Li Yunzhen, played by Qi Xiaxia, is a Grand Princess, albeit one who is said to indulge in worldly pleasures. The Emperor, determined to bring her down, sends a spy to expose her supposed hedonism. Upon realizing that her true nature is far from the rumors defaming her, the spy, named Gu Xuanqing, played by Jin Chao, falls for the princess. She softens for him, and he surrenders to her, giving us major butterflies. Safe to say, what the show lacks in production value, it makes up for in romance.

#8: “Dong Lan Xue” (2023)

Fans loved Qi Xiaxia and Jin Chao together so much, they had to reunite for another mini-drama. In “Dong Lan Xue”, he’s the prince and she’s his maid, and she’ll do anything to protect him. As they face vicious palace politics and ruthless schemes together, he falls irrevocably in love with her. However, she’s fixated on revenge, even if that means letting him go. A fateful and deeply passionate romance blooms between the two, and it’ll leave you swooning left and right. The gorgeous cinematography and elaborate costumes also add to the appeal of the series, making it a worthwhile watch.

At first, Lucien has not even an iota of compassion for the poor princess, whom he treats in dehumanizing ways. Yet, her light manages to break through the walls around his heart and heal his inner wounds. Although the episodes are extremely short and the pacing is breathless, the actors do a fantastic job of portraying the depth of their characters’ emotions. You’ll be invested in no time … literally.

If you want to dip your feet into the Chinese Xianxia genre, but are intimidated by some of the most popular titles – which tend to be quite long – try this mini-drama. The plot revolves around Feng Ruoyao, a demon realm ruler, and Mo Chenyuan, an Immortal Lord. She’s smitten by him, enough to force him into a marriage, but quickly realizes that getting along with him is not going to be easy. She tries to get rid of him, but surprisingly, Mo Chenyuan has no intentions of leaving her. The premise is ripe for sweet romantic comedy, but the show doesn’t hesitate to go the steamy way, either. “Thousands of Years of Love” will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy inside.

#5: “Butterflied Lover” (2023)

General Ling Changfeng’s happy marriage is turned upside down when his wife, Tang Qianyue, is struck by a mysterious affliction on their third anniversary. However, Qianyue is not the only one affected – the townsfolk are too. To protect his beloved, Ling Changfeng hides her before setting out to find the cure to her condition, come hell or high water. What’s most charming about this show is the portrayal of our main couple’s mundane but magical married life. They’re endlessly devoted to each other, determined to stay together even if the world turns on them. As a bonus, we get an adorable secondary couple, too! So, if you like your romance heart-wrenching with a hint of horror, go for “Butterflied Lover”.

#4: “A Familiar Stranger” (2022)

Love can make one do strange things … like commit identity theft just so you can avoid an arranged marriage and be with your lover. That’s what Shen Qin did in this drama. She’s the prime minister’s daughter, set to marry General Xiao Hansheng. To be with her beloved Prince Ning, she manipulates an artist, Shi Qi, and swaps faces with her. So now, Shi Qi and Xiao Hansheng are engaged and slowly falling in love, all while she has Shen Qin’s appearance. Fortunately, the affection between the two, though complex, is mature, tender, and far from skin-deep. The actors deliver nuanced performances, and the plot is riveting enough to keep you hooked. That’s what makes it perfect for binge-watching.

#3: “Fated to My Forbidden Vampire” (2024)

This vertical drama is as cliché as it gets, but it’s so addictive, you won’t even mind. An ill-fated human girl, Heather, is taken in by the Blakes, a family of cruel vampires. She faces relentless mistreatment, especially at the hands of Fiona Blake, until her savior, Theo, comes along. Theo is the top dog among the vamps, and everyone wants him, but he ends up forging a blood oath with Heather. Jealous of their relationship, Fiona hatches a murderous plot because she has to have him. The story is simple, but thoroughly entertaining as you root for the main couple, while praying for the downfall of the villains. Although the melodrama is turned up to eleven, you’ll leave satisfied.

#2: “You Belong with Me” (2024)

What do you do when your boyfriend cheats on you with your adoptive sister? You get with his uncle. At least, that’s what our heroine Kristine does when she finds out her man, Eric, has been unfaithful. As it turns out, this uncle she cozied up to for revenge, Henry Lockwood, is also her grand boss, and suddenly, it’s hard not to mix business with pleasure. What we adore about this series is how Kristine is no damsel in distress. She has Henry wrapped around her finger, and he loves it. It also helps that they have undeniable chemistry. The plot might be formulaic, but its corny charm will win you over.

#1: “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” (2024)

Contract marriage, second-chance romance, hidden identity – you name it! This show has every fan-favorite trope thrown in to create the perfect guilty pleasure concoction. Molly Anderson plays Lisa, a woman who is divorced by her rich contract husband, Aidan, played by Jarred Harper. The catch is, Aidan has never even seen Lisa’s face, even though she has feelings for him. Following their separation, Lisa decides to find herself a rebound, only to end up in bed with Aidan, who doesn’t recognize her. To make matters worse … or better, he’s the new CEO of the company she works at. Their chaotic romance unfolds as they keep crossing paths, making viewers’ hearts flutter. The writing and acting are commendable, too. So, don’t miss it!
