Christopher Nolan, The Visionary Behind The Dark Knight and Inception

He quickly defined himself as a visionary, and has created the gold standard for dark and non-chronological subject matter. Welcome to WatchMojo.com and today we’re taking a look at the career of director Christopher Nolan.

Born on July 30th, 1970 In London England; he spent his childhood travelling to and from Chicago. At only the age of seven he developed a deep interest in film. Which was spurred by his use of his father’s Super 8 film camera.

Later, he studied literature at University College London. At the same time he devoted his free time to shooting several short films for the school’s film society.

His early short films, such as “Doodle Bug”, gained him recognition before he was able to take on his first feature “Following” in 1996. Centered on an obsessive writer following random people, the non-chronological narrative was designed to disorient its viewers. Audiences were then forced to piece together the film together all by themselves. Fortunately, its unusual structure was well received.

As a result, the script for Nolan’s next film project “Momento” found funding. Building on the impressive editing style of his previous effort, the tale of a man without short term memory astonished critics and was nominated for both a Golden Globe and Oscar for best screenplay. As a result, it not only propelled his career, but began a long collaborative writing bond with his brother.

In 2002 the director helmed the highly praised remake of the film “Insomnia.” Starring Al Pacino, the film re-told the tale of a detective who is unable to sleep because of the never-ending daylight of the sunny season in Alaska.

Two years later, Nolan’s ambition of directing a blockbuster led him to convince Warner Bros to entrust him to revive the once reputable Batman film franchise. As a result of its dark and intelligent storyline, “Batman Begins” triumphed at the box office. Not only sweeping numerous awards, it forged a strong relationship with actors Christian Bale and Michael Caine.

As a result, he quickly reunited with the stars for his 2006 film adaptation of the novel “The Prestige.” Sweeping the box office with the tale of rival magicians, he then announced his intent to return to the Batman franchise.

And in 2008 defied expectations by releasing “The Dark Knight”, which has been arguably hailed as the greatest superhero movie ever made. Breaking numerous box-office records, it further brought him a nomination for best director by the directors guild of America.

After its stellar success, Warner Bros quickly green lit Nolan’s screenplay for a contemporary sci-fi action flick set within the mind called “Inception.”

Before the film’s release he was already confirmed to be returning for yet another Batman entry, and was announced as the producer of the Superman film revival in 2012.
