Just one glorious month of summer left. Let’s make the most of it! Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the Top 10 Most Anticipated Releases of August 2016. For this list, we’re taking a look at new releases in the realms of movies, music, and video games, as well as premieres of new TV series and new seasons of ongoing series. We’ve excluded “Batman: The Killing Joke” since it already got a digital release in July. We’re also leaving out any sporting events, like the 2016 Summer Olympics.
#10: “World of Warcraft: Legion” Release Date: August 30, 2016
The recent “Warcraft” movie may have divided audiences, but “World of Warcraft” remains a gaming phenomenon nonetheless. “Legion,” the sixth expansion pack in this online RPG takes players to the Broken Isles, a newly unveiled continent in Azeroth. The expansion will increase the level cap from 100 to 110, as well as marking the debut of the demon hunter hero class along with all new artifact weapons too. Since 2004, “WoW” has continuously been the gift that keeps on giving, and “Legion” is bound to have gamers everywhere calling in sick to work.

#9: “War Dogs” Release Date: August 19, 2016 [U.S.]
Based on an insane true story, “War Dogs” stars Miles Teller and Jonah Hill as David Packouz and Efraim Diveroli, respectively. After scoring a $300 million contract with the Pentagon, these young arms dealers find themselves neck deep in money and trouble. With director Todd Phillips of “Old School” and “The Hangover” behind the camera, “War Dogs” has the potential to be an explosive satire of the military, the government, and the American Dream. Picture “The Wolf of Wall Street” as a wartime action comedy.
#8: “Brave Enough” by Lindsey Stirling Release Date: August 19, 2016
Hip-hop violinist Lindsey Stirling has already released two successful albums, one of which even won a Billboard Music Award. Her third studio album, Brave Enough, was announced on June 28. Stirling later uploaded a music video for “The Arena” on her main YouTube channel. Calling “Mad Max: Fury Road” to mind, this post-apocalyptic music video overflows with the inventive choreography and passionate medleys we’ve come to associate with Stirling’s work. If the rest of the album is this mind-blowing, Brave Enough could be her boldest outing yet.

#7: “The Get Down” – Season 1 Release Date: August, 12, 2016
Baz Luhrmann, the visionary filmmaker behind “Romeo + Juliet” and “Moulin Rouge”, has been developing this musical drama series for over a decade. The project finally found a home on Netflix with the first half of season one set to premiere this month. Taking place in the Bronx during the late 70’s, the story follows a group of teenagers as disco, punk, and hip-hop rise into popularity. Based on the rousing trailer, “The Get Down” looks like it could be “Empire” meets “Fame” with a touch of “Saturday Night Fever.” Groovy!
#6: “Pete’s Dragon” Release Date: August 12, 2016 [U.S.]
This reboot of the 1977 Disney classic of course centers on a boy named Pete and his green dragon Elliot. Outside of that basic premise, though, director David Lowery promises that his film will be significantly different from its predecessor. For starters, this interpretation won’t be a musical and Elliot will be brought to life through CGI rather than hand-drawn animation. Disney had a roaring success earlier this year with their remake of “The Jungle Book.” Let’s hope “Pete’s Dragon” can soar to the same heights.
#5: “The Founder” Release Date: August 5, 2016 [U.S.]
Between “Birdman” and “Spotlight,” Michael Keaton has starred in two back-to-back Best Picture winners. Early Oscar buzz suggests that Keaton could be this year’s Best Actor frontrunner for his portrayal of Ray Kroc, the charismatic businessman who turned McDonalds into a billion-dollar fast food chain. “The Founder” focuses on Kroc’s partnership with the McDonald brothers, who couldn’t see the full potential of their creation. Directed by John Lee Hancock of “The Blind Side,” the film just might have critics and audiences saying, “I’m lovin’ it.”
#4: “Deus Ex: Mankind Divided” Release Date: August 23, 2016
Set in 2029, this entry in the acclaimed “Deus Ex” series will once again follow Adam Jensen, who has been tasked with hunting down augmented terrorists and the truth. Along the way, Jensen discovers that his technologically enhanced body has a few new toys to play with. “Mankind Divided” received some backlash for its reward-based pre-order plan, but Square Enix fortunately cancelled this system. As for the gameplay, “Mankind Divided” will incorporate the same immersive storytelling and badass stealth mechanics that have made “Deus Ex” a hit franchise.
#3: “Sausage Party” Release Date: August 12, 2016 [U.S.]
The premise for “Sausage Party” is reminiscent of “Toy Story,” but instead of sentient playthings, our heroes are sentient food products. For a split second, audiences might assume that this CGI animated feature is wholesome family entertainment. Anybody who’s seen the hilarious red-band trailer, however, knows that “Sausage Party” isn’t for your little ones. We’re also pretty sure it’s not for your grandparents. If you’re a fan of Seth Rogen, though, this comedy should tickle your funny bone, as well as your taste buds.
#2: “No Man’s Sky” Release Date: August 9, 2016 [U.S.]
We’ve played open universe games before, but none of them had over 18 quintillion planets! Through a mathematical computation, gamers will be able to explore the uncharted universe of “No Man’s Sky” for a lifetime and still not see everything. In addition to winning multiple accolades at E3 2014, “No Man’s Sky” has also received praise from Stephen Colbert, who compared Hello Games co-founder Sean Murray to God. Assuming we don’t have to endure any more delays, the sky’s the limit.
#1: “Suicide Squad” Release Date: August 5, 2016 [U.S.]
“Batman v Superman” wasn’t exactly a masterpiece, but “Suicide Squad” may set the DC Extended Universe on the right path. This anti-superhero flick centers on a team of incarcerated villains recruited by the government to take on hazardous missions. Director David Ayer brings together an all-star cast that includes Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Will Smith as Deadshot, and an especially creepy Jared Leto as the Joker. Despite having a PG-13 rating, “Suicide Squad” can still hit its target with the right balance of action, comedy, and mayhem. Do you agree with our list?
