Trapped inside of a prison, Baki takes on the strongest man in the world, Mr Unchained himself, in a royal rumble that pushes him like never before. Just when you think it’s going to be a typical exchange of blows, along comes Olivia who…turns himself into a giant muscle ball? It’s batshit, but it’s the best kind of batshit! #9: Rengoku vs. Akaza “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Mugen Train” (2020) Animation isn’t everything, but when it’s pushed to eleven like this, one can’t help but give in to the hype. Taking on one of the strongest Demon Moons, Rengoku goes all out, utilising both his Flame Breathing Techniques as well as UFOtable’s Unlimited Budget Works. The music and visuals are on a whole other level, with Rengoku stealing the show with his refusal to buckle over and give in, even as his body is whittled away by Akaza’s endless assault. There’s no better example of what shonen battles can look like when given the cinematic treatment. #8: Vash vs. Knives “Trigun” (1998) A showdown between brothers, one that closed the curtain on Vash’s gunslinging journeys while also capping off what many consider a true gem of retro anime. Coming to grips with his plant origins as well as the decision to let go of his pacifistic mentality, Vash engages his sinister sibling in a shootout for the ages. We get to see what the 60 million double dollar man can really do with a gun, including the craziest game of impromptu Russian roulette we’ve ever seen. And that’s all before they start busting out the alien arm cannons! #7: Saitama vs. Boros “One Punch Man” (2015-19) While we had seen more than a few examples of Saitama’s unbeatable strength by this point, nothing could have prepared us for when he really let loose against the alien tyrant. With his restraints loosened, Boros provided more than an adequate challenge for the caped baldy, capable of not only kicking Saitama right into the moon, but also blasting apart a planet in one fell swoop. Not that it did him much good when he found himself thrashed by the singularly most epic punch of all time! As finales go, this is unmissable. #6: Gintoki vs. Takasugi “Gintama” (2006-18) Odd Jobs Gin has always walked the line when it comes to wild comedy and bloody action, and this is a perfect encapsulation of what the series can do when it goes all in on the latter. With the Shogun’s life in peril, Gintoki crosses blades with his former comrade, with the two of them proceeding to rip each other apart. Even when their weapons break, it doesn’t stop the White Demon or Black Beast from going all in to deliver that finishing blow. Subtlety was never their strong suit anyway. #5: Itadori & Todo vs. Hanami “Jujutsu Kaisen” (2020-21) You won’t find a more beautiful or kickass display of teamwork than these adorkable sorcerers banding together to beat the compost out of this demonic plant. When the elite curse starts to lay waste to everyone around them, it falls to the two-brand new best friendos to take it out. Between Todo’s use of Boogie Woogie and Idatori’s newfound mastery of Black Flash, they beat the sunflower seeds out of Hanami. If Gojo hadn’t leapt in to steal the win, they might have even had a chance at wiping it out for good! #4: Naruto vs. Sasuke “Naruto Shippuden” (2007-17) A rivalry over a decade in the making, and the culmination of their conflict did not disappoint. Reuniting at the Valley of the End, Naruto and Sasuke’s rematch not only far surpassed their original bout in terms of emotional resonance, but also in terms of sheer destruction. With their power scaling reaching outrageous levels, the two proceed to conjure jutsu beyond reckoning. Usually that would be enough to earn widespread recognition, but then they conclude things with an almost harrowing exchange of blows; something far more personal and strangely fitting. #3: Meruem vs. Netero “Hunter x Hunter” (2011-14) Who would have guessed a fight between an old man and a bug could be this epic? Confronting the seemingly unstoppable Chimera Ant King, the veteran Hunter pulls out all the stops to drag him under, including the summoning of a multi-armed Nen constructed specifically conjured to give out free hands! The speed, precision and escalating tension make it the franchise’s definitive battle. Interlaced with flashbacks to give Netero’s character greater grandeur, this confrontation between two masters is the most thrilling chess match you’re likely to witness! #2: Gogeta vs. Broly “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” (2018) Possibly the greatest reintroduction of two classic characters in all of Dragon Ball history, the final battle gave fans the most expensive nostalgia bomb ever as Goku and Vegeta, putting aside their differences, fuse together into a warrior capable of taking on the almighty rampage that is Broly. Devastating everything around them, the two pull off a spellbinding show of force worthy of two of the most powerful Saiyans to ever exist, not only raising the bar both within the series but for anime flicks everywhere. #1: Spike vs. Vincent “Cowboy Bebop: The Movie” (2001) No powers, no weapons, just two skilled, damaged strangers throwing down with nothing but their fists and wits. Arriving in the nick of time before Vincent unleashes his Halloween death plot, the galaxy’s slickest bounty hunter takes on the warped yet equally skilled terrorist in a beautifully choreographed brawl that pushes both to their limits. Vincent may have held his own, but no amount of imaginary butterflies were going to be able to save him from the savagery of Spike’s signature kicks.
