Top 10 Best Toy Commercials

These were the ads that had (or have!) you running to the toy store. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the Top 10 Best Toy Commercials. For this list, we’re counting down toy commercials based on how memorable, creative and iconic they are. Also, these commercials are strictly for toys and board games, so we’re excluding those for consoles or video games because that’s for a different list.

#10: Skip-It

A good ‘90s toy commercial had two things: kids having fun and a catchy song describing their toy. Though originally released in the ’80s, the Skip-It made a comeback during the next decade. To play with this children’s toy, you hook your leg through a hoop and then, using your momentum, you must swing the ball and hop over it. It was easier said than done, however! Of course, when its commercial came on, we didn’t care how difficult it was – we just wanted one for ourselves! It was a simple toy that anyone could have fun with. But the greatest thing of all was the later addition of a counter on the ball, which kept track how many times you could Skip-It.

#9: Don’t Wake Daddy

The beauty of a board game is that it can be based on anything, including a scenario in which you are trying to sneak past your parents to get a midnight snack. In “Don’t Wake Daddy,” you must try and sneak past your dad without waking him. However, if you land on the wrong-colored noise space, you must press the clock button an assigned number of times, and if he wakes up, it’s back to bed for you! This commercial had children sneaking around the game board in pajamas and it’s just too bad for them if they never got their snack.

#8: Talkboy

In this day and age, we have no need for tape recorders, but that doesn’t stop us from enjoying this commercial. In this ad for the electronic toy, a little brother is using the Talkboy to bug his sister and her boyfriend by using the device’s different capabilities. This includes being able to change his voice to sound like their parents and record mischievous messages to play tricks on the couple. The Talkboy was originally a prop first seen in “Home Alone 2,” but thanks to its popularity, it was made into a commercial product so that we could all cause our own hijinks to our hearts’ desires.

#7: Perfection

Many games require smarts, hand-eye coordination or timing. Then there are board games like “Perfection” where you require all three. As the song in its commercial says, you must “put the pieces into the slot, make the right selection” before time runs out or POP! all the pieces fall out and you must try all over again. The ad for “Perfection” perfectly captures the spirit of the game with a fast-paced and catchy song, as well as a guy who spontaneously explodes to signify the pieces popping out.

#6: Easy-Bake Oven

For years, the Easy-Bake Oven has provided kids with an easy way to make snacks and desserts to enjoy. If the thought of delicious “cakes, brownies, cookies, and candies” doesn’t get you in the mood, then the catchy song that goes along with this working toy oven will. For anyone who is an aspiring pastry chef, this is the play set for you. Impress your friends with your culinary skills and maybe open your own restaurant. Just let us lick the bowl.

#5: Hot Wheels

They’re new, they’re authentic… okay, maybe they aren’t that new, but Hot Wheels are definitely authentic – and they have been burning rubber on those orange tracks for decades. The original commercials for these miniature die-cast versions of famous cars played out like an action scene from an old movie. Of course, if you’re not into Hot Wheels, then you could always jump ship for the fast talking Micro Machines Man… if you can understand anything he’s saying, that is!

#4: Operation

So you’ve had an accident and you are on the way to the Operating Room when you find out that your doctors are actually children… yeah, we’d be scared too. Unfortunately for the patient being operated on in this battery-powered game, he’s got many health issues and he needs immediate medical attention. These range from water on the knee to a literal Charley Horse! He has so many medical problems that he needs to rely on his operators’ physical skills to cure him; y’know, it might be smart to page Dr. House as a consultant…

#3: Guess Who?

Is it me, is it you? “Guess Who?” is a guessing game where you must ask yes or no questions to figure out which character your opponent has. In this commercial kids are playing and asking the questions while the characters of the game answer yes or no. “Does this person have a beard?” If not, then you need to flip those characters on your board down. It’s definitely a fun and simple game, though to be honest, we’d be a little worried if our games started talking to us.

#2: Barbie

This is a classic commercial for a classic toy: the original Barbie doll. Back then, all the commercial did was show off the fashion doll as she stood there and posed, while a song played in the background – and that’s all that was needed. Barbie didn’t do any fancy tricks; it was just a doll for girls to play with and dress up. While this 1959 commercial isn’t particularly exciting, it has a lot of history considering it came out at a time when TV ads were still just starting out. So it’s no wonder Barbie commercials are just as strong today.

Before we beg our parents for our top pick, here are some honorable mentions.
- 13 Dead End Drive
- Creepy Crawlers
- Polly Pocket
- Super Soaker
- Crossfire
- Pogs

#1: Slinky

Did you guess what our top spot would be before we got to it? Come on, everyone knows it’s gotta be the Slinky! Starting off with a kid playing around with the helical spring, we are then greeted with a song that explains all the things this metal toy can do. On top of the song, we also hear the actual noise that a Slinky makes when you play with it, which ingrains the sound and the toy into our heads.Toy commercials don’t get better than this; effectively showing children having fun with the gadget, while the catchy tune makes sure “everyone knows it’s Slinky.”
