Having stood in for the imaginary lands of J.R.R. Tolkien, the areas in and around Nelson, New Zealand are awe-inspiring. The area lies near the center of the country, and is a great attraction for movie fans and nature-lovers alike.
Mount Maunganui is both the name of a dormant volcano, and a town found in New Zealand. The peak of the volcano, also known as Mauao, reaches over 760 feet high, and from that point sweeping views are accessible. Vistas of ocean, harbor and beach can be found from the summit, as well as a geothermal spring at the base of the mountain.
Nugget Point, complete with lighthouse, is a unique formation along the Otago coast. A configuration of rocky “nuggets” lays in the water, while the lighthouse provides visitors with views of scenic beauty and frolicking seals and sea lions.
From Cape Reinga, visitors can see where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean meet. This cape is significant to the native Maori people, and is also home to an iconic and popular lighthouse.
The Huka Falls allow you to view firsthand the enormous power of water. Located along New Zealand’s longest river, the Waikato, the volume of water flowing through the Falls comes close to 60 thousand gallons per second.
