20 Weirdest Unlockables in Resident Evil Games

Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we’re showcasing the strangest unlockable costumes, weapons, and more across the “Resident Evil” series.

Special 2 Costumes

“Resident Evil 4” (2005)

“Resident Evil” has a long history of silly unlockable costumes. Although the ones in “RE 4” are far from the weirdest we’ll talk about, they nonetheless still clash with the world and story. The second set of unlockable costumes are earned after completing Ada’s campaign, ‘Separate Ways.’ Leon gets to dress like a 1920s gangster, with the look really coming together when you play with the Chicago Typewriter. Meanwhile, Ashley dons a full suit of medieval armor, going in the complete opposite direction of her first, more revealing unlockable costume.

Turbo GT & Hot Fuzz

“Resident Evil Requiem” (2026)

In the extra mode, ‘Leon Must Die Forever,’ you unlock a new accessory after beating different Ranks for the first time. Most of them are pretty goofy, like these two automobile-themed pieces of headwear. Beating the mode on Rank 2 gets you the Turbo GT, a car-shaped hat that lets you start with a pump-action shotgun, a hatchet, and the Strategist ability. Meanwhile, beating it on Rank 3 gets you the Hot Fuzz headband. This comes with flashing police lights, and starts you with a sniper rifle, a hatchet, and the Big-game Hunter ability.

Rotten Eggs

“Resident Evil 5” (2009)

In “RE 5,” Rotten Eggs can take away half of your health if you try to eat one. Yet, they’ll only make rare appearances on a standard playthrough, if at all. Which has prompted many players to find the best methods of farming for them, and for very good reason. If you chuck one of these at an enemy, it deals 1,000 damage. That can take out most weaker enemies immediately. Even better, it can also pierce through armor. They’re a fantastic resource to have, but they’re still one of the weirder throwable weapons we’ve come across.

Walking Shoes

“Resident Evil 7” (2017)

Sometimes, in a world full of horror, in a series with a history of crazy unlockables that clash with said horror, something completely ordinary can actually be weird to stumble across. Throughout “Resident Evil 7,” you can find and destroy bobble heads of a football mascot named Mr. Everywhere. Destroy all 20, and you get a nice, lovely pair of walking shoes. They increase your walking speed, as well as movement while crouched, but have no effect on your run speed. Still, while they are particularly useful in this claustrophobic entry, we can’t say we ever expected Walking Shoes to be a reward in a “Resident Evil” game.

Animal Accessories

“Resident Evil 4” (2023)

There are a ton of unlockable accessories and outfits in the “Resident Evil 4” remake. But when it comes to the weirdest or silliest of the bunch, we have to single out the animal-themed items. They can be unlocked after beating the main story, each on a different Difficulty setting, but while still earning an S+ ranking. They all come with different perks. But to be honest, seeing Leon run around with a wolf tail, deer antlers, or (my personal favorite) a chicken hat is reward enough. The hardest of the bunch to unlock are the Cat Ears, but we’ll actually touch on the weirdness of those later.

Wolf Mode

“Resident Evil Requiem” (2026)

After giving Leon a wolf tail in the “RE 4” remake, Capcom took it another step in “Requiem.” In ‘Leon Must Die Forever,’ Wolf Mode is actually easier to unlock than the Turbo GT or Hot Fuzz accessories, since you only have to clear Rank 1. It starts you with a submachine gun, a hatchet, the Surveyor ability, a fluffy pair of ears, and a nice, bushy tail. Okay, maybe they aren’t as adorable as cat ears…But we can’t deny, they actually suit Leon pretty well.

Even More Silly Costumes

“Resident Evil 5” (2009)

The fifth mainline game one-upped its predecessor, if only in terms of whacky unlockable costumes. Not all of them are strange, but the handful that are definitely deserve to be mentioned. For Chris, his zebra-print Safari outfit, unlocked after beating the game, is pretty goofy; so too is the somewhat dominatrix-inspired Warrior costume, which came with the game’s Gold Edition. For Sheva, the bright gold Clubbin’ outfit is by far the weirdest thing to wear while slaying monsters. But, again in the Gold Edition, she also got to fight wearing full Business attire.

Stick Figures

“Resident Evil Outbreak” (2004) & “Resident Evil Outbreak: File #2” (2005)

This spin-off and its sequel featured some of the weirdest unlockable characters in the entire series, in that they’re completely nondescript. In the first game, you could unlock stick figure characters named Misters Gold, Black, Blue, Green, and Red, by first finding all special items, and then purchasing them with points. In the follow-up, “File #2,” Capcom added Mrs. White, Water, and Peach, who were unlocked the same way. Needless to say, it’s pretty strange seeing stick figures in a setting like this.

Dirty Coin

“Resident Evil 7” (2017)

Like the walking shoes, it’s odd for such a seemingly ordinary item to be unlockable in a “Resident Evil” game. And while that does partially earn the Dirty Coin a spot on the list, the method of unlocking it is also obscure enough to warrant a mention. You must first start by playing the game’s ‘Beginning Hour’ demo, and solving an optional, complex, multi-step puzzle, which will earn you the Dirty Coin to be transferred over to the main game. It’s basically an extra antique coin, which can unlock certain things as you progress through the story. But to have it be obtainable only through a convoluted puzzle, in a game’s demo, is certainly unusual.

Chris the Sailor

“Resident Evil: Revelations” (2011)

We’ve talked about several weird costumes in the series. And the “Revelations” games definitely have their fair share. While in Raid Mode, by dealing 100,000 damage in a single attack, you’ll unlock the Sailor outfit for Chris Redfield. And it doesn’t exactly come in his size. Chris is squeezed into a tiny pair of white shorts and a top that shows off both his pecks and his midriff. Although undeniably silly, there are a lot of little touches that make this outfit great, like the smoking pipe and the anchor tattoo on his bicep that were seemingly inspired by Popeye.

One Dangerous Zombie

“Resident Evil” (2002)

Honestly, this one isn’t as strange as the rest of the list, but it certainly caused us to raise an eyebrow. To access this special mode, you will have to complete both Chris and Jill’s campaigns under the Normal or Hard difficulty. Doing this will allow you to begin a special version of the campaign where Spencer Mansion hosts a new enemy type - the “Bomb Zombie”! A handful of rooms will house this grenade-equipped monstrosity, and there’s nothing you can do to stop him. One shot on him will kill everyone in the room, including you. To truly rid yourself of the Bomb Zombie, you’ll have to get past the fight against Plant 42. So, good luck!

VS. Roach Mode

“Resident Evil: Survivor 2 - Code: Veronica” (2002)

“Resident Evil” has thrown many nightmarish creatures at us from your typical zombie to bio mutants to psychopaths and so on. But if you’re squeamish about roaches, you probably don’t want to complete “Code: Veronica”. Spanning five missions long, players can choose to play as either Claire Redfield or Steve Burnside and fight hordes of cockroaches. Yes, they look and sound just as disgusting as their real-world counterparts, and it almost convinced us to just burn our consoles to oblivion. Though, you have to admit it's hilarious seeing someone use a gun to off a bunch of tiny roaches.

P.R.L.-412

“Resident Evil 4” (2005)

The “Resident Evil” series has always been a bit more grounded in reality when it comes to weapons. You have your pistols, shotguns, and the occasional explosives and assault rifle. But as we’ll see later on, Capcom likes to throw in oddballs like the PRL-412. This is an energy-based gun that looks as if it was ripped straight out of “Ratchet & Clank” or “Mass Effect”, and it can blow anything away with one or two shots. As expected, unlocking it won’t be easy as you’ll have to finish RE4 under the Professional difficulty. So, you best have a strategy in mind.

Hunk (Lady)

“Resident Evil: Revelations” (2011)

Look, we got nothing against the female Hunk, but the way she’s designed is a bit questionable. Just look at her - she looks completely identical to the regular Hunk except she’s got her fine lady legs showing! They may as well have given her fishnet stockings and high heels for crying out loud! But hey, she’s got it, so...who are we to judge? Regardless how you feel about this strange gender-swap of Hunk, you can unlock her through two different methods. PS4, Xbox One, and Switch players will have to get a hundred and fifty bonuses in Raid Mode. Those who, for some reason, are still playing the original version will have to fork over three bucks. Woh woh.

Lottie

“Resident Evil: Revelations 2” (2015)

Speaking of odd characters and costumes, the sequel to “Revelations” had a really bizarre character to unlock. In Raid Mode, the wireframed character “Anonymous” (or “Cipher”) can don a life-sized costume of Lottie. Yes, you can play as the same demented teddy bear that Natalia owns. All you have to do is get Anonymous/Cipher to level 50, but to unlock him, you’ll need to accrue ninety completion medallions, which are obtained by getting Perfect Clears on each Raid Mode map. So, tell us - how badly do you want to play as a crimson teddy?

The Tofu Survivor

“Resident Evil 2” (1998)

This was the weird unlockable that started “Resident Evil” tradition of goofy side campaigns and weapons. The Tofu Survivor is exactly what one would expect from a mode with such a name - you play through a whole campaign as a sentient block of tofu! Don’t let its absurd presence fool you as this is arguably the hardest mode in the entire RE2 experience! All you have to work with is a knife and some herbs. Luckily, the tofu can take quite a bit of damage and keep running even when heavily wounded. Surprisingly, The Tofu Survivor would be expanded upon with more characters and play styles being offered, and honestly, it’s our favorite unlockable in the “Resident Evil” series.

LZ Answerer

“Resident Evil: Village” (2021)

Ethan Winters is many things - a husband, a father, a man. But what you may not know about him is that he is...the last Jedi. Your eyes do not deceive you, dear viewer! What you’re seeing on screen is the token goofy weapon for “Village” - the LZ Answerer! Now, you too can pretend you’re Darth Maul and wield a dual-bladed lightsaber to slice up zombies, lycans, and giant vampire ladies. If you desire to wield this weapon and fulfill your destiny as Jedi or Sith, you’ll have to prove your worth and achieve S rank on every Mercenaries stage! ...Or just pay a few bucks to unlock everything.

Cat Ears

“Resident Evil 2” (2019)

We aren’t even done with the list, and yet we’re asking ourselves “What is life?” Yes, you can put cat ears on your character in the “Resident Evil 2” remake, specifically the Ghost Survivor mode. All you need to do to acquire this item is complete the No Way Out scenario without firing more than sixty shots from your handgun. In other words, know when to conserve your ammo. Just to make this ridiculous headpiece worth your time, the Cat Ears grant you infinite ammo for your entire run. So, hey, looking a tad silly DOES pay off!

HOT DOGGER

“Resident Evil 3” (2020)

The third “Resident Evil” game is already kind of outrageous. Come on, a giant bioweapon that seems to magically know where Jill is at all times? But if you need even more surrealness in the remake of “Resident Evil 3”, there is a melee weapon that you’ll have a field day with. Save up 7,200P and you’ll be able to unlock the HOT DOGGER! Basically, it’s just a hot dog on a fork that you can whack zombies around with. However, this melee weapon also sets them on fire! There are already a bunch of explosions and fire happening anyways - why not take Jill for a cookout?

Bubble Gun

“Resident Evil: Revelations 2” (2015)

The Bubble Gun is by far the weirdest and funniest unlockable from across the “Resident Evil” franchise. With this, Natalia can trap enemies (including bosses) inside a giant bubble, putting them in a stasis and giving Barry ample time to unload his ammo. Unfortunately, you can’t spam this as only one enemy can be trapped inside a bubble at a time. So much for feeling like a magical girl or SpongeBob… Beware - should you use this in a playthrough, the highest grade you can possibly earn is a C rank. So, save it for less serious playthroughs.
