10 Games ALMOST RUINED by a Single Boss
10 Games Ruined By A Single Boss
Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we’re taking a look at 10 amazing games that were decimated because of one awful boss fight.
Andross
“Star Fox Adventures” (2002)
For what it is, “Star Fox Adventures” is a solid game. It isn’t what we wanted after “Star Fox 64”, but it's still a fairly good action-adventure game. However, the final fight against Andross left players extremely disappointed and even a tad irritated. Right when you’re about to defeat General Scales, Andross appears out of nowhere and reveals he’s been the mastermind the entire time. What follows is…basically the same exact fight from “Star Fox 64”. This rehash of an old villain with absolutely no hint to his possible resurrection in the game caused many to dismiss “Adventures” for several long years.
Alpha-152
“Dead Or Alive 4” (2005)
“Dead Or Alive 4” is such an awesome game, probably the best fighting game to ever grace the Xbox 360. The thing is that it is sometimes REALLY hard to say that knowing that the majority of the characters end their stories fighting Alpha-152. This boss is infamous for her comically easy combos, combos that can be performed by mashing the same button. She lands so many hits and deals so much damage for very little effort that it is infuriating. So, when you hear someone say how DOA 4 is the best…they’re probably talking about the multiplayer.
The Arkham Knight
“Batman: Arkham Knight” (2015)
There are a lot of reasons to scrutinize “Arkham Knight”. Be it the Bat-tank segments, the overwhelming combat mechanics, or the dumb plot twist behind the Arkham Knight, everyone has their boogeyman with this game. But really, the fight against the Arkham Knight was what really burned people. This dude spends all game calling Batman “old” and acting like a hotshot just to come at him with a dumb tank AND he still needs help from other tanks? Nothing about this final bout feels exciting. It feels more like we’re fighting a true coward.
The Destroyer
“Borderlands” (2009)
Whereas most RPGs will run you about sixty to maybe a hundred hours of playtime, “Borderlands” isn’t anywhere close to that. You can easily beat it in about a week, maybe two if you want to see and do everything. But the way it all ends with The Destroyer is just a massive stain on the campaign. You’ve done all this exploring and hunting for the legendary Vault, and it’s just a tentacled monster capable of doing only a couple of attacks? We basically got rewarded with a boring boss fight for all of the time spent wandering Pandora. Thanks, Gearbox.
The Ghost of Lady Comstock
“BioShock: Infinite” (2013)
Say what you will about “Infinite”, but overall, it’s a really great game. Do we want to replay it? Well, maybe until the point where you get to Lady Comstock’s ghost. This is one of the most notorious boss fights of the 2010s because of how repetitive and difficult she can be. Most of your time will be spent reviving fallen soldiers and desperately searching for any shred of ammunition. That coupled with some nonsense attacks where her ghost just gets guaranteed hits on you, and you’ve got a boss that we’d rather not fight ever again.
Alice Hiiragi
“Persona 5 Strikers” (2021)
“Persona 5 Strikers” is absolutely one of the greatest Musou games Koei Tecmo has ever released. It perfectly combines the concepts of “Persona 5” and adapts them into a difficult action RPG. Unfortunately, there is one crucial mechanic that isn’t introduced until after you defeat the first boss of the game, Alice Hiiragi. Both during this boss fight and probably even fights before, you will constantly feel like you’re running low on SP. You don’t get access to a decent amount of SP recovery items until AFTER you defeat Alice. On top of that, she hits so hard that you’re likely to lose two or three of your party members early on and might have to solo her with Ann.
Lambent Brumak
“Gears of War 2” (2008)
Out of the original trilogy, “Gears of War 2” is perhaps the best game of the three. But this is another situation that’s like Andross in “Star Fox Adventures” where it feels like no one knew how to properly end the game. So, what we got here was not a massive horde to fight or even some superpowered bro dude with locust powers or whatever. No, the fight against Lambent Brumak is a freakin’ turret section. Just sit and keep shooting until it's dead. What FUN.
Barrett
“Deus Ex: Human Revolution” (2011)
Unlike most of our entries here, Barrett doesn’t get a spot because he’s too hard or switches up the story unexpectedly. Instead, he’s the prime example of just how flawed “Human Revolution” is. See, unlike the older entries that catered to your playstyle, “Human Revolution” is primarily built around one particular playstyle, yet has moments specifically catered to a completely different playstyle. Basically, conflicting and contradicting design decisions were made here. And with Barrett, if you haven’t primarily focused on primarily stealth or hacking, you’re going to have a bad time.
Lucien Fairfax
“Fable II” (2007)
If you thought a turret section was god awful, how about the final boss of “Fable II”? By this point, Lucien has the power to, in his words, “bring an end to chaos”. How do you stop him? Do you duel him? Cast a spell on him? Kick him like the chicken chaser you are? No, you just fight back his spells until he loses all control, and then, shoot him. That’s it! That’s the end of “Fable II”! Congratulations, you beat the game! Hooray! Now, do you feel like a Hero?
Alduin
“The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” (2011)
Imagine spending hundreds of hours exploring the region of Skyrim. You’ve done all the quests, you’ve found all the secrets, you’ve learned all the Dragon Shouts, you’ve attained Sneak 100… Time to fight the final boss. Well, you know all those dragons you fought already? Yeah, you’re basically doing that. Again. And no, he doesn’t really do anything different. Don’t get it twisted - “Skyrim” is still one of the best games ever made. But ending the game with Alduin was not it, dude. It doesn’t help that you can bully him with Dragonrend.
