Welcome to MojoPlays, and today, we’re counting down our picks for the 10 Biggest Upcoming Games of Spring 2023. For this list, we’re going over the video game titles set to be released between March and May that everyone is hyped for. Did we miss an obvious heavy hitter or indie darling? Let us know in the comments.

“Redfall”

May 2023 Take the guys who made Dishonoured, sprinkle in vampires, and throw in the Left 4 Dead formula, and you’ve got a cocktail that we’re cautiously optimistic about. Sure, Arkane’s artstyle doesn’t exactly inspire fear, but they’ve never been one to lack ambition, and with Back 4 Blood failing to really grasp what made the zombie-horde-FPS so enthralling, maybe this dark horse can actually pull it off? While there’s the option for single player, Redfall is going to live or die via how fun and addictive it’s four player co-op campaign is. Cross your fangs.

“Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse”

March 2023 Ask any fan of the genre, and they’ll tell you that Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly is one of the quintessential experiences in horror games, as unsettling as it is artful. In fact, the whole Fatal Frame series has a special place in gaming history, it’s just that those of us outside Japan haven’t been able to enjoy the series to its fullest, what with the fourth title – Mask of the Lunar Eclipse – never seeing a western release. Until now. With a remake on the way, we’re hoping to see more of that classic camera obscura action. Hopefully the transition from the Wii’s gameplay mechanics to modern is a smooth one, so we can relish in the spookiness without any jank.

March 2023 Apparently this is the year of remasters, and few have had more of an uphill journey than this one! Bringing the 1994 classic into the modern age seems like a no-brainer, and while Nightdive studios has had more than a few obstacles in its way, they’ve finally set a date. And from what we’ve seen so far, the gameplay looks to be fast and fluid whilst paying homage to the original. We won’t know for certain if this will bring about the second coming of SHODAN, but at the very least it’s going to give newcomers a taste of what made the original so special.

“Crime Boss: Rockay City”

March 2023 Is there every chance this game could just be GTA Lite? Yes, but that doesn’t change the fact it somehow managed to stuff the likes of Michael Rooker, Kim Basinger, Danny Glover, Danny Trejo, Vanilla Ice and Chuck Norris into one game. That fact alone has us excited to see what kind of craziness Rockay City has in store for us, since it’s clearly not taking itself seriously. Mix together some manner of story mode with PVE co-op multiplayer centered around heists, and at the very least this game is guaranteed to get a few laughs out of us. We’re always down for some 90s cheese, and it doesn’t get cheesier than Michael Madsen with that haircut.

“Wo Long: Fallen Destiny”

March 2023 Fans of Nioh, eat your hearts out, because it looks like you’ve got another uber-challenging action-RPG on your hands. And this time, it comes with a jump button. Given Team Ninja’s history with the genre, there’s no doubt this is going to be an expertly made trial by fire tailor-made for parry gods and those that thrive on the adrenaline of taking on highly difficult enemies that will relentlessly test your ability to “git gud”. Throw in cooperative multiplayer, and this dark, fantasy retelling of Chinese history looks to be another winner for those who like their gameplay with an extra layer of suffering.

“Dead Island 2”

April 2023 Holy undead tortilla chips – it actually exists. After spending so long in development hell, we doubted that a sequel to Dead Island would ever rear its head, but here we are, and we’ll be damned if we aren’t at least intrigued by what we’ve seen so far! The visuals and gore effects look on point, the atmosphere is appropriately pulpy, and it looks like there’s going to be a greater emphasis on crafting and melee-ing your way throughout a zombie-infected landscape, swapping out the tropics for a quarantined Los Angeles. By all accounts, this could end up becoming one hell of a comeback story if they stick the landing.

“Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League”

May 2023 While there’s certainly a bittersweet edge to this game knowing it contains Kevin Conroy’s final performance as Batman, we’re still hoping that Harley and the gang deliver a great DC experience. Let’s be honest, after Gotham Knights, we really need it. Given how Rocksteady, the developers of the Arkham Games, are coming back for one last swing, there really isn’t an excuse for this game to not be a barrel of fun. Let’s hope the combat is as sharp as it is varied, the story and dialogue is as funny as it’s been advertised to be, and that the multiplayer elements seamlessly blend into its crazy open world. Still no idea how we’re going to beat Superman…

“Resident Evil 4”

March 2023 The one remaster to rule them all. Not only is this title regarded by many as the best in the franchise, but as a landmark title for video games in general. Thankfully, Capcom seems to be treating it as such, remaking it from the ground up a la Resident Evil 2. The polish on this thing already looks incredible, and if the trailers are any indication, they’re going to be interjecting new scenarios to really ramp up the horror. For as ground-breaking as RE4 was, it’s certainly not without its rough spots (cough) escort missions (cough) so any streamlining or interpretations of those aspects suits us just fine!

“Star Wars Jedi: Survivor”

March 2023 Fallen Order wasn’t only one of the best Star Wars games in recent memory, but it was also the much-needed force lightning to jolt EA into realizing that single player, story driven games still had value. Now we’ve got a sequel on the way, and from what we’ve been shown so far, everything looks bigger, from the world to the combat to the stakes! Cal Kestis has already endeared himself to fans, so getting to revisit his journey along with a broader range of lightsaber stances, force powers and enemies to encounter sounds like an absolute treat.

“The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom”

May 2023 Breath of the Wild was a feat in gaming that took the world by storm, with Link’s open-world escapades so numerous and addictive it easily climbed up the ranks to become many players’ new favorite game of all time. A sequel was almost inevitable, and now it’s just around the corner. Details are still scarce, though from what we’ve seen, Link will once again be traversing in Hyrule to stop some manner of unseen danger, only now he’s not just limited to the earth, and will now be able to explore floating ruins and other aerial based areas. Who knows if it can truly measure up to Breath’s impact, but so far, the scale and scope of Tears of the Kingdom looks to be phenomenal.
