Johnny Silverhand wasn’t always the hunky badboy rockstar we’ve been shown in “Cyberpunk 2077’s” marketing. According to official “Cyberpunk” lore, Johnny used to be a part of the United States military. He was sent to fight in a conflict known as the Second Central American War, which saw the US invade Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Columbia. This war would cost Johnny his arm. While the US claimed the war was to stop drug lords from further damaging the country, it was actually a plan for the US to steal the land and its resources, thus giving them control over the Western Hemisphere. These plans were eventually exposed to the public, and like many of his fellow soldiers, Johnny abandoned the military, becoming a deserter.

Johnny the Rockstar

Having to begin a whole new life, Johnny returned to Night City and changed his name from Robert John Linder to Johnny Silverhand - a last name that referred to his new cybernetic arm. The Second Central American Conflict and the corruption of the US government provoked Johnny into adopting a more rebellious nature. And what could be more rebellious than hard rock? Johnny formed a band with guitarist Kerry Eurodyne, keyboard player Nancy, and two other musicians named Denny and Henry. Under the band name Samurai, the group won universal fame for their style and role in the Rockerboy movement.

As during his stint in the army, Johnny’s time in the music business brought him face-to-face with corruption and greed. After Nancy took her abusive boyfriend’s life, Samurai was forced to disband, and Johnny attempted to launch a solo music career. One label tried to force Johnny to sign on by blackmailing him, threatening to expose his status as a deserter. After signing with a different label, Johnny released an entire album admitting to his past while further exposing the shady orders given by the United States government during the war. Unsurprisingly, the album was a massive hit.

One thing players should know about Johnny is that the guy is not the biggest fan of Arasaka, a mega-conglomerate that specializes in banking and security. However, his intense grudge is pretty understandable. In 2013, Arasaka kidnapped Johnny’s girlfriend, Alt Cunnigham, forcing her to develop a software called Soulkiller. With this, the company could download a netrunner’s person’s brain, rendering their physical body a husk. Johnny recruited several people to help him rescue her, including former band members. But despite his best efforts, Alt died, although her mind lived on - inside Arasaka’s mainframe. Johnny snapped.

In the 2020s, the Fourth Corporate War broke out, and Araraska was hired to fight against the security forces of megacorporation Militech. In the midst of this conflict, Johnny led a raid on Arasaka’s HQ in Night City, plotting revenge and hoping to rescue Alt. However, blocking his path stood a colossal Cyborg employed by Arasaka. This hulking menace was once an ordinary criminal no bigger than your average street thug. After a job ended with him becoming minced meat, his friends took his remains to a corporation where they turned him into the killer cyborg known as “Adam Smasher”. As Johnny and Adam fought, Arasaka fell victim to an attack conducted by Militech, and after the smoke cleared, Johnny had disappeared.

Since that fateful event, Johnny’s whereabouts and remains are still unclear. Many have pronounced him dead, but debate how he met his end. Some say Adam Smasher came out on top in their fight. Others believe Johnny was killed by Militech’s attack on Arasaka. As for his reputation, the denizens of Night City have begun to wane on their former admiration for the original Rockerboy. There are some who choose to forever remember him for his music and honesty whereas others have deemed him a terrorist looking to burn down buildings for kicks. Still, the graffiti in Night City shows that many continue to ask “Where’s Johnny?”

Johnny & You

Despite his apparent demise, you’ll be seeing quite a bit of Johnny Silverhand during your time in Night City. How so? Turns out your character, V, is seeing him. Not physically, though. Johnny is more like a digital ghost, a virtual spectre that’s found his way into V’s brain. From there, he’ll give you ideas on how to survive Night City. But this also raises a ton of questions. Does his digital presence confirm his death? Does he plan to turn V into his own vessel to lead a new rebellion? Will his presence cause Night City to go down in flames? Hopefully we’ll get those answers when “Cyberpunk 2077” launches on December 10...unless it gets delayed again, in which case, August 14th 2035!
