Well, that was uncomfortable. Welcome to WatchMojo and today we’ll be counting down our picks for top 10 awkward celebrity physical encounters.
For this list, we’ll be looking at cringeworthy encounters between famous people that got physical. We won’t be looking at fights or stunts because they deserve a list of their own.
In 2014, Ariana Grande was killing it on the Victoria Secret runway when Elsa Hosk’s wayward wing attacked her. Okay, it wasn’t that dramatic, but the expression on Ariana’s face is hilarious. She crouches down and looks as though she just narrowly escaped death. She later tweeted about it calling it an awesome moment with the hilarious hashtag “bang bang into my face.” The moment only lasted a few seconds but the internet did what it does best and memed it, and memed it hard, photoshopping Ariana into other awkward or dangerous moments.
You never know when the cameras are watching. While having a good time at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards, Lady Gaga squeezed passed Leo and he reacted like he had been burned. He flinched away and gave Gaga some serious side-eye. Leo is surprised this clip became a thing and insists that his reaction was purely surprise, since he didn’t know who or what was walking behind him. The two even laughed about the awkward moment at the afterparty. Even with this explanation however, this moment will always live on in infamy... and gifs.
There’s nothing like kissing your co-star square on the mouth in front of your husband to make a moment really awkward. Nicole and Alexander worked together on “Big Little Lies” and clearly developed an intimate connection. When Alexander won an Emmy for the series, he and Nicole had a kiss on stage directly in front of her hubby Keith Urban that included some face caressing. Urban didn’t react; he just kept on smiling and clapping, but other people certainly did. Nicole has defended the kiss and says it was nothing more than congratulatory.
The members of One Direction were being interviewed on the Red Carpet at the 43rd annual AMAs when Gigi Hadid was pulled in. You can see her entire demeanor change when she goes from giving Harry a formal handshake to smiling and giving the other members warm hugs. To make it more awkward, Harry seemingly rolls his eyes after she walks by. Gigi is good friends with Taylor Swift, Harry’s ex, and this could be the reason for the cold shoulder. You know what they say: mess with Gigi’s friends, get the shade. Then again, maybe everyone was just thrown off by the awkward interview.

As Aretha walked in, she gave Patti the ice cold shoulder, seemingly avoiding Patti’s touch and not even glancing in her direction. Patti and Aretha have both vehemently denied any feud rumors and Patti has said that it wasn’t even her but some other woman in a green coat who got ignored.
Ah, the cold hard sting of rejection: as painful to experience as it is to watch. Kelly Clarkson was apparently a fan of Avril Lavigne and was super pumped to be presenting her VMA award in 2002. That excitement quickly faded when Kelly went to give Avril a hug and Avril avoided it like it was the hug of death. She was seen elbowing herself away from Kelly. We guess she really wanted that award. It was Avril’s first major award, so we’ll chalk it up to nerves, but Kelly hasn’t been much of a fan since - and she didn’t buy the apology she got years later.
While guest-hosting on Regis and Kelly in 2006, Clay felt that Kelly was talking over him so he did what any mature adult would do and calmly waited for a chance to speak… Not! Instead Clay took his hand and put it over Kelly’s mouth, which is not okay on so many levels. Not surprisingly Kelly did not appreciate it - at all - and neither did a lot of the viewers. It actually sparked national debates about who was in the wrong: some said Kelly was overreacting and others said that Clay was way out of line. One thing we can all agree on is that it was super awkward.
“La La Land” has won over 200 awards and now, we’d like to give it the award for the cringiest moment at the 2017 Golden Globes. When the movie’s director Damien Chazelle won the Golden Globe award for best screenplay, Emma got a little too caught up in the moment. She tries to hug Damien but instead it turns into the weirdest hover-hug-kiss-thing you will ever see. You can even see Emma mouth “that was weird” immediately after it happens. At least she finished the night on a high note with a Golden Globe win for best actress.

In 2017, she asked three times for a hug, each time with mounting desperation, and Jerry gave a blunt no each time. It’s extremely painful to watch and it happened at a charity event no less! Jerry says he didn’t want to hug her because he didn’t know who she was and Kesha admits that she came on a little too strong.
