To add on to Eilias' comment, Link is also one of the most famous video game character who has almost no spoken dialogue whatsoever, within the past 28 years. He really does deserve the top spot!

His silence is even more relevant when you consider that the play mechanics (and the entire narrative of the game) are anchored around the player's choices. To emphasize the idea of man vs. slave through the player's choices, all while keeping the protagonist silent, succeeds in granting a greater meaning to the context of "silent protagonist."

I think this should be taken off because EVERY protagonist in this series is silent. That Red was the first one is incidental, even if it was in an iconic first game in the series. I'd keep this as an honorable mention.
