Lucas the Spider - Top 3 Facts!

Lucas the Spider - Top 3 Facts!
VOICE OVER: EB WRITTEN BY: Spencer Sher
Script written by Spencer Sher

Not all spiders are cute… in fact most aren't but maybe after seeing this video of Lucas the Spider that went viral, you might come to like them! For this list we're breaking down the 3 facts you didn't know about this cute little guy!

#3: The Videos Have Racked Up Millions of Views and People Are Demanding a Movie

Meet Lucas. He’s a tiny, fuzzy, fun-loving animated spider who is so damn cute that you just forgot you’re looking at a spider! Multiple short, original videos (animation tests, really) starring the spunky little arachnid have been released; and boy, are they ever the talk of the Internet. Lucas’ antics have earned him a ton of views; and by a ton, we mean over 25 million . . . and counting! He’s become a YouTube sensation; and unsurprisingly people are already campaigning for a full-length Lucas feature film! The power of the Internet being what it is, we think this is a totally real – and exciting - possibility!

#2: He’s a Jumping Spider, Which Actually Makes Him Pretty Smart

It’s time for a little arachnid 101. Based on his eyes and body, it’s clear that the jumping spider (the Salticidae family, for you Latin speakers) inspired Lucas’ look; and it just so happens that these are some of the craftiest spiders on the planet. Their big, beautiful eyes (which are almost as cute, and acute, as a cat’s) have the ability to distinguish a variety of colors, which comes in handy while hunting. Yes, you heard that correctly. Jumping spiders don’t really spin a web to catch their prey: they hunt. In fact, they’re so smart they’ve been known to play dead in the webs of other spiders only to attack and eat them when they come too close! How delightfully gross is that?

#1: One Person Did All the 3D Design, Modeling, Rigging, Animation, Lighting, and Rendering

The man behind the creation of Lucas the Spider is Joshua Slice. (Wow, awesome name alert!) He’s an animator and visual effects artist who’s worked on “Epic”, “Big Hero 6” and “Zootopia”. He’s also responsible for doing almost literally everything when it came to bringing Lucas to life, from the animation to the lighting. It was actually Slice’s own nephew who provided the voice for little Lucas. And guess what? His name is Lucas, too! With many already clamoring for a film, Joshua Slice and his nephew may soon find themselves in a web of Lucas the Spider hysteria. Yeah, we totally went there.
