On February 18, 2001, NASCAR changed forever, as a new broadcasting package was introduced. It was also tragic, as Dale Earnhardt's car was turned by Sterling Marlin into the turn 4 wall on the last lap, causing Earnhardt to suffer a severe basilar skull fracture that killed him.

Dale Earnhardt won multiple Daytona 500 qualifying races, seven championships, but never the Daytona 500. That is, until 1998.
Trevor Bayne won the Daytona 500 at 20 years and 1 day, making him the race's youngest winner ever.

Exactly six years to the day of Dale Earnhardt's 1998 Daytona 500 win, his son Dale Earnhardt, Jr. won the race, after a mostly two-way battle for the lead with Tony Stewart.
