Bundle up! We're diving into the most frigid battles across Hyrule as we explore the chilliest encounters from The Legend of Zelda series. From ancient ice palaces to frozen peaks, these frosty foes have tested Link's resolve with their freezing attacks and slippery arenas. Our countdown features iconic battles against Blizzeta in Snowpeak Ruins, the mighty Frost Gleeok in Tears of the Kingdom, and the classic Kholdstare from A Link to the Past. Which frozen fight gave you the coldest reception? Let us know in the comments!

The Ice Palace in “A Link to the Past” is one of the most frustrating dungeons in the series, thanks to some perplexing puzzles and many rooms being frozen over, making them hard to navigate. Thankfully, the boss, Kholdstare, isn’t too big a threat, but it still more than fits the bill for our list. The boss is encased in solid ice when Link enters the arena, which Link must break apart with either the Fire Rod or Bombos Medallion, while dodging shards of ice that fall from the ceiling. He’ll have to continue to dodge those after he breaks Kholdstare free, who splits into three and tries to ram Link to death. Simple, yes, but can be deadly if you aren’t good at dodging.

Frostare “The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures” (2004)

At the end of the Tower of Winds, the group of Links face off against what appears to be a giant eyeball, covered in shards of ice. It will use these shards, as well as miniature versions of itself, to block all attacks, until you can make it to the room where its true form waits. After giving the little red lizard a few stabs, Frostare will fall from the ceiling and begin flying around the arena, using the ice shards as wings. From there, it isn’t hard to figure out what to do; wail on the eye as much as you can while avoiding the ice attacks that freeze Link if they make contact.

The final boss we’ll talk about in the ‘Stare’ family, Dharkstare appears as the boss of the Ice Ruins in “A Link Between Worlds.” It encases itself in ice like Kholdstare, but doesn’t just sit idol waiting for you to attack it. It will float above the arena, trying to smash into Link while also shooting forth ice orbs. These connect to form a triangle, which will freeze and damage Link if he’s on the inside. A few blasts from the Fire Rod will get rid of the boss’ defenses, after which it will hop around the arena trying to avoid taking actual hits. As the fight goes on, Dharkstare moves faster and uses more ice orbs. It’s a fun fight so long as you can avoid being frozen, which is a bit trickier considering the slippery ice floor.

Wizzrobe “The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask” (2000)

There aren’t nearly as many solely ice-based bosses in “Zelda” as there are fire ones. And so, we’ve got to look at a few mini-bosses. Wizzrobes are commonly occurring enemies in many installments, but more powerful ones appear in “Majora’s Mask.” In Snowhead Temple, whose boss actually isn’t an ice-based one, Link will face two Wizzrobes: one that guards the Fire Arrows and one that guards the Boss Key. These will teleport around the arena between specific spots. And if you don’t attack them at the proper moment, they’ll fire off an ice blast that freezes Link solid. This is easy in their first phase, but a bit trickier in the second, when they create copies of themselves.

Frost Talus “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” (2017)

“Breath of the Wild” introduced Stone Taluses, big amalgamations of boulders that can yield some enticing treasure upon defeat. There are also elemental versions, and Frost Taluses are naturally harder to deal with than their more common counterparts. These overworld mini-bosses are a breeze once you’ve made it far enough into the game. But at first, they can be tricky. Contact freezes Link immediately unless you have upgraded armor that negates it. You can get rid of its icy shell with fire attacks so that you can climb it to hit its weak point, but it’s not as if the Talus will just let that happen. You’ll have to dodge icy boulders, while playing offensively to gain the upper hand.

Freezlord “The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes” (2015)

Another ice-based mini-boss comes in the Snowball Ravine of “Tri Force Heroes.” Freezlord is essentially one massive, mean looking ice sculpture. During the first phase, it will spin rapidly and invulnerably, before stopping to spray ice breath at its would-be victims. Naturally, you can hurt it with fire during its attack. During the second phase, it’ll hop around the arena, trying to crush each Link while also propelling itself around with its ice breath. The more damage it takes, the smaller it gets but the faster it moves. Freezlord isn’t a huge hassle, but it does create some notably frantic energy as its health winds down.

Blizzagia “The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes” (2015)

The final section of the Ice Cavern in “Tri Force Heroes” is the Ice Temple, at the end of which lies Blizzagia, a giant serpent. It will lunge out of one of several caves in the arena, taking bites out of each Link. If it misses, you can counter by hitting its mask with the hammer. But enough hits will only make it angrier for the second phase. Blizzagia will then cover the ground in ice, making your traction slippery. It then slides around the arena, snapping at you and flicking its tail around, which can freeze you on contact. Attacks to its body will slow it down so you can finally break the mask and unveil the boss’ weak spot. But, as you might expect, Blizzagia moves faster and more viciously the more damage it takes.

Colgera “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” (2023)

The boss of the Wind Temple may not be all that hard, but it’s still more fun than most others in the game. Colgera has turned the already frigid Hebra region into a bitter tundra. And aboard the Stormwind Ark, Link and Tulin are at the mercy of its blusterous winds. This means floating and gliding above the ship while Colgera uses portals to try and rip through Link. When not doing that, it shoots ice shards upwards and produces massive tornadoes. In order to defeat it, Link must either shoot through the weak points, revealed after Colgera has dispersed enough ice shards from its back, or skydive through them. It’s an incredibly fun fight, matched by its ridiculously good music.

Blizzeta “The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess” (2006)

Once Yeta the Yeti becomes possessed by the Twilight Mirror shard in the Snowpeak Ruins, she surrounds herself with ice and becomes the Twilit Ice Mass, Blizzeta. During the first phase, she’ll slide around the arena, now covered in ice to make Link’s movement harder, trying to ram into you. You must use the Ball and Chain to knock her away while simultaneously chipping away at her armor. During the second phase, she’ll rise high above, dropping giant ice spikes down on him in order to either deal damage, or trap him so that she can crush him herself. It’s another fight that isn’t too difficult, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a lot of fun.

Frost Gleeok “The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom” (2023)

Just like the other Gleeoks, these frosty variants can spell doom for most players who approach them earlier than necessary in “Tears of the Kingdom.” Even getting near them is troublesome; the very air around them is so cold, Link will take damage unless he has the proper armor or meals. Similarly, the icy beams it emits from each of its three heads will completely freeze him, unless that armor has been upgraded. You fight it the same way as the others, hitting each eye with arrows to bring it down and damage it with melee attacks. Once its health gets low enough, it will fly out of reach, raining down giant ice spikes. While using Recall on one, and avoiding the others coming down, Link can get within range to shoot it some more and bring the monster down. Did we leave off one of your favorite ice-based bosses?
