#10: 2021 Had “Drag Race” on TV Basically Every Single Week
If the year 2021 felt like one long drag binge, that’s because it kind of was. Between January and December, there was always at least one new episode airing somewhere in the franchise every week. “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 13 kicked off on January 1st and ran through April, then “Drag Race Down Under” premiered the following week. “All Stars” 6 picked up right after that, followed by “Drag Race Holland” Season 2, with UK Season 3 premiering the same week Holland ended. Add UK Season 2 and “Drag Race España” earlier in the year, and the franchise basically colonized the calendar. The only week in 2021 without a new franchise episode was the final week of December.
#9: It Took 16 Seasons to Cast a Queen Whose Name Started With Q or X
As of Season 18, nearly 250 queens have competed across all seasons of “RuPaul's Drag Race”. And yet, for the longest time, two letters of the alphabet were completely unrepresented in the werk room. Not a single queen with a name starting with Q or X had ever competed on the main U.S. series until Season 16 casually fixed both in one go with the casting of Q and Xunami Muse. That left exactly one glaring holdout: the letter Z. Somehow, after nearly two decades, the main U.S. series still has not cast a queen whose drag name starts with Z. It’s one of those absurdly niche stats that sounds made up, yet here we are.
#8: Jujubee and Max Have the Exact Same Number of Challenge Wins
Jujubee is “Drag Race” royalty. She's the only queen in the history of the franchise to reach the finale four separate times — on Seasons 2, All Stars 1, All Stars 5, and “UK vs. The World” 1. That's an extraordinary level of longevity and consistency. So it's genuinely mind-bending that across all four of those seasons combined, she has won exactly two maxi challenges. Somehow, Max from Season 7, who lasted only seven episodes before being sent home in one of the strangest eliminations ever, also won two maxi challenges. Granted, if Max ever returns for an All Stars season, she most likely would win more. But for now, she is on the same level as the drag legend, Amber.
#7: Every Season 2 Queen Has Returned for Another Season
This season really is the franchise’s favorite child, because no other cast has been revisited this thoroughly. Every queen from “RuPaul’s Drag Race” Season 2 has returned for an All Stars season, excluding winner Tyra Sanchez and Sahara Davenport, who tragically passed away in 2012. Several of them were cast in the first All Stars season, Jujubee became a franchise institution and Kylie Sonique Love won All Stars 6. Even early outs like Nicole Paige Brooks and Mystique Summers Madison popped back into the “Drag Race” orbit with All Stars 10 and 11 respectively. For one early-season cast to remain that reusable, that beloved and that weirdly omnipresent is honestly kind of wild.
#6: Episodes Aren’t Always Aired in the Order They’re Filmed
Drag Race loves television magic, but this one gets deliciously weird. Like most other seasons, Seasons 9 and 10 aired their reunion episodes before the finale, which meant no winner had officially been crowned on television yet. However, fans have long suspected, and some queens have indeed confirmed, that those reunions were actually filmed after the “Lip Sync for the Crown” finale had already happened. This means Season 9 finalists Shea Couleé and Trinity the Tuck would have walked into the reunion already knowing they were out of the running. Additionally, in Season 10, since Asia O’Hara already knew the butterfly disaster had ended her chances, she would have had no hesitations confronting RuPaul about The Vixen’s situation.
#5: Every Queen From Denver, Colorado Has Made the Finale
Something is in the Rocky Mountain air, and it's producing some of the most talented queens in “Drag Race” herstory. Every single queen from Denver, Colorado who has competed on the show has made it to the finale. Nina Flowers, Yvie Oddly, Willow Pill, and Nini Coco all represented the Mile High City, and all four reached the finale of their respective seasons. That is a frankly absurd batting average. Two of them, Yvie and Willow, also won their seasons. What's even more fascinating is that all four queens share a distinctly artsy, alternative aesthetic in their drag. Denver seems to not just produce finalists, but a very specific, gloriously weird kind of drag superstar.
#4: Ginger Minj & Miss Fame Were the Same Age on Season 7
Season 7 had a very clear social divide: the established performers versus the younger, more fashion-forward queens. Ginger Minj was firmly placed in the self-proclaimed "Bitter Old Lady Brigade," the apparently older, seasoned camp contingent alongside Kennedy Davenport, Jasmine Masters and Mrs. Kasha Davis. Meanwhile, Miss Fame was grouped with Violet Chachki and Pearl as one of the season's young, confident, and allegedly arrogant competitors. However, in actuality, both Ginger and Miss Fame were 29 years old when they filmed the season. It says a lot about how perception, drag style and personality can shape a narrative far more powerfully than something as straightforward as the year one is born.
#3: Only One Queen Has Won “Drag Race” Without Ever Lip Syncing
Several queens, including names like Bianca Del Rio, Aquaria, and Sasha Velour, have won “Drag Race” without ever lip syncing for their lives. But every single one of those queens still had to either lip sync in the penultimate episode to secure their spot in the finale or lip sync in the finale to win the crown. There is, however, one queen in the entire “Drag Race” universe who never lip synced at any point. That queen is Admira Thunderp*ssy, winner of “Drag Race Sverige” Season 1. Admira sailed through the entire competition, winning three out of the seven maxi challenges in the season. By the finale, it was basically a foregone conclusion that the crown was hers.
#2: Snatch Game Has a Weirdly Lucky Winning Seat
There’s a bizarrely specific pattern in Snatch Game history: the queen sitting in the first seat at the top of the panel has often gone on to win the season. That happened with Sharon Needles in Season 4, Jinkx Monsoon in Season 5, Bianca Del Rio in Season 6, Symone in Season 13, and Trixie Mattel in All Stars 3. Curiously, of that group, only Jinkx actually won the Snatch Game challenge itself. So that position has nothing to do with performance in the challenge, but the season overall. To drag queens hoping to get cast on future seasons, you might want to wiggle your way into that seat… if you make it to the Snatch Game, that is.
#1: No Queen Who Has Won the Rusical Has Won the Season
For one of “Drag Race’s” most prestigious challenges, the Rusical has a shockingly cursed track record on the main U.S. series. Since becoming a recurring staple in Season 6, no queen who won the Rusical has gone on to win the season. Not one. That includes powerhouse performers like Courtney Act, Shea Couleé, Rosé, Gigi Goode and Anetra, all of whom won their season’s Rusical challenge and still stopped just short of the crown. Several ended up as runners-up, which somehow makes this stat even meaner. The Rusical is a true test of an all-around performer, as it requires singing, acting, dancing and sheer theatrical commitment. But unfortunately, its winning badge always seems to come at a costly price.
