Newfoundland and Labrador: Nature and Wildlife
Natural Landscape
With its miles of coastline, mountain ranges, lakes, rivers, forests and Arctic tundra, Newfoundland and Labrador has a diverse and spectacular natural landscape. One of the province's more unique features is the icebergs found nearby, which you can see up close by booking a boat tour. Even more spectacular are the extended beaches off of Labrador's coast: some believe these beaches make up the Wonderstrands coastline cited in the Norse Saga of Erik the Red.
Animals
This varied geography makes the province the perfect breeding ground and habitat for many animal species.
Fishing
Since the province is bordered by water, you're sure to find plenty of fish in the sea and that's why fishing is such a valued industry. For instance, Battle Harbour was once the center of Labrador's salt fish sector and is now a National Historic site and summer fishing station. Meanwhile, the fishing village of Red Bay used to be a Basque whaling station.
Marine Mammals and Sea Birds
Because the Atlantic Ocean is home to over twenty species of whales and marine mammals, whale-watching is one of the region's most popular attractions. Try hopping on a boat tour or excursion to see these majestic animals in their natural habitat. From there, you're sure to also spot numerous seabirds soaring the skies or searching for food, as over thirty million of them live in the area. And be sure to look out for the brightly colored beaks of the puffin!
Wildlife in National Parks
The province has several parks where you can enjoy beautiful scenery and get a glimpse of some Canadian wildlife. Black bears, caribou herds and thousands of moose live in Newfoundland's Gros Morne National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. You'll also find caribou and moose in Labrador's Torngat Mountains National Park. Set against the backdrop of the Torngat Mountains, you'll find Inukshuk stone structures as well as some of the world's oldest rocks in this park.
Dog Sledding
In the winter, you can get acquainted with traditional Inuit sled dogs, or Labrador Huskies, for some
dog sledding. Be aware that polar bears have been spotted in Labrador on occasion!
