For this list, we’re welcoming in the hot season with a collection of new anime that look primed and ready to set the scene ablaze. Think we missed any fiery contenders? Let us know in the comments!

#10: “The Case Study of Vanitas” (2021)

Studio Bones and vampires? Well, there’s a winning combination if we ever heard one. As opposed to a bloodthirsty buffet, this one seems to be offering a far more introspective look at the creatures of the night. In pursuit of the infamous vampire known as Vanitas, born under a blue moon and said to have a vendetta against his race, a fellow bloodsucker discovers that the legend is a tad more on the…human side than inspected. Hopefully this one isn’t all flash, skips out on the sparkles and gives us something fresh to sink our teeth into.

#9: “Scarlet Nexus” (2021)

Based on the upcoming Bandai Namco game, that would usually raise alarm bells given what we know of anime adaptations of poorly constructed RPGS. However, given that it’s not having to adapt some crappy mobile game, the action looks decent, and there’s no CGI monstrosities in sight, we’re hoping for this to be a fun jaunt. With entities known as the Others devouring humans, it falls to a suppression team to hunt them down before their species are taken out. It might be a little generic in plot, but if the action delivers on all fronts we can see ourselves enjoying this one!

#8: “The Detective Is Already Dead” (2021)

It’s hard to say if this will be the mystery anime for the ages, but one thing’s for sure, it has a serious number of cute girls helming it! An apparent disaster magnet, Kimizuka finds himself unceremoniously dragged along as the assistant of a high schooler who considers herself a detective. If this thing plays its cards right in terms of amping up the explosiveness of its crime capers and integrating the harem element right, it can hopefully hit that sweet spot left over from Quintessential Quintuplets.

#7: “Idaten Deities in the Peaceful Generation” (2021)

Apparently, MAPPA isn’t feeling that Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen burnout, since they’re also bringing this comedic fight fest along for the ride. After a horde of demons are released into the world, it falls to the few remaining battle-hardened gods to clean everything up. While some might feel trepidatious given what happened with God of High School, the wacky and over the top aesthetics of this battle shounen paint it as a completely different breed of beast! And if MAPPA is known for anything, it’s making crazy concepts translate into hardcore hype!

#6: “How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom” (2021)

Finally! The isekai we’ve all been waiting for! One that doesn’t deal with war with swords and magic, but with administrative reform! Taken to a fantasy world, plopped on the throne, and abruptly engaged to a princess, it falls to a Japanese everyman to save a kingdom from collapse. Lucky for them, he just so happens to be a whiz at economics, and plans to help his new home prosper. Naturally, this comes with quite the bit of culture shock, and a harem to boot. Because there is nothing sexier than a man who knows how to work a spreadsheet!

#5: “The Honor Student at Magic High School” (2021)

Top 20 High School Romance Anime

Ever wanted to see the Irregular at Magic High School, but from the perspective of Tatsuya’s little sister? Well, here you go. Taking a rather Railgun approach to the series, this retelling of the original might be lacking in its stoic and OP lead, but will at least give us some fantasy high-jinks as Miyuki endeavours to prove herself as a capable student…and an interesting character. Expect a heavy layer of slice of life, romantic drama here, but if you’re a fan of this world chances are you’re already chomping at the bit.

#4: “My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!” Season Two (2021)

Also in:

Top 10 Anime of Summer 2018

She’s back! The harem queen who somehow, everywhere she goes, seems to earn the hearts of otome NPCs of every size, shape and gender. After establishing herself as a romantic force of nature, Katarina continues to do all she can to avoid the canon ending of being killed off as the villainess of this world’s story. Of course, with so many lovestruck partners in the making, there’s bound to be a few conflicts brewing. Guess there’s only so many times a tea party can placate potential assassins.

#3: “Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S” (2021)

Whether you’re in it to see Kobayashi and Tohru come closer as maid and master, can’t get enough of Kanna’s infinite cuteness, or you’re all about Lucoa’s ara ara appeal, then this long-awaited sequel is sure to put a fire under you. While it may have sparked a bit of pre-release outrage on account of its new villain and her indomitable assets, we’re hoping S continues the warmth and fun the original brought to us in droves. Who knows, maybe we’ll get some epic dragon battles this time around!

#2: “Higurashi: When They Cry – Sotsu” (2021)

Gou reintroduced the horror and gore of the original whilst also melting a lot of minds by revealing itself to be a sequel in disguise. Now it seems they’re taking that idea and stretching it as far as they can with Rika and Satako’s new conflict as they venture into new territory. Will Rika finally escape this new cycle of death? Or will Satako finally have her way with her? All we can be certain of is that the total body count is going to keep on rising!

#1: “That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime” Season Two, Part Two (2021)

They ended things last time with Rimuru becoming a Demon Lord and everything on the threshold of war, of course we’re excited to see how things turn out! Stronger than ever before, the almighty slime looks set to take on enemies from all sides, which shouldn’t be a problem now that Veldora has finally been freed and is about to show what the long-imprisoned storm dragon can do. We’re just hoping they’re able to go all out and match or even surpass the Megiddo scene!
