Top 5 2017 Prom Dress Trends

It’s the most important outfit you’ll wear during your teen years. Welcome to MsMojo and today we're counting down our picks for the Top 5 2017 Prom Dress Trends.
For this list, we’re looking at the most prominent trends in gowns for this prom season.

#5: Floral Dresses

When you think of prom dresses, you probably imagine solid pastel colors but in the early 21st century, prints are becoming more and more popular. Floral prints are timeless, somehow evoking both a vintage and modern look. You’ll stand out from the crowd in a bold and colorful design in whatever shades flatter you the most. In 2017, larger floral designs seem to be the most on trend. Shorter flowery dresses may look somewhat casual, so for the most formal look, opt for a floor length gown.

#4: Mermaid Dresses

Mermaid style silhouettes have been popular in the bridal industry for years, but now the trend is common at proms as well. The mermaid style is defined by a fitted bodice that flares out at the knee. The silhouette can be either subtle or dramatic, depending on what kind of look you’re going for. This curve-hugging look is inherently sultry if you want to show off your figure. A variety of colors and fabrics work well in this style, but avoid shades of white if you want to avoid looking like you’re getting married.

#3: All Black Dresses

As an event that takes place in the spring, prom is usually a time for gowns in lighter breezy shades. If you want to show off your dark side though, a black dress is eternally chic. The darker hue is universally flattering no matter what your size or skin tone, making this an easy pick for just about anyone. Choosing a dress with some beading or embellishment will add some pizzazz to an otherwise somber color. Black dresses work in just about any silhouette and the best part is that this timeless color can be worn time and time again.

#2: Sparkly Dresses

It’s your night to shine, so you may as well go all out with the bling. If you want to feel like a princess on your prom night, there’s no better way than with full-on sparkles. Whether it’s with rhinestones, beading or stitched embroidery, you’ll be sure to dazzle as you dance the night away. Depending on just how flashy you want to get, you can opt for an all-over glitter or more subtle embellishments on certain parts of the dress. Sparkles look good on both long or short dresses, so go with whatever you feel the most confident in.

#1: Two-Piece Dresses

If there’s one trend that has completely taken over in prom fashion in the early 21st century, it’s two-piece dresses. If you want to combine multiple trends, it’s totally doable. There are plenty of two-piece dresses that are also floral printed, mermaid style, sparkly or black! You don’t have to bare too much skin to try out this fad, the top and skirt can be either millimeters or inches apart. For a similar look, you can also try the cutout style and choose to reveal a different body part if your midriff isn’t your best feature.
