10 Questions We Need Answered in Kingdom Hearts IV
Welcome to MojoPlays, and today I’m pausing my playthrough of “Kingdom Hearts II”, after playing “Kingdom Hearts”, and “Chain of Memories”, and before playing “Birth by Sleep”, “Dream Drop Distance”, and “Kingdom Hearts III”, to discuss everything I still don’t know. These are 10 Questions We Need Answered in “Kingdom Hearts IV”.
What's In The Box?
The Black Box has been teasing "Kingdom Hearts" fans for years, yet we still have absolutely no idea what's actually inside it. First introduced in "Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover," the mysterious chest has been passed around by characters whose story stretches back centuries, if not even longer. Then "Kingdom Hearts III" made things even more suspicious by having Maleficent and Pete spend part of the adventure searching for it, only for Luxu to reveal he had it all along. Naturally, the game ends before anyone opens the thing. Classic "Kingdom Hearts." At this point, nobody even knows whether the contents are world-changing or surprisingly ordinary, making the Black Box one of the series' biggest unanswered mysteries heading into "Kingdom Hearts IV."
Demyx, Larxene, Luxord, and Marluxia
Although several former Organization XIII members return in "Kingdom Hearts III," most of them don't get much time in the spotlight. Demyx especially spends most of the game looking like he accidentally wandered into the wrong entry. Despite their small roles, Xemnas drops an intriguing detail by revealing they were originally chosen because of their connection to Keyblades. Thanks to "Kingdom Hearts Union χ," we already know a little about Marluxia and Larxene's past, but the full story is still missing. Demyx and Luxord are even bigger mysteries, with almost nothing confirmed about who they were before joining the Organization. Hopefully "Kingdom Hearts IV" finally gives these overlooked characters the attention and backstory they've been teasing for years.
Who is the Lost Master?
Right from its reveal, "Kingdom Hearts IV" makes it clear that the series is turning the page. Before the trailer even begins, the words "The Lost Master Arc" appear, signalling the start of an entirely new chapter rather than simply continuing the previous storyline. While the events of the "Kingdom Hearts III Re Mind" DLC and "Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory" help bridge the gap, (sidebar, I hate the way lore is dispersed in this series) Square Enix has confirmed this marks the end of the Dark Seeker Saga, which revolved around Xehanort. Instead, the focus now shifts toward a fresh mystery. The title almost certainly points to the Master of Masters, a mysterious figure who has quietly become one of the most important characters in the franchise's sprawling lore, even if plenty of players barely know who he is yet.
The Master Of Masters, Luxu, And The Foretellers
Speaking of: Ever since "Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover," the Master of Masters has felt like the person secretly pulling the strings behind almost everything. We still don't know who he really is, but his motivations are an even bigger mystery than his identity. Somehow he possesses knowledge of future events and even helped guide Xehanort toward the role he would eventually play, suggesting countless moments throughout the series happened because he wanted them to. The obvious question is... why? Whatever his true objective is, he's been incredibly patient. The same mystery surrounds Luxu and the recently returned Foretellers. Are they still loyal to their old master, or have their goals changed over time? Hopefully "Kingdom Hearts IV" finally starts answering these long-standing questions, instead of releasing a browser based game in 2 years that answers this question while asking 17 more.
Who Are Those Two Guys on The Skyscraper?
No series loves mysterious figures in black coats quite like "Kingdom Hearts." At this point they're practically as inevitable as Goofy. The cloaked character calmly standing with their hands behind their back is widely believed to be the Master of Masters, who looks set to become a central figure in "Kingdom Hearts IV" and the entire Lost Master Arc. The second hooded person, however, is far harder to pin down. Since Luxu's true identity was finally revealed in "Kingdom Hearts III," fans have been left wondering whether this is a brand-new apprentice, an Organization XIII member whose past is still unexplored, or simply another mystery Square Enix is keeping under wraps until my previously mentioned browser based game “Kingdom Hearts 3D PTV DTF underscore x”
Strelitzia
One of the biggest surprises in the reveal trailer for "Kingdom Hearts IV" is the girl who welcomes Sora to Quadratum. If you've only played the console games, there's a good chance you had absolutely no idea who she was. That character is Strelitzia, an important figure from "Kingdom Hearts Union χ." Long before Sora's adventure, she was chosen to become one of the new leaders who would succeed the Foretellers, but her story was cut tragically short when she was killed before taking on that role. She's also the sister of Lauriam, who later became Organization XIII's Marluxia. Her appearance in Quadratum raises some huge questions about death, alternate realities, and what it actually means to exist in the ever-confusing world of "Kingdom Hearts."
The Forest
The forest shown in the "Kingdom Hearts IV" reveal doesn't have an official location yet, but its realistic style immediately stands out. It matches the grounded look of Quadratum and hints that the sequel could lean further into lifelike environments, especially with Square Enix developing the game in Unreal Engine 5. That has naturally fuelled speculation about which Disney properties might appear. The biggest theory is "Star Wars," thanks to a brief shot that many fans believe shows the foot of an AT-ST hidden among towering trees that resemble Endor's forests. It's hardly definitive proof, but it's enough to get the internet buzzing. Since Disney now owns both Lucasfilm and Marvel, fans have wanted those worlds for years. Tetsuya Nomura previously explained that licensing agreements made those crossovers difficult, even under Disney's umbrella. With those hurdles potentially resolved and "Kingdom Hearts III" already introducing Pixar worlds for the first time, many players are hoping the next adventure finally delivers a galaxy far, far away... and maybe even that long-requested lightsaber Keyblade. GOD YES!
Who Is Subject X?
One of the biggest mysteries still hanging over the series is the identity of Subject X. We know she was a young girl who became the victim of Xehanort's experiments, but beyond that, the clues are frustratingly vague. Pieces of her story are scattered throughout Xehanort's reports, while Lea and Isa's history reveals they once tried to rescue her in Radiant Garden before somehow ending up as Axel and Saïx within Organization XIII instead. Exactly how that dramatic change happened has never been properly explained. Fans have spent years debating whether Subject X is actually Strelitzia, Skuld, or someone else entirely, but nothing has been confirmed. With so many unanswered questions tied to her, "Kingdom Hearts IV" feels like the perfect opportunity to finally reveal the truth.
Where are Donald and Goofy?
Although Quadratum has a far more realistic look than anything we've seen before in the series, "Kingdom Hearts IV" isn't leaving Disney's classic style behind. Donald and Goofy appear at the end of the trailer looking exactly as fans would expect, wandering through a dark location while searching for someone who is almost certainly Sora. Their search is interrupted by a mysterious voice surrounded by a blue glow that suddenly shifts to red, startling both of them before the trailer cuts to black. Most fans believe the speaker is Hades, who has appeared in every numbered "Kingdom Hearts" game so far. Considering the sequel seems heavily focused on death, the afterlife, and travelling between different realities, the ruler of the Underworld would be a fitting character to bring back. It also reassures fans that, even if the series explores more realistic settings and possibly worlds like "Star Wars," there will still be plenty of room for the colourful Disney charm that has always defined "Kingdom Hearts."
What Is Unreality?
The reveal trailer for "Kingdom Hearts IV" introduces Quadratum, but it leaves players with far more questions than answers. We know it's a city inspired by a real location in Japan, and that it exists within something called "unreality," a realm described as a world of fiction. That's a wonderfully confusing concept for a series that was already confusing enough. Since both Sora and Strelitzia end up there, many fans have wondered if Quadratum functions as a kind of afterlife. If that's true, could familiar faces like Eraqus or even Xehanort appear again? The trailer also hints that Quadratum isn't the only world within unreality, opening the door to countless possibilities. Hopefully future trailers start filling in some of these enormous blanks before the game finally arrives, mainly because I absolutely cannot wait.
