10 Unanswered Questions For Mortal Kombat 3
10 Unanswered Questions For Mortal Kombat 3
Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we’re looking at questions that “Mortal Kombat 3” needs to answer. There will be spoilers for the first two movies.
Does Cole’s Wife & Child Know He’s Dead?
2021’s “Mortal Kombat” ended with Cole Young heading to Hollywood to find Johnny Cage. So naturally, the next movie opens with… Raiden and Sonya recruiting Johnny. Yeah, this was the first sign that Cole’s role was not only being downgraded, but he was going to die. After being a less-than-beloved lead in the previous film, Cole’s only significant line here is about how he’s willing to sacrifice his life, even with a wife and child at home. Subtle foreshadowing! That said, did anyone remember to tell Allison or Emily that Cole got his head bashed in? Wouldn’t Scorpion have something more to say about his descendant dying? Cole might just get resurrected anyway, but his family’s probably wondering why he isn’t responding to their texts.
Will Hanzo & Bi-Han’s Rivalry Continue?
The rivalry between Hanzo Hasashi, aka Scorpion, and Bi-Han, aka Sub-Zero, was a highlight of the 2021 film. Although Hanzo at last got his revenge, Bi-Han returns in the sequel as the undead Noob Saibot. Once again, Scorpion tells an old enemy to “get over here!” With the next film likely to revolve around the Netherrealm, it only seems natural that Hanzo and Bi-Han will have a third round. Will Bi-Han remain Noob Saibot, though, or could he somehow come back as Sub-Zero? Maybe instead of Bi-Han, “Mortal Kombat 3” will introduce Kuai Liang, his younger brother, who takes on the Sub-Zero mantle. Hanzo and Kuai Liang even become allies in the games, meaning Scorpion and Sub-Zero may fight side by side in “MK3.”
When Are We Going to See These Fan Favorites?
Kuai Liang is just one character that we could see added to the roster. The “Mortal Kombat 3” game introduced several fighters, most notably Nightwolf. It’d be great to finally see him in a live-action movie that isn’t “Mortal Kombat Annihilation.” Riot control officer Kurtis Stryker was another popular breakthrough from the “MK3” game, but we’ve barely seen him in live-action outside of the “Legacy” web series. Now that Johnny Cage has debuted in this continuity, could a relationship bloom between him and Sonya, leading to their daughter Cassie Cage appearing in the next film via time travel? From Kenshi to Mileena, there’s no shortage of fighters that they could bring into the fold, but how many can they squeeze in?
Will Shinnok Be the Big Bad?
With the Netherrealm being set up for the next film, it only makes sense for the primary villain to be Shinnok. The Fallen Elder God first appeared in “ Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero,” but “Mortal Kombat 4” cemented him as one of the franchise’s most formidable foes. Banished to the Netherrealm, Shinnok breaks free with an assist from Quan Chi, who has already appeared in the film continuity. Maybe the third movie will see Quan Chi strike a deal with Shinnok, helping him escape the Netherrealm and exact vengeance upon those who trapped him there. In addition to revenge, Shinnok seeks to rule the other realms. Some may join him, but we could also see rivals team up to protect all realms from a common enemy.
Will Kano Switch Sides Again?
Kano acts in his own interest. He betrays our heroes in the first film, which proves to be his undoing at Sonya’s hands. Quan Chi resurrects Kano in the sequel, but he doesn’t turn him into a revenant. Although Quan Chi can’t control Kano, the villains keep him around for… reasons. This proves to be a miscalculation, as Kano backstabs the bad guys, figuring that aiding Earthrealm will be better in the long run. Kano is still allied with our heroes in the end, although Sonya is ready to yank out his eye again if necessary. Will “Moral Kombat 3” see Kano go through a genuine redemption arc, or will he switch sides yet again if a better offer presents itself?
What’s Up with Sindel?
While certainly a better portrayal than what we got in “Annihilation,” it feels like a lot of Queen Sindel’s development took place off-screen in “Mortal Kombat II.” After Shao Kahn takes over Edenia, it’s revealed that he corrupted Sindel, making her his puppet. Sonya ultimately defeats Sindel in a fight to the death, but she’s brought back later, presumably thanks to Quan Chi. Then… the movie just kind of forgets about her. Is Sindel a revenant? Now that Shao Kahn has been defeated, is Sindel still loyal to him? We get that Kitana has a lot on her plate, but you’d think saving her mother would be a top priority. Maybe the third film will see Sindel’s soul restored. Otherwise, too bad?
Are Arcana Still a Thing?
In the first movie, it’s established that fighters gain powers by unlocking their “arcana.” “Mortal Kombat II” writer Jeremy Slater acknowledged that these dragon marks weren’t one of the previous film’s brighter ideas, comparing arcana to “midichlorians.” While the sequel doesn’t completely ignore the dragon marks, the idea is largely abandoned. Johnny seemingly unlocks his powers during the climactic fight, although it’s a little unclear if this is his arcana. For that matter, did characters like Kitana or Jade ever get arcana? Does Kano even need arcana if Quan Chi could make him a new eye anyway? The filmmakers have suggested that arcana won’t be mentioned in further installments, but it seems like a significant plot point just to forget about.
Will Deceased Villains Come Back?
“Mortal Kombat II” makes it clear that death is more of a temporary inconvenience in this universe. As such, it wouldn’t be surprising if “Mortal Kombat 3” saw the return of fallen villains like Goro, Reptile, and even Shao Kahn, especially if our heroes find themselves in the Netherrealm. They could also potentially encounter Kung Lao and Bi-Han, who have basically died more than once now. Could some of these characters be fully revived with their personalities and free will intact, like Kano, or would they become revenants under Quan Chi’s control? There seems to be a fair number of loopholes when it comes to resurrecting characters in “Mortal Kombat.” So, we guess pretty much anything is on the table.
Will Cole & Jax Be Resurrected?
Our heroes faced multiple fatalities in the sequel, with Shao Kahn defeating Jax and turning Cole’s head into a bloody pulp. The film ultimately ends with the characters heading to the Netherrealm to revive their friends. While we know Quan Chi can bring back the dead, his dark magic comes with some strings attached. Even if they find Cole and Jax, would Quan Chi just bring them back as revenants? If so, that might be a fate worse than death. Maybe they’ll have to fight their way out of the Netherrealm to preserve their souls. Also, when they track them down, will Jax still have his mechanical arms, and will Cole have regrown his head? Or will Cole just be running around headless?
What Exactly Happened to Liu Kang?
Gamers might’ve expected Liu Kang to defeat Shao Kahn in “Mortal Kombat II.” Liu Kang ultimately accepts that this isn’t his fight to win, however. Instead, he disappears into fire, presumably going to another plane of existence where he may still be able to save Kung Lao. So… does that mean Liu Kang died, too? Even Jeremy Slater, who wrote the script, doesn’t seem entirely sure, mentioning in a Variety interview it’s “a mystery that’s going to be explored in ‘Mortal Kombat III.’” That said, Slater also noted that “[They] always knew that [they] would be bringing Liu Kang back in some regard in the third movie.” Dead or alive, we already mentioned that death is anything but permanent in this series.
