To stick to game canon, they are Italian. The Mario Bros. Super Show and its spinoffs gave them a backstory how they are from Brooklyn. There is no proof they are from there.

Being that Red is the first protagonist of the original Pok?mon games and the anime followed soon after, he is mistaken as his anime counterpart. They may look alike, but they are both different from the other. In game canon, Red is a Pok?mon League champion and a legendary trainer. Ash on the other hand, has never won a championship nor is a Pok?m
