Release Date: July 13, 2018 [U.S.] If you need a break from all the explosive blockbusters that typically dominate summer, this Sundance favorite should provide a welcome change of pace. The always interesting Joaquin Phoenix is already generating award consideration for his performance as John Callahan, who became a provocative cartoonist following a car accident that left him paralyzed from the diaphragm down. With a supporting cast that includes Jonah Hill, Jack Black, and Rooney Mara, not to mention Gus Van Sant behind the camera, this one’s sure to go far.

Release Date: July 20, 2018 [U.S.] 2014’s “The Equalizer” would’ve been a fairly straightforward action flick if it weren’t for Antoine Fuqua’s stylish direction and Denzel Washington’s charismatic performance. That being said, the talent involved ultimately elevated the material, delivering a thriller that was fun and even worthy of a follow-up. Upon learning that a friend and former colleague has been murdered, Robert McCall sets out to get even. If you’re in the mood for more slick fight choreography and gunplay, set your watch for this sequel’s release date.
#8: “Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind”
Release Date: July 16, 2018 [U.S.] Robin Williams was such a larger than life talent that it’s still hard to believe he’s no longer with us. Although Williams passed away almost four years ago, his presence and influence can still be felt. This HBO documentary, which received rave reviews from Sundance back in January, takes us inside the comedic genius’ one-of-a-kind mind. Chronicling Williams’ rise to fame in the 1970s to his tragic final days, we can expect a lovingly crafted tribute full of laughs and tears.
#7: “Sweetener” by Ariana Grande
Release Date: July 20, 2018 Ariana Grande’s fourth studio album is significant for a number of reasons. For starters, it’s dropping just over a year after the Manchester Arena bombing, which occurred following one of Grande’s concerts. With that in mind, it’s fitting that Grande’s first track since the attack would be titled, “No Tears Left to Cry.” Likewise, the album’s name also possesses a deeper meaning. As Grande put it, “Sweetener” is a message to her fans “that you can take a bad situation and make it better.”
#6: “Eighth Grade”
Release Date: July 13, 2018 [U.S.] Today’s list is heavy on Sundance movies and “Eighth Grade” just might be the most buzz-worthy. Comedian and YouTube sensation Bo Burnham makes his feature directorial debut with this coming of age dramedy. Actress Elsie Fisher goes from voicing Agnes in the “Despicable Me” films to playing Kayla, an awkward girl about to transition into the world of high school. Earning universal acclaim on Rotten Tomatoes, “Eighth Grade” seems like further proof that studio A24 can do virtually no wrong.

Release Date: July 4, 2018 [U.S.] “The Purge” movies might be preposterous, but there is a truly fascinating premise at the center of this franchise: what would happen if all crime was legal for twelve hours every year? The sequels expanded upon this intriguing setup and arguably improved upon the original 2013 film. This prequel will take us back to the beginning, exploring why anybody thought the Purge would be a good idea in the first place. Here’s hoping the film provides some legitimate thrills, clever commentary, and more fodder for “Rick and Morty.”

Release Date: July 22, 2018 Few current anime series have garnered such a widespread mainstream following like Attack on Titan, mostly thanks to its constantly twisting narrative, spectacular animation, and incredible soundtrack. But for this season, it’s not just the titans that our heroes have to contend with, as the trailer indicates the arrival of the antagonistic Anti-Personnel Control Squad, not to mention the long awaited debut of Kenny Ackerman. There’s certainly a lot to take in, so best to start binge watching now to catch up.

Release Date: July 25, 2018 From “It,” to “Gerald’s Game,” to “1922,” we appear to be in a new golden age of Stephen King adaptions and this Hulu series may be the most ambitious outing yet. Those familiar with King’s work will recognize Castle Rock as the fictional town that frequently appears in his stories. The series will thus delve into the many themes and locations connected through King’s multiverse. This isn’t the first time executive producer J. J. Abrams has tackled Stephen King, as he previously brought us the acclaimed “11.22.63” miniseries.

Forced to go on the run, our hero must face a series of death-defying obstacles, including Henry Cavill and his mustache of steel.

Release Date: July 6, 2018 [U.S.] After the insanity that was “Infinity War,” MCU fans could use something lighter to calm their nerves. “Ant-Man and the Wasp” looks just like what the doctor ordered, complete with giant Hello Kitty Pez dispensers. As the title suggests, the film will not only see the return of Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, but also center on Evangeline Lilly’s Wasp. Bridging the gap between “Captain America: Civil War” and Thanos’ big attack, the film promises plenty of action, comedy, and “crazy stuff” as we boldly venture into the Quantum Realm.
