, and introduces a whole new generation to the story. The few short glimpses of the ballroom scene are enough to have us waltzing around our own rooms!
#5: “Doctor Strange” (2016)

This trailer for the fourteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe introduced us to something more than a little different from the comic book canon. “Doctor Strange” sees Marvel truly question our reality – beyond even its typical superhero storylines – for a mind-bending, multidimensional look at time and place. With shots of worlds falling in on themselves, glimpses of mystical characters and locations, plus a fabulous first look at Strange’s trademark red cape, it also boasts Benedict Cumberbatch’s debut in the MCU. All held together by Tilda Swinton’s wise words, it does what all good trailers should do; creates questions which can only be answered by watching the movie itself.
#4: “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” (2016)

Following the massively popular and successful Harry Potter film series might’ve seemed like an impossible task. But with the April 2016 release of a teaser for “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” what had once seemed an unlikely dream for fans became full on reality. “Fantastic Beasts” is the first instalment of a five-film series, and the ninth movie in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World. It relocates the witchcraft and wizardry to 1920’s New York, and introduces Newt Scamander, played by Eddie Redmayne, who collects and cares for magical creatures. While this trailer nods to traditional Harry Potter on more than one occasion, it’s also clear that there’s an abundance of new magic for us No-Maj’s to enjoy – plus a few fleeting bars of a famously spellbinding soundtrack.
#3: “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (2016)

After trailers for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” smashed all sorts of records in 2015, when the first look at “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” dropped in April, it caused yet more excitement for fans of the reinvigorated sci-fi series. As a standalone movie in the Star Wars universe, set after events of “Revenge of the Sith” but shortly before those of 1977’s “A New Hope”, “Rogue One” offers an exciting new perspective to the saga. The trailer manages to be in keeping with everything that has gone before it, but also stands out in its own right. It introduces Felicity Jones as the rebel Jyn Erso and provides an ominous glimpse of the Empire’s Death Star. While “The Force Awakens” was set years after the rebellion, this trailer throws fans right back to when it was all just beginning.
#2: “Captain America: Civil War” (2016)

As 2016’s first new instalment to the Marvel Universe, “Captain America: Civil War” had long been tipped to take a different direction compared to other Marvel films. This second teaser was also the second-most viewed trailer on YouTube in 2016, as it revealed the meaning behind the movie’s title. Pitting Steve Rogers against Tony Stark, Captain America against Iron Man, it shows that the Avengers are very much divided following “The Age of Ultron”. Featuring many familiar faces and some new characters, including the long-awaited arrival of Spiderman, this clip watches like a who’s who of the MCU. It’s so stacked with superheroes, it’s a wonder the actual movie didn’t end up being 4 hours long. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. It promised us the ‘worst heroes ever,’ but the first glimpse of “Suicide Squad” was the best trailer of the year. Featuring an ensemble cast including Jared Leto, Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Cara Delevingne, who bring to life a long list of typically villainous DC comic book characters, it laughed in the face of formulaic superhero films. Full to bursting with bad guys, big guns and good gags, no other blockbuster created as much of a buzz – and whoever chose “Bohemian Rhapsody” as a backing track deserves extra special credit.
