Recently released from prison, a man by the name of Kyoshi soon finds himself as the apprentice of a respected rakugo performer. Finding himself drawn to the thrill of entertaining audiences via exhaustingly long comical stories, he strives to better his skills as a storyteller, all the while the anime gives us glimpses into the contrasting and pained lives of its cast.

With clever twists and unrelenting suspense, anime has never had deadlier game of cat and mouse.
#7: “Ping Pong the Animation” (2014)
Following the trials of two childhood friends, the outrageous Peco and the introverted Smile, who, despite their contrasting natures, both seek to become the best in table tennis. Aside from having everything you’d love in a sports anime, the art design in the series literally comes off the page, creating a unique experience that will win you over with its charm in no time. Needless to say, this one’s a smash hit.
#6: “The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya” (2010)

If you were a fan of the original reality-bending misadventures of the SOS Brigade but somehow have not come across this little gem, then we highly recommend you check it out. Not only does it have all the parallel dimensions, time travel and general hysteria you could want from Ms Suzumiya and company, but it also has an overwhelming amount of heart, especially in the form of Kyon, who for all his sarcasm has come to value the zany but deep-rooted affections of his friends. It’ll make you scratch your head, laugh out loud but most of all it will hit you right in your feelings.
#5: “Mononoke” (2007)
First things first, this series is visually gorgeous. Though don’t get too comfortable since it will also creep you out to no end. Leading us across the horror show is the nameless Medicine Seller, the only one capable of exorcising the titular monstrous spirits known as Mononoke. It’s brimming with exquisite visuals, and disturbing stories, and though it’s sometimes formulaic, it’s quite easy to enjoy watching the routine of the Medicine Seller unravelling the mystery behind each evil entity before letting loose that sword of his.
#4: “Puella Magi Madoka Magica” (2011)
It’s no secret that the magical girl genre has gotten more than a little saturated, but that’s what makes the harrowing exploits of Madoka a must-watch. Offered the chance to become a Magical Girl and defeat the threat known as witches, Madoka soon finds that such a life isn’t as cheery as you’d expect. In fact it’s full of danger, suffering and sacrifice. While its characters are as sweet as can be, its violent action scenes and dismantling of the typical heroine’s journey will not only leave you with a very different viewing experience but also make you forever question cute animal sidekicks.
#3: “Hunter x Hunter” (2011-14)
For those that like their anime filled with adventure and lovable characters, we refer you to one of the greatest entries to come from the shonen genre. Seeking to become a Hunter (an individual with the authority to explore and chase down who or whatever they wish) we’re introduced to the young but strong-minded Gon and his three companions Killua, Kurapika and Leorio. With their own personal dreams but tangible bond, these four find themselves in not only plenty of bizarre situations but also some pretty intense battles.

In a timeline where Japan has become a property of wicked colonists, it’s time for a rebellion. Determined to defeat his home nation of Britannia, Lelouch assumes the guise of the masked figure known as Zero, staging a mass rebellion with the subjugated Japanese forces while using the powers of the mind-controlling Geass. Aside from the fierce mecha battles and supernatural elements, the real draw of this series is Lelouch himself, whose desire to destroy Britannia takes him to some pretty dark places.
