7 Things You Should Know About SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy Seals
In a world of chaos, you must seize control! Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’ll be filling you in on everything you should know about SOCOM 4 by Zipper Interactive.
Set in Asia, you are placed in the role of Cullen Gray, the "Ops Commander" and leader of a 5-man NATO Special Forces squad deployed near the Strait of Malacca.
On your missions, American, British and South American operatives accompany you. With their assistance, you must tackle a plot involving a revolutionary group called “Naga.”
In the newly refocused campaign, the single player experience has been given a much
larger emphasis. Moving away from individual missions loosely strung together with some light story elements, SOCOM 4 has you entrenched in a brutal 6-day war with no option for retreat or surrender. In total, the campaign includes 14 unique missions, 4 of which are dedicated to covert ops, where you’ll stick to the shadows, and foliage, to obtain crucial enemy intel.
Like its predecessors, SOCOM 4 is a squad-based tactical shooter. As such, you must command your computer-controlled team-members. These prompts include setting waypoints, setting behaviors, issuing squad commands and telling the squad to take out multiple targets on their way to an objective.
Further helping you take command of the actions of your squad is the game’s special ability called “Command Mode.” As the Ops Commander you can toggle this feature to key you in on points of tactical interest that cannot otherwise be seen. Doing so will slow down the action on screen, while turning your display grey as you decide on your choices, all without pausing the ongoing combat operations.
A large focus of SOCOM 4 is on cooperative play. This time around, there are many more options to choose from.
The basic scenarios to play with a friend are called “takedown”, and “espionage.”
The first of which requires your squad to infiltrate an enemy compound and eliminate the VIP target. This can be accomplished with stealth, full-on assault, or a combination of the two.
“Espionage” on the other hand has your squad extracting key data items from the enemy.
And for some extra excitement, these co-op game modes lead to your team getting overwhelmed by hordes of bad guys.
Upon choosing a cooperative play scenario, the host player will have to take their pick of one of the 6 available maps, select the difficulty, and the number of enemy forces.
These options allow for an immense level of customization in match creation. Adding to this is the fact that enemy AI, locations and behavior are completely randomized.
This means that the enemy reacts dynamically to the situation at hand, employing all of the same tactics at your disposal, including flanking maneuvers and laying down suppressive fire.
All of these elements help to create a dynamic co-op experience that is always fresh for your 2 to 5 man squad.
Fans know that the multiplayer component of the SOCOM series is its most compelling feature. So for this latest entry, the online multiplayer player count has been upped dramatically to 32 players.
Taking place across several game maps, the multiplayer includes 4 thrilling game types. These include “Suppression”, “Uplink”, “Bomb Squad”, and “Last Defense.”
“Suppression” is your standard Team Deathmatch mode and can be played with either new, or classic rules, such as no respawn or health regeneration.
“Uplink” is a capture the flag mode where one team is charged with collecting enemy intel and the other must defend it.
“Bomb Squad” has one team trying to diffuse a bomb. The key is that one member of the diffusing team is armed with a special bomb-defusing suit. Due to this, his movements are slowed, but the suit provides him with heavy armor. While he conducts his mission, the rest of the team must protect him.
In the final mode, “Last Defence”, there are three points on the map. If a team manages to gain control of all three points, they are given a window in which they must plant an airstrike beacon on the enemy base.
Available exclusively for the PlayStation 3, SOCOM 4 provides thrilling action, top-level Move motion support, full stereoscopic 3d support, and a gripping narrative.
