10 Games to Play If You Love Tomb Raider

Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we’re taking a look at 10 games you should play if you’re a fan of “Tomb Raider!”

“Uncharted” series (2007-)

By now, we’ve all heard about how “Uncharted” is just “Dude Raider” but with a better story. Thing is that these games are more than that. The “Uncharted” games do feature a lot of climbing and temple raiding, but where it truly shines is in the level design. No two combat encounters ever feel the same. You’re forced to adapt on the fly and reposition yourself to constantly keep the pressure on the enemy. As for the story, you have an overarching plot where Nathan Drake tries to unravel the mysteries behind the voyages of his ancestor, Sir Francis Drake. If you haven’t already, you should absolutely go and grab the “Nathan Drake Collection” and start with the first game, “Drake’s Fortune.”

“Horizon” series (2017-)

On the surface, the “Horizon” games seem like the opposite of “Tomb Raider.” What do robot dinosaurs have in common with Lara Croft’s adventures? Well, she and Aloy do offer similar experiences. Aloy’s world offers a ton of areas to climb and swing off of grappling hooks. You are also given a number of ways to learn more about the world through uncovering artifacts, exploring underground ruins, and more. On top of all that, there’s an incredibly satisfying combat system that will keep you wanting to jump back in.

“Prince of Persia” series (1989-)

We promise that running and climbing aren’t going to be our only reasons for recommending these games. If you simply love traversing across ancient ruins, palaces, and the like, the “Prince of Persia” games will scratch that itch. In addition to stories shrouded in mystery and myth, the “Prince of Persia” games do an excellent job at making platforming and combat feel equally satisfying. Whether you want to play the 2D classics or the more widely reputable 3D games like “Sands of Time,” “Tomb Raider” fans will find plenty to love with this franchise.

“Call of the Sea” (2020)

While it is much more linear and less heavy on the action than “Tomb Raider” is, we’re recommending “Call of the Sea” for its mystery and puzzles. It has been some time since Norah’s husband left for his expedition, and now, you must travel across the island to figure out what happened to him and his team. Many of the game’s puzzles are clever in how they force you to really observe your surroundings and decipher symbols, evoking that same sense of adventure Lara Croft has. Just don’t anticipate gunfights or giant dinosaurs to pop out of nowhere.

“Sea of Thieves” (2018)

We know that a pirate game doesn’t exactly give off the same vibes Lara Croft does, but you are raiding temples here. Literally. “Sea of Thieves” allows you and three friends to sail the seas in search of treasure. You can take on ghostly fortresses for an assortment of loot or simply go on a hunt for buried treasure. But if you want ancient ruins with enigmatic puzzles to solve, well, there is a wealth of underwater temples to explore. Will you find one littered in traps or will you find one where you’ll be ambushed by Sirens? You won’t know unless you board the ship, matey.

“Strange Brigade” (2018)

If pirates aren’t your thing and you want something closer to “Tomb Raider’s” aesthetics, then “Strange Brigade” is your best option. As different explorers, you and three friends can take on a variety of missions where you venture through mystical locations that feature branching paths. The treasures you encounter can be something as simple as a brand new weapon to take down giant scorpions or mummies with or an artifact that buffs your stats. You can even use traps against enemies to manage hordes more easily and save on ammo. And to think this came from Rebellion Developments, the same studio behind “Evil Genius” and “Sniper Elite!”

“Enslaved: Odyssey to the West” (2010)

Now, not all of us like escort missions, but if you want a game with the same level of challenge in its platforming like “Tomb Raider,” “Enslaved” is worth a try. With a companion named Tripitaka by your side, you must climb and jump across various structures so the two of you can escape a hostile world. There is some combat to mix things up, but most of the fun comes from navigating the environments alongside Trip. Well, that and the thrilling adventure thrown together by Ninja Theory.

“Deadfall Adventures” (2013)

If all you want is a shooter with the same atmosphere of finding relics and fighting supernatural creatures from another era, “Deadfall Adventures” is right up your alley. As James Lee Quatermain, you will journey across the Arctic, Egypt, and Mayan ruins to retrieve a wealth of treasures before the Soviets and Nazis can get their hands on them. Just a fair warning - the writing and voice acting can come off hokey at times. Even so, “Deadfall Adventures” can be a fun romp for some with simple puzzles and enjoyable combat.

“Assassin’s Creed” series (2007-)

Much like “Prince of Persia,” the “Assassin’s Creed” games also feature ancient ruins and missions where you try to recover mystical artifacts. But if you loved the controls of “Tomb Raider: Anniversary” or the more stealth-focused “Shadow of the Tomb Raider,” you’ll feel right at home here. “Assassin’s Creed” might require some time for you to fully grasp the parkour mechanics, but once you get a handle on them, running across rooftops is incredibly fun! As for the stealth, every mission is a challenge in how you must sneak into enemy territory and neutralize your targets without anyone noticing. Our advice? Start with “AC2”; Ezio’s story from that to “Brotherhood” and “Revelations” is the best in the series.

“Phantom Abyss” (2024)

Considering all of the tomb raiding and temple running games have had us do, it’s astounding how we haven’t had a game centered on ruins and temples that are loaded with boobytraps. That is where “Phantom Abyss” comes in. To free yourself from the temple, you will have to run through several gauntlets to claim mystical artifacts. Along the way, you will acquire new whips to grant additional abilities or even grand additional abilities. You will get to experience all of this alongside other players, or “Phantoms.” Use their deaths to regain health or follow their paths to find out how to overcome obstacles and find the path forward. Or simply try to be the first one out!
