When reaching the end of any good video game, we want to feel like we’ve accomplished something. That tangalbe moment all gamers have experienced, putting the controller down and taking time to reflect on the the story, its characters, and the experience as a whole is both satasfying and reflexive. This is why a bad ending can feel like a betrayal, especially if it’s to a great video game. If a game is awful from the start, we don’t have any expectations for its ending -- or we just stop playing before we get to that point. But if we’re captivated by what a game has to offer, a terrible conclusion will ruin the entire experience.

There are few types of games as ambitious as those set in an open world. Whether a multiplayer sandbox, massively multiplayer RPG or an elaborate single player exploration game, the amount of work involved is daunting. Companies like CD Projekt, Rockstar Games and of course, the kings of open world adventure, Bethesda, have spent a lifetime learning how to deal with all the… complexities and difficulties that go into giving the player the ‘go anywhere do anything’ freedom that comes with an open world experience. Many smaller developers simply don’t try or give up halfway through, as was the case with Deep Silver’s laughably bad 2013 game Ride to Hell: Retribution which began development as an open world game but was released as a story driven linear adventure.

All good things must come to an end, but that doesn’t mean that end won’t stay with you. As important as a game’s adventure is, its ending can make or break the overall quality of your experience. Video games put you into the shoes of the characters who are most directly involved in the action and in a way, you often feel like you’re the one taking the journey. This is why we root for the heroes. Maybe the great ending wasn’t story related at all. Maybe it was just the thrill of beating a challenging game or an exciting boss fight. Whatever the case, we always want the hero to come out on top and win the day because when that happens, we want to taste that victory.

There are many games whose origins and raison d'être are rooted in free-form open world experiences. It’s hard to imagine a Grand Theft Auto, Elder Scrolls or Fallout game set to a linear and carefully orchestrated pace; and a game like Minecraft would be flat out impossible in that type of environment. In the past few years however, the term ‘open world’ has become almost a turnOFF for gamers, rather than something that gets them excited. More and more, new games and sequels to existing franchises are going the open world route, to the point where it’s starting to feel like the default state for every new AAA title. Whether due to technological restrictions or budget restraints or too much ambition, open world games often come with concessions. When the player is free to go almost anywhere right from the start, it’s hard to deliver a cohesive narrative and engaging story. The more things you allow a player to do in the world, the more the game has to stretch itself to accommodate all of these options and features.
