Welcome to MojoPlays and today we’re leveling up and looking at the 10 best PS5 upgrades of last gen games. For this list, we’ll be looking at some of the games that benefitted the most from the extra power boost of the PS5 whether that be purely performance or additional content. Warning: Get used to hearing 4K 60 frames per second a lot but it really should be the standard at this point. What was the most substantial upgrade to a PS4 game you’ve replayed on the PS5? Let us know down in the comments.

“Ghostrunner” (2021)

In a game all about precision platforming and split-second combat decisions like in Ghostrunner, performance is absolutely everything. Although the original release had more than its share of technical issues, the PS5 upgrade lets the game parkour past its competitors with a much smoother framerate which can be unlocked up to 120 frames per second all while still displaying the games neon visuals in stunning 4K. On top of the brand-new 3D audio, Ghostrunner makes fantastic use of the Dualsense and its haptic feedback, letting you feel every grapple swing and successful landing or stabby sword kill.

"Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered” (2020)

Granted the original Spider-Man game was released only two years prior to the PS5 launch but Insomniac set out to make the most out of the boost in performance thanks to the PS5’s SSD to bring their acclaimed web swinging adventure up to the standards of its follow-up Miles Morales. Besides the obvious boost in graphics with HDR lighting, improved textures and reflections, as well as Ray Tracing, the game’s performance received its own upgrade allowing it to run at a locked 60 frames per second where load times were nearly non-existent, not that you’d even want to use the fast travel system as you zipped around the many skyscrapers of the New York City skyline. Additionally, or controversially depending on your personal opinion, Insomniac also updated Peter’s face model, sporting a slightly younger looking Peter that would become the face of the hero for the franchise moving forward.

“Ride 4” (2021)

Admit it, when you first saw this footage, you thought it was real too. While Ride 4 was already an impressive looking game on the PS4, the PS5 upgrade brought the game closer to photo realism than any other title to date. Along with the upgraded 4K visuals and 60 frames per second gameplay, Ride 4 also incorporated many of the Dualsense’s features, putting the power of your speed machine in the palm of your hands and playing the game in first person might just be the closest some of us come to racing around the track at hundreds of miles per hour.

“Control: Ultimate Edition” (2021)

Control is a game that seemed specifically designed for next gen but was a couple years too early to really take advantage of the hardware. With the release of the Ultimate Edition, not only did Remedy include all the base game’s DLC but also significantly boosted the game’s performance with multiple presentation modes including stunning 4K with some very impressive Ray Tracing at 30 FPS or 4K 60 to get the most out of the game’s combat. The Ultimate Edition also includes numerous accessibility improvements including difficulty and invincibility options allowing players of any skill to explore The Oldest House.

“No Man’s Sky” (2022)

The original release of No Man’s Sky was rough to say the least. However, to Hello Games’ credit, they stuck with the game and eventually delivered on all those original promises and then some, bringing what easily could have been a disaster back from the brink to one of the best and most beloved survival sims of the modern era. While the game already had a steady stream of content updates, the Next Generation update was by far its most substantial. Besides 4K 60 becoming the standard, the worlds were also denser with more detail and foliage, base building got a substantial upgrade allowing for larger builds and you could now explore the galaxy with up to 32 of your closest friends even in crossplay across all platforms. The PS5 version also received Dualsense and 3D audio support as well as PSVR functionality.

“Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition” (2020)

Devil May Cry 5 was already the pinnacle of action games featuring lightning-fast combat, incredibly detailed visuals and inventive creature designs but with the Special Edition upgrade, the game unleashed its Devil Trigger and unlocked its true potential. Along with the standard ray tracing upgrades as well as 4K and 30 frames per second, if players choose to forgo ray tracing, they can unlock up to 120 frames per second all running in 4K for some of the most gloriously blazing fast combat in gaming. Also, in addition to higher difficulty settings as well as the return of Turbo Mode, players will also get to play through the campaign as Vergil, albeit without the cinematics obviously, as well as in the challenge mode Bloody Palace. Fans of the series will have plenty to keep them busy until the hopeful 6th entry emerges from the depths of the Underworld.

“Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade” (2021)

The long, long, LONG awaited Final Fantasy 7 Remake might not have been what every fan was expecting but there’s no denying visually and mechanically it was a very impressive game. The PS5 upgrade Intergrade managed to not only update the title’s visuals even further with Performance and Graphics modes that allow for the addition to the option of 60 frames per second as well as more realistic lighting and textures particularly in the background details. Along with the expected upgrades, Square also gave players an entirely new DLC campaign starring fan favorite character Yuffie as well as brand new ending that expands on the base game’s original outing.

“Cyberpunk 2077” (2022)

10 Things To Know Before Playing Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

Let’s just get this out of the way now: Cyberpunk 2077 NEVER should have been released on the PS4 and Xbox One. That’s not to say it ran substantially better on the PS5 or Xbox Series at first, but with the PS5 upgrade, the game both looks and runs closer to what players and CD Projekt Red expected. The PS5 upgrade brings with it not only improved visuals as expected but also significantly reduced loading times, increased frame rate and better texture mapping as well as improved and more realistic crowds and of course, fewer bugs and crashes. The update also has a plethora of gameplay improvements to driving, combat and character upgrades as well as additional content for dedicated players to track down. CD PRojekt Red earned themselves even more goodwill with a next gen update to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt only a few months later, although that update wasn’t nearly as substantial.

“Death Stranding: Director’s Cut” (2021)

Death Stranding might not have been what every Kojima fan was expecting from the auteur, but there’s no denying the man had a vision and he followed through on it. While the game drew criticisms, it still developed a loyal fanbase, and with the additional power of the PS5, Kojima gave players seemingly EVERYTHING he had originally wanted to include no matter how bizarre. Besides performance upgrades, Death Stranding included new ways for players to transport their packages, using everything from floating transports to robot delivery companions as well as jump ramps to launch Sam and his cargo across the map at lightning speed which you’ll feel every second of with the PS5’s Dualsense features. The Director’s Cut also adds more customization features and expanded combat options as well as a new mission that feels like a callback for any longtime fan of the Metal Gear series.

“Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut” (2021)

One of the last major releases on the PS4, Ghost of Tsushima pushed the aging console to its limits with its gorgeous world, engaging sword play and load times so fast they intentionally had to be slowed to allow players to read the tip screen. Along with improved visuals and naturally faster load times, the Director’s Cut not only includes haptic feedback with the PS5’s Dualsense that allows players to feel every sword strike and impressive 3D audio output, but also an entire new area to explore with the Iki Island expansion, along with Japanese lip sync and the ability to remap your controller layout. Like with all the other entries on our list, the Director’s Cut is the best way to play one of the PS4’s swansong titles.
