VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton
Forget Marvel and DC - 2024 belongs to these unique flicks! Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most must-see 2024 movie releases that are not sequels or prequels connected to an existing film franchise. Our countdown of the most anticipated movies of 2024 that are not sequels includes “IF”, “The Fall Guy”, “Civil War”, and more!

#10: “Argylle” (2024)

Release Date: February 2, 2024 [US]
Looking for a little excitement at cinemas in 2024? Matthew Vaughn’s “Argylle” should do the trick. In the film, author Elly Conway goes on the run after she learns that her spy novels actually predict real life events. This puts Elly in danger from those trying to exploit her, uh, talents. Oh, and she also must keep her cat out of harm’s way. The silly action adventure will showcase plenty of star power, including Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, and Henry Cavill – just to name a few. And with it being helmed by the director of “Kickass” and “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” we just know we’re in for a wild ride.

#9: “IF” (2024)

Release Date: May 17, 2024 [US]
John Krasinski’s “IF” has “heartwarming” written all over it. The movie focuses on a young girl named Bea who possesses an extraordinary power – the ability to see forgotten imaginary friends! Cue the whimsical adventure to save them all before they are lost forever. Krasinski not only directs the film, but co-stars along with some major talent. The A-list cast includes the likes of Ryan Reynolds and Steve Carrell as the voice of Blue. And if the trailer is any indication, the film will bring about all manner of childlike wonder and nostalgia. We won’t judge if you sneak a “blankie” into your cinema screening.

#8: “Imaginary”

Release Date: March 8, 2024 [US]
Do moviegoers love a movie about a possessed doll or what? From Chucky to Annabelle to last year’s breakout hit M3GAN, the “evil-intentioned childhood toy genre” just keeps getting better. Well, it turns out the folks at Blumhouse have another killer doll-adjacent offering for us in 2024 – “Imaginary.” This one is about a killer teddy bear. Yep, you heard us right. Its name is Chauncey and it was once the beloved imaginary friend of Jessica. But now that Jessica has grown into an adult and no longer needs Chauncey, the cuddly teddy bear has grown angry – putting Jessica’s young daughter in its crosshairs. Sounds silly? Absolutely, and we’re so here for all the campy terror!

Release Date: May 10, 2024 [US]
From “Rocketman” to “Elvis,” Hollywood has been on a roll as it relates to musical biopics. Next to get the big screen biopic treatment is the late singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse. From her beginnings as a North London jazz musician to her rise to fame in the mid-2000s, the film will explore the tumultuous life and career of the talented artist. “Industry” star Marisa Abela plays the Grammy winning singer in the film with “Fifty Shades of Grey” director, Sam Taylor Johnson, serving as director. Importantly, the movie received the blessing of Winehouse’s estate and will feature Amy’s hit songs on the soundtrack, including “Rehab” and “Back to Black.”

Release Date: May 10, 2024 [US]
When it comes to movies, Ryan Gosling has certainly proven that he’s “kenough.” And the Canadian star isn’t slowing down with his next film – literally. That’s because Gosling plays Colt - a stuntman who is thrust into a world of real danger. Colt must go undercover to locate the missing lead actor of his current film project – which, of course, is being directed by his ex-girlfriend. The movie looks to be chock full of humor and genuine thrills. Director David Leitch, of “Deadpool 2” fame, has promised all sorts of amazing stunts. This includes a supposed 150-foot fall and a scene where Gosling “surfs through the streets of Sydney, Australia, towed behind a moving vehicle.” “Kenough” indeed!

#5: “Horizon: An American Saga - Chapters 1 & 2” (2024)

Release Dates: June 28 & August 16, 2024 [US]
The Summer of 2024 could very well belong to Kevin Costner. That’s because the actor/director will unleash parts one and two of his sprawling story centered on post-Civil War expansion in the United States. The Western epic is Costner’s passion project, one that he has devoted thirty years of his life to making. The celebrated actor wrote, directed and stars in the films, which takes place over the course of 15-years. No wonder it was broken up into two parts! The movies will be released just two months apart and will feature the likes of Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Jena Malone, and Luke Wilson. Giddy up!

#4: “The Bikeriders” (2023)

Release Date: June 21 2024 [US]
Featuring Austin Butler, Tom Hardy and Norman Reedus, “The Bikeriders” follows a midwestern motorcycle club called the Vandals. Set in the 1960s, the film will show the club’s evolution over the course of a decade – ultimately becoming a dangerous gang. Interestingly, the anticipated film was supposed to land in cinemas in 2023 with hopes of garnering Oscar contention. Its distributor, Disney, opted to take the film off its release calendar due to promotional problems stemming from the actor’s strike. Luckily, Focus Features came to the rescue and promptly set it for a Summer 2024 release! Our motors are already revving!

#3: “Civil War” (2024)

Could the Civil War Movie Actually Happen?

Release Date: April 26, 2024 [US]
Filmmaker Alex Garland has yet to disappoint. The “Ex-Machina” director is back with another chilling and twisted offering, this time in the form of A24’s dystopian actioner, “Civil War.” The film offers a frightening vision of what America's future could look like should another Civil War breakout. The movie’s logline describes it as "a race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor’s edge.” The trailer explains that 19 states have seceded with mentions of the "Western Forces" of California and Texas, as well as the "Florida Alliance." Oh, and did we mention Nick Offerman is playing the president? Sold.

#2: “Mickey 17” (2024)

Release Date: TBD 2024
What do we know about “Mickey 17”? Admittedly, not much. But what has us extremely excited about the film is the man behind it: Bong Joon-ho. This will mark Bong’s first feature since his Academy Award-winning film “Parasite.” That film also became the highest-grossing Korean film ever! As for “Mickey 17,” it will star “The Batman” himself, Robert Pattinson. Pattinson’s role is described as a “disposable employee on an expedition sent to colonize an ice planet who refuses to let his replacement clone take his place.” Warner Bros. previously had the film scheduled for March of 2024 but has since updated the release date to be determined. We just hope they don’t make us wait toooo long!

#1: “Nosferatu”

Release Date: December 25, 2024 [US]
It’s not just the most anticipated film of 2024, but perhaps of the last decade! The long-awaited gothic horror remake will finally make its way to cinemas in December of 2024. The film, which has been in development for nearly 10 years, will have plenty to live up to. But we have all the faith in the world thanks to the people behind it, namely its director, Robert Eggers. Thanks to “The Lighthouse” and “The Witch,” we just know Eggers is up for the task. Plus, we’ve got Pennywise actor, Bill Skarsgård, as Count Orlok. There’s no two ways about it, “Nosferatu” will make for the perfect Christmas gift in 2024!
