If there's a type of challenge that pushes even the most skilled heroes to their limits, it's the most unforgiving sections within the world of Gotham's iconic protector. Join us as we explore the toughest gauntlets and most frustrating encounters that tested players' patience and combat prowess in the Arkham series. From intense stealth segments to grueling combat trials, these moments demanded perfection and left many players feeling like they needed a visit from Alfred.

The Subway Tunnel

“Batman: Arkham City” (2011)

We’re not talking about the first visit from when you’re trying to get into Penguin’s museum. That part is simple. The second time where you’re coming from Wonder City is the harder visit. It's at this point in the game where gargoyles become increasingly unsafe as enemies can scan whatever gargoyle looks suspicious. Not only that, but one thug in particular is jamming your detective vision. Most players can get through this without much hassle, but those who play a bit more recklessly might get peppered by a shotgun.

Shock and Awe

“Batman: Arkham Asylum” (2009)

For those who may not be great at multitasking, you may have had some trouble finishing the Shock and Awe combat challenge. This challenge map reuses the electrified floor from when Batman apprehends Harley Quinn in the Psychiatric Ward. The only difference here is that you are under a strict time limit to complete each of the four rounds before the floor cooks the Dark Knight. The regular version of this challenge map is fairly hard, but the Extreme version is where the time limit is significantly decreased, causing some players to develop gray hair early from the stress.

The Final Riddler Track

“Batman: Arkham Knight” (2015)

One of the biggest gripes people have with “Arkham Knight” are the race tracks conjured up by the Riddler. These sections are essentially “puzzle races” where you have to use the Riddler’s mechanisms to manipulate the track as you blaze through it. However, the final course is notorious for trap placement and tight turns. It can be really easy to lose control or hit a bladed pillar too hard. To make matters worse, Riddler removes your control of the track on the final lap, and this is what will make or break most players.

Two-Face’s Museum Visit

“Batman: Arkham City” (2011)

Just when you thought you’ve beaten “Arkham City”, there’s one more loose end to tie up, and it’s a toughie. As Catwoman, you will have to take down Two-Face and his henchmen, who have taken over the museum. The problem isn’t necessarily in enemy variety, but in level design and Catwoman’s own abilities. As a trade off for crawling on ceilings, she only has caltrops and her whip. Unfortunately, neither of those can take down Mr. Dent’s cronies as quickly as a Sonic Batarang or some explosive gel can. You basically need to keep your wits about you and pounce on Harv if you ever catch him wandering around alone.

A Flip of a Coin

“Batman: Arkham Knight” (2015)

For as much as we love having different playable characters with unique abilities, Robin’s DLC campaign was a migraine and a half. A Flip of a Coin puts you in a similar situation as “Arkham City” does with Catwoman. Like the feline burglar, Robin doesn’t have a ton of gadgets to employ as Batman does. So, when you get to the portion of the Main Office where some thugs are being protected by turrets that can gun you down in seconds…yeah, things can get more frustrating than you’d like. What sucks is that you go through all that effort just for Two-Face to be defeated in the most ridiculously stupid way possible.

The Rollercoaster Room

“Batman: Arkham City” (2011)

Despite Joker–I mean, Clayface’s involvement in this fight, we’re not counting this as a boss fight. He’s basically a thug that you cannot take down until after the rest are defeated. And that’s precisely what makes this fight so hard. Our faux Joker will hound you the entire time while the other enemies come armed with a variety of weapons ON TOP of getting assistance from Mr. Hammer. Oh, and do we need to mention the room has two rollercoaster tracks that can also deal a significant amount of damage? Yeah, you can use them for your own benefit, but something tells us the enemies don’t take as much pain from those as Batman does.

The Final Riddlerbot Brawl

“Batman: Arkham Knight” (2015)

So many have voiced their disdain for this portion of Catwoman’s campaign in “Arkham Knight”. “Catwoman’s Revenge” sees Ms. Kyle sneaking into a toy shop and robot factory to finally bring the Riddler down. The robot factory’s final room is where most players found themselves in a tornado of fury. You do not get much room to move around in, and the electrified floor goes off in such short intervals that you can rarely ever execute Catwoman’s own special moves due to their long animations, leaving you vulnerable to take an egregious amount of damage. You’re pretty much left to standard punches, kicks, and counters as anything else can get you killed..

Botanical Gardens

“Batman: Arkham Asylum” (2009)

As a whole, the Botanical Gardens boasts some of the hardest stealth sections in the entirety of “Arkham Asylum”. The rooms here are much more claustrophobic and/or open. The central glasshouse leaves almost zero room for stealth without gargoyles. But the hardest section of all is the Aviary, which requires you to follow a fairly strict, linear path all the way to the control room. You’re more than likely going to retry a few encounters here if you haven’t been keeping pace with upgrades.

Top of the World

“Batman: Arkham City” (2011)

This is hands down the hardest part of “Arkham City”, whether you’re doing the campaign’s version or the challenge maps. Top of the World takes place at the very tip-top of Wonder Tower, and you will have even fewer opportunities to maintain your cover here. All gargoyles are placed outside and away from the guards. Your only means of keeping yourself hidden are a few grates that are part of a single path and a handful of crates and supplies scattered around the control room. You’ll have to think fast, act fast, and retreat even faster to make it out of this alive.

Azrael’s Final Test

“Batman: Arkham Knight” (2015)

To this day, Azrael’s final challenge haunts thousands upon thousands of “Arkham Knight” players. In order to prove he really is the Dark Knight’s successor, Azrael must defeat an entire gang of criminals without getting hit a single time. This could be easier if the enemies weren’t carrying numerous weapons like knives, stun batons, shields, and, well, whatever else they can get their grubby hands on. They are super aggressive, too, way more than the normal enemies you have encountered before. It’s really no wonder why many have chosen to walk away from this one. Azrael’s worthy Bruce - he doesn’t have to do this, and neither do we.
