For this list, we’ll be going over some important details you should know about this highly anticipated sci-fi action adventure. What are you looking forward to the most in Scars Above? When a colossal alien structure known as ‘The Metahedron’ suddenly appears in Earth’s orbit, a group known as The Sentient Contact Assessment and Response team is sent out to investigate. Unluckily for them, they soon find themselves transported by the Metahedron to a mysterious extrasolar planet. Players will take on the role of one of the crew members, Dr. Kate Ward. An astronaut and scientist who will have to put their skills to the test of uncovering the mystery of the planet and what exactly happened to her missing teammates.
For those of you looking to scratch that Soulslike itch since the release of last year's Elden Ring, then Scars Above is the perfect game for you, as it incorporates familiar elements many fans have become accustomed to. Throughout the game you will encounter Alien Pillar-like structures, which not only act as checkpoints, but every time you activate them enemies will respawn and you’ll be granted some ammo. Each time you’re taken down by an enemy threat you’ll be taken back to the pillar, so be sure to activate every one you come across!
When first starting the game, you’ll be given the option of three different difficulty levels, Rookie, Specialist and Commander. Whichever one you pick, you'll be taking on an adventure that’ll test your gaming skills. Reading the enemies’ attack patterns will be key alongside discovering their weaknesses. Scars Above is a game for those who feel a great sense of achievement after overcoming a difficult situation.
The planet Kate finds herself on is home to a variety of extremely hostile aliens, many of which will attack you when you least expect it. In order to combat these foes, Kate wields a number of different weapons and gadgets, each with their own elemental type that the player will use to their advantage against their weaknesses. She will be able to combine different elemental effects, allowing her to use different tactics to defeat the enemies. Kate will also be able to run and dodge enemies with her limited stamina meter, so choose wisely when to dodge!
Throughout the game you’ll be able to take advantage of Kate’s scientific expertise with her incredibly useful scanning ability. You’ll be able to scan any foes you have defeated and learn of their weaknesses, along with gaining absolutely vital knowledge. Kate will also use this ability to conduct an analysis on what happened to her fellow team mates via an examination zone, helping you further uncover the mystery. Perhaps the best feature of scanning is that you'll use it to uncover new ways to craft and upgrade your equipment.
It’s not just standard enemies Kate will encounter in this game, the mysterious exoplanet also is also home to some extremely challenging but fun boss fights. These huge alien creatures will easily overpower you if you’re not careful, and it’ll be quite the lengthy battle due to their massive health bars. But much like the standard enemies you’ll have to figure out different elemental combinations and weaknesses in order to take them down, all the while dodging their incredible attacks.
Scars Above features impressive level design that rewards you for exploring every nook and cranny. Players will be able to discover shortcuts to previous pillar checkpoints, allowing for a shorter travel time between areas. The game also features various immersive areas, players will be able to explore marshlands, underground caves, frozen wastelands, and most importantly mysterious alien installations. Each of these will feature their own unique set of tasks and enemies for the player to take on.
Resources are an important factor in Scars Above, as the more you gather, the more likely Kate is to survive. Ammo is extremely important in the game, so be sure to pick up any resource relating to each element. Players will also want to pick up any fiber they come across, as it’ll allow them to take advantage of one of the many consumables, including the all important “Healing Injection” which will replenish your health. You’ll also be able to find components to upgrading your equipment, which will almost certainly help you out in the long run. The most important resource however is the aforementioned knowledge, which we will go into in our next entry…
For every piece of knowledge you acquire, it’ll go towards obtaining extremely important ability points. With these points you’ll be able to unlock a wide array of different skills that’ll help Kate survive this harsh environment. Some of the early skills we recommend unlocking are “Constitution” to increase your all important health and “Biomass Combining” which lowers the cost of consumables by 20%. If you’re uncertain which skills to unlock, you can reset them at any time, allowing you to customize Kate’s abilities and try out various builds.
For those of you looking forward to Scars Above, you won't have to wait much longer. The sci-fi action adventure is currently scheduled to release on February 28th of this year. The game will be available on both PlayStation and Xbox consoles, along with digital PC stores such as Steam.
