Sure, Pikachu lost his electric type moves by Zekrom, but he was fighting a Snivy that had no battling experience, has other movesets like iron tail and quick attack. This was just a lame excuse to justify Trip as Ash's new rival.

This gym battle kinda kick starts the trend of Ash gaining his Kanto gym badges through unconventional means. E.g. rescuing gyms from Team Rocket's schemes or making Sabrina laugh
