Top 10 Superhero Catchphrases

We associate superheroes with these phrases just as much as their costumes. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the top 10 superhero catchphrases.

For this list, we’ve included the phrase of dialogue most commonly associated with specific superheroes, regardless of the medium; so movies, comics and TV shows are all fair game.

#10: “Back in a Flash”
The Flash

He’s just a normal nice guy living in Central City – except he also just so happens to be the Fastest Man Alive. That’s why most of us probably associate the Scarlet Speedster with his fast pace and even faster mouth. And that’s definitely true of his Justice League incarnation. But there was also a live-action TV show in the ‘90s, where The Flash may not have been as loudmouthed, but he still gave us this little gem.

#9: “In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night…”
Green Lantern

When a hero or villain spits out a monologue, it can be hit or miss. And you’d expect an entire, time-consuming oath to be a “miss.” But that’s not the case with the Green Lantern Corps. Sworn to protect the entire universe by wielding a power ring, the Green Lantern’s oath acts both as a scared vow and often a power up. It even managed to make the live-action movie a little cooler.

#8: “I’m Batman”
Batman

No name strikes fear into the hearts of criminals and ignites a fire in fanboys more than the Dark Knight’s. With the goal of carrying on his parents’ work and restoring Gotham City to its former splendor, Bruce Wayne dons the cape and cowl and takes to the streets. We do love his grim dialogue that sets the tone for things to come –But it’s the payoff line that gives us chills. If we had to choose our top 3 picks for delivery, though, we’d have to go with:

#7: “Flame On!”
The Human Torch

What could possibly be a better catchphrase for a superhero whose power is literally setting himself on fire? Actually, that’s not even his only power: he’s basically got like supreme control over fire in general. Plus, as the youngest of the Fantastic Four, he’s impulsive and impatient. Bad guys are understandably afraid to do battle with this Fantastic Four member, especially if these famous words are heard:

#6: “Bub”
Wolverine

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the adamantium-skeleton, accelerated healing, razor-clawed death machine that is Wolverine, here are the top five things you should know: 5 – He loves motorcycles, cigars and the odd drink, 4 – He’s Canadian, 3 – He could go toe to toe with Batman for how many girlfriends he’s had die on him, 2 – He can and will tear you into a million pieces without breaking a sweat with the help of his built-in claws, and 1 - If he calls you “Bub,” then you’re a dead man.

#5: “Cowabunga!”
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

When you’re one of four mutated turtle brothers that live in the sewer, practice ninjutsu and eat pizza like it going outta style, you’ve got to have an equally awesome catchphrase to use when you’re flying into battle against enemies like the Shredder. No not that, we’re talking about the surfer-slang everyone cries before leaping into danger with a grin on their face. Gotta love being a hero on the half shell.

#4: “Avengers Assemble!”
The Avengers

It’s the rally cry that all great superhero teams envy. Meant to bring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes together to fight the foes no single superhero can withstand, the catchphrase may not have made its way into the 2012 film. But it’s a staple of the comics and animated shows. Usually belted out by either Captain America or Iron Man, this call to arms lets the good guys know that things are about to go down!

#3: “It’s Clobberin’ Time!”
The Thing

Street-smart, book smart and with a killer sense of humor; the Thing is probably the most famous of the Fantastic Four – or at least the biggest. This rocky giant is also blessed with one of the most famous superhero catchphrases in general. Everyone knows to stay out of the way when Ben “The Thing” Grimm starts yelling –Because what follows is a guaranteed ass-whooping that’s sure to feel as if a mountain just punched you in the face.

#2: “HULK SMASH!”
The Incredible Hulk

If there ever was a phrase to fill you with fear, it’s this one. After the socially awkward physicist Dr. Bruce Banner ends up at the center of a gamma ray explosion, he transforms into this hulk of a monster. The Hulk is a guy whose good side you desperately want to stay on. But villains and heroes alike have suffered the consequences of the Hulk’s endless rage. Oh sure, you may get in the odd punch, but when those two little words come out, it’s all over.

Before we let loose our number one pick, here are a few heroic honorable mentions:
- “It’s Morphin’ Time!” Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
- “Up, Up and Away!” Superman
- “I Am the Law!” Judge Dredd
- “SHAZAM!” Captain Marvel
- “SPOON!” The Tick

#1: “I’m Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man!”
Spider-Man

Everyone knows this classic catchphrase. And everyone knows Peter Parker’s got the weight of world on his shoulders But our pick for his most iconic quote goes to the more snarky phrase that Spidey likes to call out before delivering some web-slinging justice. Yeah, it’s a tad corny, but we love it all the same. Go Spidey go!
