With Dragon Ball Super, the anime is often described as being "The Goku and Vegeta show," and it's likely that the non-Goku characters would have recieved better treatment if the buddy dynamic between the two Saiyans hadn't been forced in.

He could have absolutely filled Jiren's role in the Tournament of Power, while at the same time being capable of having meaningful interactions with other characters and personal development.
