Henry Fonda in The Grapes Of Wrath/ Charlie Chaplin in The Great Dictator/ Laurence Olivier in Rebecca (1940)
Some consider Stewart to be a supporting cast member to Cary Grant in the film, which has given some of the most quotable lines in film history. But it wasn't the best movie of the year, and although 1940 was certainly a competitive year, no movie stood out more than Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca.

There's no doubt that whilst Cooper is hilarious in the movie, Welles' performance stands the test of time, and, in a year where the Academy was infamous to giving into How Green Was My Valley for most of the Oscars Citizen Kane deserved, there's no wonder Welles was defeated.
