#10: Eating Without Colin’s Permission
Celebrating her birthday with a few laughs, Sarah Sherman decided to dish out a healthy roast of Colin Jost. She started an extended joke about her weight with a setup about pigs. Accusing Jost of controlling her eating habits, Sherman has fun turning the “Update” host into an evil office manager. The segment continues as she digs deeper into the mock version of her co-star. Not one to miss an opportunity, the wacky guest finishes out the appearance with a callback. She brings out a cake and a card with a special message. It’s an expert way to wrap up this gift, full of playful swipes at Jost’s villainous alter-ego.
#9: Not a Virgin
Wearing a huge raccoon costume, the cast member attacks Colin Jost as a drunken animal. This includes an out-of-nowhere reference to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As Jost tries to point out Bradley Cooper’s Rocket Raccoon, Sarah Sherman’s character offers up a vicious put-down. It’s just the right kind of a silly comeback you’d expect from a drunkard. Sherman’s full-bodied performance never disappoints, with her goofy role inspiring her to unleash some feral jokes. The roast only intensifies after the “Guardians of the Galaxy” shoutout. Jost’s deadpan reaction sells the bit even more, with this goofy segment featuring great physical comedy.
#8: Colin’s Agent
Becoming a scummy version of Colin Jost’s agent, Sarah Sherman embraces a new hairstyle and some slick shades. The character lets the comedian go after the “Update” presenter with a few fictional movie roles. With projects like a biopic about Jared Fogle, the jokes keep coming as the potential films get more offensive. There’s even a new take on “Pocahontas” from the perspective of a more vengeful John Smith. Each new opportunity paints Jost as a controversial figure, giving him a chance to possibly get cancelled. Sherman’s role is funnier with her exaggerated inflections and her co-star’s self-aware reactions.
#7: Nosferatu’s Assistant Joke
The hair and makeup department spare no expense to make Sarah Sherman’s dreams come true. When she went out as Nosferatu, she found a new way to go after Colin Jost. She used the costume and prosthetic work to further emphasize her jokes. Using a cutaway gag, Sherman really leaned into her character. She also offered up a comeback after Jost pointed out the creepy fingers. The assistant joke hit even harder with the dramatic filter and scary music cue. Throughout this “Update” role, the actress relished in getting to make her anti-Jost material shine in horrifying fashion.
#6: RFK Jr.’s Appearance
In one of the more bizarre political stories in recent years, “SNL” tackled the controversy surrounding Robert Kennedy Jr.’s brain worm. Sarah Sherman took the desk to give voice to the lifeform. Along with a glorious costume, the comedian pointed out a few observations about the politician’s looks. Sherman’s character compared the man to spoiled chicken. If that wasn’t enough, the worm also snuck in a joke about Colin Jost. The redness of Kennedy’s skin reminded the creature of Jost’s reaction to university protests. Mixing in gross-out highlights with surprise laughs, the cast member once again knocks it out of the park.
#5: Talking Senator John Fetterman
Sarah Sherman doesn’t always just roast Colin Jost when she’s at the desk. For this “Weekend Update” feature, the comedian completely takes over with her own twisted program called “Sarah News.” She also takes aim at other targets including American politicians from Pennsylvania. This particular jab focuses on the stature of Senator John Fetterman. Describing him in “Sesame Street” terms, the joke contains a back-handed compliment and some less-than-kind words. What follows is Sherman’s fantasy about having Fetterman in her bedroom complete with a nod to his wardrobe. It’s yet another way that she stands out by subverting expectations.
#4: Sarah’s Weather Update
Going outside 30 Rock, Sarah Sherman gives a report on both the weather and Colin Jost. Her appearance focuses on her fake lore about the “Update” host and his views on women. With a thermometer in hand, Sherman fires off an edgy joke about the temperature outside. Jost plays along and laughs despite the comedic insinuations. The field reporter then reveals her dress, prompting more funny bits about her co-star’s clothing preferences. There’s also some made-up quotes that trip up the target back in the studio. Perhaps the craziest part of this roast comes with some props. With Jost wearing a bib and holding silverware, he looks more than happy to play along.
#3: Sarah Roasts Colin Again
While she’s supposed to be talking about the winter, the comedian uses this as another jumping off point for a Colin Jost roast. Sarah Sherman once again twists around the “Weekend Update” host’s words for her own gain. In this addition, she tackles opinions about hygiene and hair choice among other laugh-out-loud moments. Sherman also takes aim at Jost for being elitist about homeownership and wealth-hoarding. It’s a wild trip through this surreal segment, with the guest correspondent offering up some comical accusations. Even Michael Che joins the action as his co-star becomes threatened by the verbal pummeling.
#2: Sarah’s Debut Colin Roast
During her early days on “SNL,” the new cast member had to separate herself from the pack. She chose to make Colin Jost the target of an ongoing roast campaign. For this “Weekend Update” feature, she unleashed a tirade of digs at her co-star. This includes calling Jost a pervert in an extended roast about him. Presenting jokes as a news story, Sherman also calls her scene partner a mansplainer and a “sicko.” This went over so well that it prompted many future appearances. In the wake of this breakout segment, the young entertainer made a name for herself as an unexpected and effective insult comic.
#1: Roasting Colin’s Office
During this “Weekend Update,” Sarah Sherman leaves the desk for an unlikely studio tour. She then steps into Colin Jost’s office for a closer look. There’s some notes on the wall that prompt some criticism about his interior design and emotional state. Sherman mocks the decor that includes a photo shrine, with a mistake leading to some big laughs. Each new detail prompts some roasts about the “Update” hosts apparent obsessions. To top things off, an intern cage makes the guy look even more comical and wicked. It’s the perfect encapsulation of the relationship between these two “SNL” comedians.
