Top 10 Comic Book Super Villains

These guys are definitely the baddest of the bad. Welcome to and today we’ll be counting down our picks for the top 10 super villains.

For this list, each villain must have an origin in a comic book. We’re looking at characters from any comic book publisher.

#10: Apocalypse

His name is certainly an indication of what is about to befall the world shall he appear. Apocalypse is a villain that has utterly laid waste to the X-men, forcing them to team up with unlikely allies to even have a chance at taking him down. Apocalypse’s superior abilities and ruthless schemes are enough to spread fear to all those even thinking of crossing paths with him. A firm believer in survival of the fittest, he is truly the end of days.

#9: Venom

There have certainly been many incarnations of Venom over the years, but the version that comes to most fans’ minds is that of Eddie Brock. Bonding with the symbiote that was rejected by his nemesis Peter Parker, aka Spider-man, the two infused to become a beast born of rage and vengeance. With his abilities and strength surpassing that of Parker, Eddie over-powered his rival on many occasions. However, Brock has a strong moral code, leading him to resentfully teaming up with Spider-man on a couple occasions.

#8: Ra’s al Ghul

One of Batman’s greatest villains, Ra’s al Ghul is about as menacing as they come. His name literally translates to “head of the demon” so you know where this is going. Ghul strongly believes that he can bring about balance and order to the world, but unfortunately his methods require wiping out large chunks of humanity in the process. His schemes have been some of the most horrific and dastardly to date; Ghul is not one to be taken lightly.

#7: Galactus

Talk about having an appetite. This guy gains his nourishment by devouring whole planets and all those who unfortunately happen to inhabit it. Using his chosen heralds, like the Silver Surfer, Galactus is constantly on the hunt for more planets to consume, and he has been a foil for more than just the Fantastic Four. His presence often means heroes and villains setting aside their differences for the moment to focus on the bigger and hungrier picture.

#6: Dr. Doom

Victor von Doom or Dr. Doom has been the antagonist for many a hero in the Marvel Universe. The Fantastic Four, The Avengers, The X-Men and many more have had to deal with Doom on more than one occasion. As dictator of the fictional nation Latveria, Doom uses all his resources and his diabolical mind to scheme for world dominance and beyond. Though his arrogance often gets the best of him, his relentless persistence is what keeps the heroes of the world on edge for years to come.

#5: Darkseid

This guy means business. Darkseid is more than willing to annihilate anyone that stands in the way of his quest for conquering the universe and molding it into his own image. This means that many of DC’s greatest superheroes have clashed with him on many occasions. With extraordinary abilities and his deadly Omega Beam, Darkseid proves overwhelming to most all that oppose him. Only those with the power akin to that of Superman stand any chance of taking him head on.

#4: The Green Goblin

When Norman Osborn transformed into The Green Goblin, he became the most terrifying foe in Spider-man’s rogue gallery. Armed with a technologically advanced goblin glider and an array of pumpkin bombs, Osborn put Parker to the ultimate test time and time again. As if having so much firepower wasn’t enough, Osborn’s sadistic intent is even more deadly than any of the weapons in his arsenal. His evil actions even led to death of Peter’s first love, Gwen Stacy, a moment that was both terrifying and heartbreaking.

#3: Magneto

The master of magnetism. Magneto is one of the most powerful mutants alive. Unfortunately, he doesn’t often use his powers to help mankind as he believes mutants are humanities cure. This led to many disputes between his old friend Professor X and the X-men. However, Magneto has put aside his plans for global mutant dominance to aid the X-men in fighting villains that threaten them all. Many are weary of trusting him, but you can’t deny that you wouldn’t want him on your side when the chips are down.

#2: Lex Luthor

What Lex Luthor lacks in super human abilities, he more than makes up for with his superior intellect and by being a master manipulator. What makes Luther so terrifying is the lengths he is willing to go in order to achieve his goals, proof that it’s the man behind the trigger that is more threatening than the gun itself. A true mad man, he seeks to kill his enemy Superman, no matter the cost.

Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions:
- Kingpin
- General Zod
- Loki
- Dr. Octopus
- Sinestro
- Bane

#1: The Joker

When the word “villain” comes up, the first image that comes to your head is man dressed in a purple suit with clown make up on and a sinister, but joyful smile on his face. Though dressed in a silly and playful get up, in no circumstance is he to be taken lightly. The joker is insanity personified, a killer without remorse, so far gone that he’s past the point of return, but that’s certainly part of his charm. Much like how Luthor is the perfect opposite to Superman’s strength, so too is the Joker the ultimate opposite to Batman’s over-serious but ever compassionate persona. He’s the clown Prince of Crime, and the king of our list.
