Obviously we are excluding shows with nudity and excessive violence, and are making a distinction between North American release and the Japanese originals. #10: “Yu-Gi-Oh!” (2000-04)

Also in:

Top 10 Anime Deaths We Waited Years To See

This is the show that all other card battle anime take aspire to. Originally based on the manga of the same name, Yu-Gi-Oh! stars Yugi and his friends as they save the world from various enemies by dueling them in card games. The success of this show spawned multiple spin-offs, several movies and of course the titular Duel Monsters card game. We were all wishing that our cards would turn into mind-blowing holograms as we did battle. You’re finished Yi-Gi!

#9: “Dragon Ball” series (North American Versions) (1986-97)

Also in:

Top 10 Greatest Dragon Ball References In Anime

In Japan the Dragon Ball series was super violent, with adult themes and plenty of swearing, but when it was brought over here it was throttled back a bit. There was still fighting and violence but only as much as they could get away with for a Saturday morning cartoon. However the changes are largely superficial and the great story and memorable characters still shine through, and true fans can always turn to the Toei Animation originals for the complete experience.

#8: “Monster Rancher” (1999-2001)

Also in:

Top 10 Man vs. Monster Anime Battles

Collecting and battling monsters was all the rage in the late 90s and Monster Rancher was about battley and collectey as you could get. In this anime, Genki is a gamer who wins a tournament and is given a special disc as a prize, but when he tries to play it he is transported into another world. Here he must find a legendary monster disc to help stop the evil known as Moo. This anime, based off it’s simulation games, came out around the time of anime tie-in toys and collectibles making it a hit with kids.

#7: “Princess Tutu” (2002-03)

Probably the least mainstream anime on our list, Princess Tutu is about a duckling who has fallen in love with a human boy. She is then transformed into a human girl by a deceased storyteller who uses the ducking to live out his unfinished fairy tale. Princess Tutu is a magical girl anime that instead replaces the evil monsters and battles with internal conflicts and ballet. Great storytelling and music make this fairy tale unique and more than meets the eye.

#6: “Samurai Pizza Cats” (1990-91)

Also in:

Top 10 Deadliest Anime Samurai

They’re stamping out crime and you know that ain’t bologna! This was the anime world’s equivalent to the Ninja Turtles. The mechanical city of Little Tokyo is inhabited by robotic anthropomorphic animals. Three samurai cats named Speedy, Polly and Guido are tasked with stopping the evil Prime Minister, Seymour “The Big” Cheese while maintaining their pizza business. Despite it’s goofy nature the Samurai Pizza Cats were a hit in many countries for it’s pop culture references as well as memorable characters and the pure insanity that this anime provided.

#5: “Sailor Moon” (1992-97)

Also in:

20 Most CENSORED Sailor Moon Moments

A group of teenage girls turning into planet themed superheroines. Sounds like something only your sister would be into, but Sailor Moon was a series that broke barriers. On the surface it comes off as being too silly and childish, but there were definitely some serious moments that made everyone go ‘wow’. Before this show most anime were either action oriented for boys and cutesy for girls, but Sailor Moon took both aspects and combined them for everyone to enjoy whether you admit it or not.

#4: “Cardcaptor Sakura” (1998-2000)

Not as prominent as our previous entry, Cardcaptor Sakura is a magical girl anime that is a bit more on the girly side but with humour that everyone can enjoy. Sakura is a ten-year old who accidentally unleashes a collection of magic cards known as Clow Cards which begin to wreak havoc on her town. She is tasked by the cards guardian Cerberus recapture the cards with the help of her best friend Tomoyo and love interest Syaoran. Even though it didn’t reach the heights as others of it’s time, it did gain a loyal following.

#3: “Naruto” (2002-07)

Also in:

Top 10 Naruto and Sasuke Team-Up Fights

Ninjas have always been cool, but when Naruto hit the airways these stealthy assassins were brought out of the shadows once and put into bright orange jumpsuits. These ninjas might not have been the most stealthy but we were immediately drawn to Naruto, Sakura and Sasuke as they fought enemies and even themselves to try and find their places in the world. It didn’t matter which village your favorite character belonged to, all we wanted were epic ninja battles. Believe it.

#2: “Digimon” (1999-) Starting off as a toy line of Digital Pets this cartoon came out around the time that merchandise and anime went hand in hand. In the different Digimon incarnations, different groups of kids get transported to the Digital World where they befriend creatures called Digimon. It is up to them to team up and save the Digital World from various evil threats. Although the later seasons might not have done as well the original, Digimon is still going strong today, but is overshadowed by another monster battle series… Before we unveil our most kid-friendly anime here are a few honorable mentions. “Medabots” (1999-2001) “Hamtaro” (2000-06) “Shaman King” (2001-02) “Hikaru no Go” (2001-2003)
