Ready for an epic solo adventure? Join us as we explore the most impressive standalone gaming experiences of the year! From medieval battlegrounds to mysterious mansions, these titles offer unforgettable journeys for those who prefer to game alone. Which one caught your attention? Our selection includes the artistic "The Midnight Walk," the brutal "The First Berserker: Khazan," the innovative "Monster Hunter Wilds," and the haunting "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33." Each game brings something unique to the table, whether it's stunning visuals, challenging gameplay, or compelling narratives.

Assassins Creed Shadows (2025)

If youre not sold on the direction that Assassins Creed has been moving in, Shadows isnt likely to change your mind. But if youre a fan, and looking for historical fiction set in feudal Japan where you can play as both a samurai and a ninja, theres a lot to enjoy here. Yasuke and Naoe bring different playstyles, so you can choose to solve a situation with brute force or careful planning. Different missions are better suited for each playstyle, so theres a nice back and forth without feeling like youre forced to play as one when you prefer the other. Their characterization is also great, even if the overall story sometimes feels like it isnt doing them justice.

The Midnight Walk (2025)

So far, it seems like not many players checked out The Midnight Walk, which is a genuine shame. In this dreary adventure, you escort the adorable Potboy through a world enshrouded by darkness, housing monsters that seek to devour the fire at his core, which is clearly in short supply. While an escort mission lasting an entire game might not sound fun, theres plenty of intrigue here. Admittedly, the gameplay isnt that deep and you can beat the game in less than 10 hours. But it really shines in its themes, characters, and its incredible art style. The game was developed entirely using stop-motion claymation. And there isnt a single minute that isnt stunning.

Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii (2025)

The Like a Dragon series is one that never really misses, even if some entries are stronger than others. Set six months after Infinite Wealth, this years installment follows Goro Majima after he loses his memories, but begins pirating around Hawaii in search of treasure. If that image sounds delightfully whacky to you, youre in luck, because it absolutely is. The game blends the franchises signature style and humor with a new hook of naval warfare, allowing players to customize their own ship and recruit crewmen as they progress through the story. Also true to the series history, there is an absurd amount of side content here, making for a fulfilling package.

The First Berserker: Khazan (2025)

If youre not yet sick of Soulslikes, then The First Berserker should definitely be on your radar. It is absolutely brutal, and we mean that in both a sense that its violent and that it will wholeheartedly kick your ass. You play as Khazan, a general who was framed for treason, tortured, and nearly killed. But by partnering with a strange, vicious spirit, he gains new abilities to unleash on foes in his search for vengeance. While undeniably tough, its understandably satisfying to overcome every combat encounter. Thats not to mention a striking visual style and just enough new features to make it stand on its own in a crowded sub-genre.

Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist (2025)

Likewise, if youre not yet sick of Metroidvanias, then you should know that Ender Magnolia is the best one to release in 2025 thus far. Though its a sequel to 2021s Ender Lillies, this game follows new protagonist Lilac, who sets out to save her kingdom from the Homunculi, which once served humans but have recently grown violent. The game features a similar addictive hook of other Metroidvanias; exploring every corner and gaining new abilities to unlock new paths. However, combat stands out as Lilac cleanses Homunculi and then summons them in battle. Due to this, theres a decent amount of variety in any given fight. Its a general improvement on its predecessor and should entice any fan of action platformers.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II (2025)

With its major emphasis on medieval realism, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II isnt for those looking for an easy experience. However, if youre willing to spend the time it requires of you, youll find a deep and immensely rewarding experience. It continues the story of Henry from the first game, a soldier fighting to overthrow a usurper king. Its one of the most immersive open world games weve seen in a while, which is saying something considering it seems every other game goes open world these days. More than that, its as close as you can get to a medieval simulation. It might not be for everyone, but its undoubtedly made with a lot of care, love, and knowledge of the time.

Blue Prince (2025)

There are certain itches that only a great puzzle game can scratch. And Blue Prince is, without a doubt, a great puzzle game. After your great uncle leaves you a mansion, youre tasked with navigating it in search of its secretive 46th room. Only, just about every room you come across has a puzzle you must solve to progress. Some puzzles even connect to those in other rooms. But theres also a roguelike twist. Each room takes one of your steps, which you only have 50 of without eating or finding a bed to gain more, and you get a group of blueprints to choose from for what comes next after you complete each room. Highly engaging and plenty challenging, Blue Prince is a puzzle players dream.

Monster Hunter Wilds (2025)

Yes, we know you can play Monster Hunter Wilds with other players, but it wouldnt feel right leaving it off the list. Plus, going it alone is a tremendous experience thats deserving of attention. Capcom took a formula that was already working well and added some wonderful new features. Its still just as satisfying as ever to track down a massive beast and test your combative prowess against it. But now, you get even more tools, like the ability to stash a second weapon on your mount or the Focus Mode, which highlights weak points and injuries on your prey. Thats not to mention a few quality of life improvements, like a better map and the inclusion of flares to call for back-up should you need it.

Doom: The Dark Ages (2025)

Doom will always be one of the best single player games in any given year it releases. And The Dark Ages continues that tradition. The prequel pits the Doom Slayer against the forces of Hell in fantastical medieval times. While combat isnt quite as fast as previous entries, theres still a major focus on ripping and tearing through enemies. The Slayers sawblade shield is an incredible addition, giving you a defensive twist while remaining an incredibly violent weapon. While you still get ranged weaponry, theres also a variety of melee weapons so you can get up close and personal. But no matter what youre using, youll revel in the bloodshed. Nothing quite fits the power trip fantasy like Doom.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (2025)

From the moment we began our journeys in Clair Obscur, it became obvious that it was a special type of game that rarely comes around. A powerful entity known as the Paintress holds the world in fear by counting down once a year, with each person of that age disappearing. The expedition you lead to stop her is one of beauty, heartbreak, and most of all, hope. The characters are phenomenally written and performed, the worldbuilding and art direction are breathtakingly strange, and the music is simply beautiful. Then, theres the addictive combat hook. Multiple layers give the turn-based fights more depth, like parrying or dodging enemy attacks, quick-time reactions to make your attacks stronger, and balancing different weapons, Pictos, and abilities to be as beneficial as they can be. Everything about this game is truly remarkable.
