Superhero Origins: Nick Fury

One of the best strategists of the Marvel Universe, Nick Fury is a born leader. Welcome to Watchmojo.com, and today we will explore how the World War II soldier became the director of SHIELD.
As with most comic book characters, there are often re-imaginations and different versions to a character’s past. We have chosen to primarily follow the storyline, which unfolded in the original “Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos” comics (1963), and was expanded on in The Fantastic Four #21 (1963) and Strange Tales #135 (1965).
Born sometime during the great depression of the 1920s, Nicolas Joseph Fury grew up in Hell’s Kitchen. His father had been a pilot for the United Kingdom’s Royal Flying Corps during the First World War, and his mother died when he was very young.
Craving adventure, Fury left the neighborhood with his best friend Red Hargrove to set up a daring wing walking and parachuting act. Eventually training British Commandos, they caught the eye of Lieutenant Samuel “Happy Sam” Sawyer, who convinced the duo to enlist in the army.
Stationed together in Oahu, Hawaii, Hargrove was killed in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor; causing Fury to swear vengeance against both the Japanese and the Nazi forces.
Sergeant Fury was given command of the United States Army’s intelligence’s first-strike ranger squad, which was renamed “The Howling Commandos.”
Fighting alongside the likes of Captain America and Bucky in the Second World War, he battled Axes villains, such as Red Skull and Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker. A grenade blast would lead to the slow deterioration of the vision in his left eye.
This necessitated him getting injected with “The Infinity Formula” by Professor Berthold Sternberg in France. Not only saving his life, the formula dramatically slowed his aging, causing him to see many of his friends age and die.
Following the war, Nick Fury was recruited to the OSS and the CIA, where he worked his way up to the rank of Colonel. This led him to be appointed to SHIELD, an international agency equipped with state-of-the-art technology by Tony Stark.
After several security breaches, he took it upon himself to rebuild the large agency into a much more streamlined and secretive unit, that he could both personally oversee and protect from corruption. It was at this time that he independently enlisted the services of superheroes, beginning with Captain America, Spider-Man, Luke Cage, Wolverine, Daredevil and Black Widow.
In the Marvel Ultimate Universe, the character was re-imagined as an African American, with his look and personality based on actor Samuel L. Jackson. Leading the Avengers initiative, a re-imagined compilation of superheroes, this version of the character was later portrayed by the actor in the Iron Man films and The Avengers.
