#20: Charlie Harper
“Two and a Half Men” (2003-15)
Behind-the-scenes drama often bleeds onto the screen, but rarely is it this messy. When star Charlie Sheen had a highly-publicized fallout with “Two and a Half Men’s” creator, his hedonistic character was abruptly killed off. Not subtly either. He literally got hit by a speeding train! While bringing in Ashton Kutcher kept the lights on for four more seasons, the cynical, lightning-in-a-bottle dynamic was permanently dead. Without its bowling-shirt-wearing anchor, “Two and a Half Men” felt like a completely different, much safer show, proving you can’t just replace the central heartbeat of a comedy and expect the laughs to hit the same way.
#19: Dr. Lawrence Kutner
“House” (2004-12)
It’s always sad to see a fan favorite go. But, to be fair, actor Kal Penn left for possibly the coolest reason ever. He went to work at the White House. Not as an actor on a show. Like, the actual White House! Sadly, it meant the brilliant Lawrence Kutner was suddenly found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The complete lack of warning or typical foreshadowing made the loss incredibly jarring. That’s without even mentioning the fan outcry! Kutner was a vibrant, deeply relatable presence on the diagnostic team, and his abrupt exit left a massive, unfillable void in the dynamic of “House” for the rest of its run.
#18: Marissa Cooper
“The O.C.” (2003-07)
Teen dramas thrive on tragedy, but pulling the plug on your core female lead is a massive gamble. The fiery, troubled heart of Orange County tragically bled out in Ryan Atwood’s arms following a fiery car crash in the season three finale. To say fans were inconsolable would be an understatement. While the writers felt her tragic spiral had nowhere else to go, her absence proved fatal for the series itself. “The O.C.” had lost its central, melodramatic gravity, and ended up stumbling through a final, much lighter fourth season that alienated its core audience. It turns out, California just wasn't the same without her signature brand of chaotic energy.
#17: Captain Phasma
“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (2015) & “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” (2017)
Chrome armor, a menacing swagger, and it’s Gwendoline freaking Christie. Who wouldn’t want to see more of Captain Phasma? Apparently, the answer is Disney. Despite all the potential in the galaxy, the sequel trilogy treated this First Order commander like a red-shirted stormtrooper. She’s barely in “The Force Awakens,” gets a single cool moment in “The Last Jedi,” and then plummets to her fiery death with little fanfare. It’s an astonishing waste of such a cool character, not to mention Christie’s commanding screen presence. If they weren’t going to do anything with her character, they shouldn’t have even bothered writing her in.
#16: Rita Morgan
“Dexter” (2006-13)
Just when our favorite blood-spatter analyst found a sliver of genuine domestic happiness, the Trinity Killer took it all away. Dexter finding his beloved bleeding out in a bathtub remains one of the most jaw-dropping television twists of the 2000s. However, the sheer shock value came at a massive, long-term cost. Rita was the essential moral anchor; the bright light contrasting the show's dark protagonist. Without her grounding presence, Dexter steadily lost its emotional compass. Many fans argue the series peaked in that horrifying bathroom, steadily declining in quality as it struggled to replace her invaluable spirit.
#15: Logan Echolls
“Veronica Mars” (2004-07; 2019)
You may be asking, how can the final minutes of the series finale be too early for a death? To that we say; exactly! Logan shouldn’t have died at all! Just a few, precious hours after marrying Veronica, the reformed bad boy is offed by a car bomb. Keep in mind, this happens in the last episode of the long-awaited revival, meaning fans spent actual years waiting for Logan and Veronica’s happily-ever-after. Depriving them of that for mere shock value did not go over well. If Logan had lasted just a few extra moments, the show could have peacefully walked off into the sunset. Instead, the ending is forever soured.
#14: Newt & Hicks
“Alien 3” (1992)
Surviving a vicious xenomorph attack should earn you a little peace, right? Not in David Fincher’s grim, deeply controversial sci-fi sequel. After the triumphant, hard-fought victory of “Aliens’” ending, viewers were instantly slapped in the face in the next installment. Newt and Hicks don’t just die. They’re written out off-screen! It completely undos the emotional climax of the previous film, isolating Ellen Ripley for a bleak, punishing narrative. Not only was it a complete waste of potential, but it genuinely feels like the creatives had no idea why the “Alien” movies worked in the first place.
#13: Dewey Riley
“Scream” (2022)
Look, no one expected 2022’s return to Woodsboro to be bloodless. But, offing everyone’s favorite, bumbling ex-deputy was simply one step too far. Alongside Gale and Sidney, he was the only survivor who’d made it through the entire “Scream” saga. To fans, Dewey was effectively franchise royalty. While his death is suitably dramatic, we can’t help but feel like it left too much unresolved, especially regarding his relationship with Gale. We at least needed a proper goodbye, dammit! Raising the stakes in a long-running franchise always comes at a price, and in this case, the cost was just too high.
#12: Lexa
“The 100” (2014-20)
There’s a lot to unpack here. On one hand, the writers were pushed into a corner when actress Alycia Debnam-Carey asked to exit the show for other opportunities. On the other, killing a badass, queer character with a random, stray bullet wasn’t exactly what we’d call “tactful.” Let’s just say the backlash was fast and ugly. Blowback aside, there’s no denying Lexa should’ve stayed on the show. Her and Clarke’s compelling dynamic fueled much of the show’s emotional conflict. Plus, Lexa was just cool as hell! Even if there were outside circumstances, there’s no denying Lexa exited the show as wasted potential.
#11: Scott Summers a.k.a. Cyclops
“X-Men: The Last Stand” (2006)
The Dark Phoenix saga is one of comic’s greatest story arcs, and Scott Summers is smack dab in the middle of it. In the original. Not the movie. Due to scheduling conflicts with actor James Marsden, this iconic story had to make do without Jean’s love interest. Technically he appears, but he’s vaporized so fast, he may as well be an afterthought. The movie was effectively gutted by this creative choice. There’s no weight to Jean’s corruption without the man she loves there to see it unfold. And, no, Logan doesn’t count. Cyclops deserved much, much better.
#10: George O’Malley
“Grey's Anatomy” (2005-)
This long-running medical drama doesn’t lack for beloved characters or too-hasty exits. But perhaps the most devastating is George’s exit. A fellow intern with Meredith and the others, George lasted until the sixth season, where he died by jumping in front of a bus to save a woman’s life. His heroic death is touching, but in hindsight came much too soon, considering the show is now anticipating its twenty-second season. The show perhaps knew this, because in Season 17, actor T. R. Knight reprised his role, appearing in Meredith’s visions. RIP, King.
#9: Pietro Maximoff a.k.a. Quicksilver
“Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015)
The twin brother of Wanda Maximoff, a.k.a. The Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver endeared himself to fans with his quick wit and his dedication to his sister. And of course, his superspeed. His death, giving his life to protect Hawkeye, is made all the more devastating for these reasons. He was also the first of the Avengers to be killed off. Why Pietro suffered this unceremonious fate is unclear. Many believe it had to do with the rights of the character, debated between 20th Century Fox and Marvel. Perhaps Quicksilver’s death raised the stakes more, or Marvel wanted a good surprise twist. Either way, Wanda’s grief for her lost brother leads him to return, seemingly alive, in “WandaVision.” We feel you, Wanda.
#8: Prue Halliwell
“Charmed” (1998-2006)
Killing off the main character of a series is something few shows have done, for good reason. Of the three Halliwell witches, Prue was the oldest and the most responsible. She was also the most powerful with her telekinetic abilities. But at the end of Season 3, Prue was fatally attacked by the demon Shax. This extremely early departure of a major character was for good reason: Prue’s actress, Shannen Doherty, had been fired from the show. While the producers considered replacing Prue’s actress, none of the options panned out. Instead, the show replaced Prue with a secret half-sister, Paige, in Season 4. It was definitely too soon.
#7: Glenn Rhee
“The Walking Dead” (2010-22)
One of the show’s most controversial moments, the death of this pizza-delivery-boy-turned-zombie survivor still hurts the most. While Glenn’s death was in the comics, the execution in the series was particularly devastating. Saviors leader Negan had already picked his victim, Abraham, when Daryl’s outbursts led him to take his grisly revenge on Glenn. It’s a scene all the more heartbreaking when Glenn’s death leaves his love, Maggie, bereft. Glenn’s departure from the show divided audiences, to the point where some even stopped watching the show afterward. Whether necessary or not, it’s a death that came too soon for many’s tastes.
#6: Stringer Bell
“The Wire” (2002-08)
This series doesn’t lack for characters whose end came too soon. Omar Little, for instance, was a beloved character who also met an untimely end. But Stringer Bell’s case is an interesting one. Played by Idris Elba, Bell was drug lord Avon Barksdale’s second-in-command, involved in money laundering, bribery, and other criminal activity. By Season 3, Avon betrayed Stringer, leading to his death at the hands of Omar and Brother Mouzone. His shocking death is made all the harder by the fact that Elba was also unhappy with the development. It still hurts years later.
#5: Bob Newby
“Stranger Things” (2016-25)
This show has tons of awful deaths. For starters, there’s Eddie Munson’s poignant sacrifice in Season 4. Then there’s Nancy’s friend and beloved fan favorite, Barb, whose death prompted a #JusticeforBarb campaign. But this wholesome character’s death packs a whole new level of heartbreak. Bob was only a minor character, but his kindness and sweet personality endeared him to many fans. His relationship with Joyce was also heartening to see unfold. Alas, his end came when he was attacked by Demodogs in Hawkins National Lab. Even showrunners Matt and Ross Duffer were affected, admitting that they were sobbing while writing the scene. At least he died a hero’s death.
#4: Matthew Crawley
“Downton Abbey” (2010-15)
Now, this was uncalled for. Matthew and Mary had finally broken off their engagements to other people and admitted their love to each other. At the beginning of Season 3, they were even getting married, and Mary was pregnant with his child. She delivers the baby safely, and Matthew gets to meet his newborn. And then, while driving home from the hospital, Matthew dies in a car accident. After surviving both World War 1 and the Spanish flu, a car crash ends this character’s life. Naturally, fans were devastated by this shocking turn of events and still mourn for what could never be.
#3: Tracy McConnell
“How I Met Your Mother” (2005-14)
Fans had long speculated that something must have happened to the titular mother of this series. But the reveal of the Mother’s fate in the finale of the show was still shocking. Before the finale, we learned many things about Tracy, even that she headed her own band, Superfreakonomics. Other characters of the show even interact with her in positive ways, and her winning personality endeared her quickly to fans. But in the finale, we learn that Tracy died of an undisclosed illness. To make matters worse, Ted gets together with Robin at the end. To say this finale was controversial is an understatement.
#2: Remus Lupin & Nymphadora Tonks
“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” (2011)
Arguably the best Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher Harry ever had, it’s safe to say Remus Lupin is everyone’s favorite werewolf. A long-time friend of Harry’s father while they were in school, Remus bonds with Harry and helps him out immensely. Audiences were further endeared to him thanks to the trauma resulting from his lycanthropy. It was heartening to see him find love with Tonks, who accepted him for what he was. When “Deathly Hallows” came out, revealing his and Tonks’ tragic deaths during the Battle of Hogwarts, fans everywhere were devastated. Even worse, their deaths leave their son, Teddy, an orphan. We’re not crying, we’ve just got something in our eye.
#1: Everyone in the Car“The Mist” (2007)
Just kidding!
#1: Tara Maclay
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (1997-2003)
This isn’t the first time the “Buffy” verse had a controversial death, admittedly. But Tara’s departure from this iconic show is still one fans debate about to this day. Tara was Willow’s girlfriend, but also a formidable witch in her own right, with a beautiful character arc about overcoming her shyness and embracing her inner strength. In Season 6, however, she is fatally shot. Her death was significant, prompting Willow to succumb to her dark powers. Even so, many fans quit watching the show after her death. Showrunner Joss Whedon and Tara’s actress Amber Benson even had to clarify there was no ill intent behind the decision. Perhaps there is such a thing as succeeding too well in shocking your audience.
