Get your splashguards ready, because these entries feature carnage a-plenty! Raiden Destroys The Earth Out of Boredom “Mortal Kombat” (1992) No really this actually happened. Before he was the wise and protective mentor as depicted in later titles, in Mortal Kombat 1 he was kind of a dick. In his ending, he saw Shang Tsung and Goro as inferior to him, and got bored with killing all the other mortals, so what does he do? Invite all the other gods into Mortal Kombat, and have their yearlong battle results in the whole planet being wiped out in their tournament. … Whoops! … quick hit the retcon button. Johnny Cage Dies “Mortal Kombat Trilogy” (1999) Johnny Cage was an instant favorite for many Kombatants in the first two “Mortal Kombat” games; so, his absence from the third game came as somewhat of a shock to gamers, many of whom were not pleased by the movie star’s absence. By the time “Mortal Kombat Trilogy” rolled around, however, Cage returned, and we what happened! According to his bio in MK Trilogy The Outworld Extermination Squad bumped off Mr. Cage, but his soul was blocked from the afterlife and eventually returned to his body to once again fight alongside his buddies Liu Kang and Sonya Blade. In the Reboot, Cage survives the subsequent retelling of these events, however it’s Liu Kang that ends up killed in his place, By Raiden of all people. Liu Kang Wins… A Lot! “Mortal Kombat 1 – 4” (1992 – 1997) When you’re the face that runs the place, like Liu Kang was in the early days of “Mortal Kombat,” you’re expected to win a lot of fights; but, Liu Kang damn well dominated the MK tournament scene right through the first four games, leaving his rivals in his dust. On his way to back... to back… to back… to back victories, Kang defeated such warriors as the hulking mass Goro, the shape shifter Shang Tsung, the monstrous Kintaro, the evil emperor Shao Kahn, and devilish Shinnok –not bad for a one dude in track pants and a rocking headband! Kitana’s Replacement “Mortal Kombat II” (1993) It couldn’t have been easy for Kitana to be the adopted daughter of a man like Shao Kahn, being forced to do his evil bidding all the while aspiring to be on the side of Good. Family troubles, are we right?! Well, Kahn does get the daughter he always wanted eventually, the only trouble is it wasn’t Kitana, because Shang Tsung created a tarkatan clone of Kitana in Mileena – an (almost) exact twin. In the original timeline Mileena betrayed Shao Kahn and took the rule of Outworld for herself, though in the rebooted timeline, she’s loyal to Kahn and after his death intends to retake Outworld for herself. Either way, she lives up to her title of an evil princess. Noob Saibot’s Identity Revealed “Mortal Kombat Deception” (2004) First introduced in “Mortal Kombat 2”, Noob Saibot was a hidden character with little known about him, yet made his presence known in subsequent sequels. It wasn’t until “Mortal Kombat Deception” during his team up with Smoke that we finally learn who he is: The original Sub-Zero that was killed by Scorpion and the current Sub-Zero’s older brother. In the rebooted timeline, this revelation comes much sooner and we learn that it was Quan Chi who revived him. Noob fought alongside the forces of Outworld and returned to confront his younger brother – the current Sub Zero, Kuai Liang – telling him he’s not worthy of the name “Sub Zero”. The two men square off and, unfortunately for Bi Han, he’s defeated once again. Man, this guy just can’t catch a break! Shinnok Returns “Mortal Kombat 4” & “Mortal Kombat X” (1997, 2015) Thousands of years before the events of Mortal Kombat, Raiden and Shinnok were locked in a brutal conflict that ended when Raiden was able to seal Shinnok away in the Netherrealm. In both timelines; Quan frees Shinnok from the Netherrealm, only to be sealed away again, originally by Liu Kang as mentioned before, and by Johnny Cage in the reboot. But he doesn’t stay sealed for long in the reboot timeline. Before Quan Chi is killed by Scorpion he was able to release Shinnok from the amulet prison and all Hell broke loose! Not only was Shinnok as powerful as before, but he also had the aid of the undead versions of deadly warriors such as Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Kitana and Sindel, all of whom were revived by Quan Chi prior. Thankfully Cassie Cage eventually brought him down this time, Until Raiden let him out again, … well part of him. The New Rulers of the Neatherrealm “Mortal Kombat X” (2015) Why did Raiden bring back Shinnok’s head? Well when Shinnok escaped the second time, he poisoned Earhrealms lifeforce: The Jinsei. So in order to cleanse it; he put himself in the chamber and took the corruption with him. Not only did this create a corrupted Raiden, but he had also appointed two popular undead heroes as the Neatherrealm’s new rulers: Liu Kang & Kitana, it’s clear that these two won’t follow their original timeline’s counterparts anymore. Let Mortal Kombat 11 … Begin! Onaga’s Deception “Mortal Kombat: Deception” (2004) You really have to feel bad for Shujinko. All he wanted to do was fight alongside the Forces of Good to make the world a better place. Shujinko’s quest, which he started as a teenager, was to deliver the six Komidogu to the Elder Gods at the request of the spirit Damashi, and he doesn’t finish this quest until he’s an old man. However it turns out that Damashi was Onaga all along, and instead used the Komidogu to return to his true form. Oopsie!! But, being the kind of guy Shujinko is, he didn’t give up after empowering Onaga; Shujinko strived to right his wrong and defeat Onaga in Mortal Kombat. Onaga has yet to appear in the rebooted timeline, will that be set to change soon? Raiden’s Warning “Mortal Kombat” (2011) After the events of “Mortal Kombat: Armageddon” the storyline had sprawled out to such confusing extremes that a miracle had to happen to get the series’ story back on track; and, that miracle came in the form of MK creator Ed Boon deciding to reboot the series. So, with only Raiden and Shao Kahn left alive – and The Lightning God close to death – Raiden sent a message back to his younger self to change the course of history, so he wouldn’t end up in this hopeless situation again. (“He Must Win”) What this meant for us “Mortal Kombat” fans was that 2011’s MK Reboot was a streamlined retelling of the first three “Mortal Kombat” games, setting up a much more coherent storyline moving forward with “MK X.” So, it’s a major win in the end not only for gamers but for the series itself. Scorpion and Sub Zero Unite “Mortal Kombat X” (2015) For those long-time “Mortal Kombat” fans out there, the idea of Sub Zero and Scorpion uniting and fighting against the Forces of Evil was something unthinkable for a long, long time. While this originally happened in a rather anticlimactic fashion in “Mortal Kombat 4”, the retelling in “Mortal Kombat X” was glorious! When Sub Zero and Scorpion learned that their whole history, feud and hatred, was based on the lies and cunning of evil sorcerer Quan Chi, they decided to drop their long feud and concentrate on their common enemy instead. The reboot allows for something unheard of in the world of Mortal Kombat; Peace achieved through Diplomacy. Liu Kang Dies “Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance” (2002) As mentioned earlier in this list, Liu Kang was accidentally killed by Raiden when the two legends lock horns after a disagreement in the rebooted storyline. This wasn’t how things played out in the original storyline, however, where Liu’s death shockingly happened during the opening of “Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance.” With Shang Tsung and Quan Chi joining forces, their first two targets were Shao Kahn and Liu Kang. And, to fan’s shock, this evil duo succeed in killing what were undoubtedly the most hated and the most beloved characters in MK History at that point – before the game even started! It was a bold way of entering the new generation of “Mortal Kombat” games back in 2002, but it’s one whose payoff ultimately worked as the franchise got a breath of fresh air after limping out of the 90s.
